THAILANDIn Thailand, SGS offers a wide range of services to support the country rice industry.
Once again, this year’s production will reach new heights – achieving 23 million metric tons (MMT) in 2018. Of this, some 11 MMT will be exported. Exports are up on 2017, bolstered by increasing demand in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Drawing on local expertise, our rice industry services include inspection, fumigation, testing and system certification, either standalone or as part of bespoke service bundles.

Estimates for this year’s rice production stand at 111 million metric tonnes (MMT), of which 9-10 MMT will be exported.

TESTING SERVICES
Continued investment means, we have again broadened the spectrum of agrochemical residues testing in rice to 600+ molecules covering MRLs for the EU, FSSAI and other country specific requirements. Testing is carried out following multi-residue and single residue methods and can quantify the molecules at 0.01 mg/kg.
This builds on our existing capabilities for the testing of rice and cereals for:
• Heavy metals • Mycotoxins • Naturally occurring toxins • Microbiological testing • Quality parameters • Nutritional fact testing • DNA-based authenticity and varietal identification of basmati rice
• GMO identification (to a limit of 0.01%)
Additionally, we can carry out tests for specific requirements such as amino acid profile, starch and amylose and choline content.
For paddy grains, our seed lab can conduct germination and vigor testing.
All testing on rice is carried out in accordance with international and national standards, as well as in-house validated and accredited methods.
Beyond the laboratory, and at every step of the supply chain, our fumigation and pest control services minimize the risk of damage to your goods and prevent the spread of pests.

MYANMARSGS is Myanmar’s longest serving inspection, verification, testing and certification company, and one of its oldest multinational companies. We work closely with clients across the country to ensure their success in the rice market.
In a country of 56 million people, rice production for the 2018/19 season is expected to reach 13 million metric tons (MMT), of which about 3.6 MMT will be exported. In recent years, rice, parboiled rice and 100% broken rice has been exported to Europe, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines, and South Africa, among others.
MARKET UPDATE
The short-term forecast, for the next six months, is for rice and broken rice exports to reach 2 MMT. The final total may be less than the same period last year after floods damaged around 400,000 acres of paddy plantations this season, which has impacted production. In the last year, which saw 3.6 MMT of
rice and broken rice exported, border trade surpassed sea trade in rice export – accounting for 56.7% of total exports.
