Dear Reader,

Thanks for taking an interest in Focusrite!

Since 1985 Focusrite remains the go-to

brand for the best in analogue signal

processing. But time moves on and we have

kept up with the changes in the recording

industry with the move to Digital Audio

Workstations (DAWs). Our product range

now not only includes our “heritage” ISA

series, which has its roots in the 1980’s with

transformer-coupled microphone preamps

and the legendary Focusrite EQ, but also

hybrid analogue / digital signal processing

found in the Liquid Channel.

Digital conversion is today as much our

expertise as is microphone preamplifi er

design. The ISA One features optional A-D

conversion that out-performs any other

product anywhere near its price bracket in

terms of dynamic range, noise and jitter.

Indeed, all our ISA A-D converter cards are

the equal of, and in some cases out-perform,

the best converter brands available, and

often at a fraction of the price.

Which brings me to our fastest-growing

business segment today: Audio Interfaces.

Our Scarlett USB 2.0 and second-generation

Saffi re Audio Interfaces are truly State-of-

the-Art delivering on one simple promise

– the best sound in their class.

The growing range includes products for

all pockets and requirement levels, from

the Scarlett 2i2 - our entry-level interface

- to the Liquid Saffi re 56, which combines

two channels of Liquid mic-pre emulation

with six Focusrite Saffi re mic pres, specially

designed for the Saffi re Range. RedNet

goes one step further, using innovative

networking technology and standard

ethernet protocols to completely redefi ne

how we see the modern recording studio.

So we are both Focusrite - the Heritage

Analogue Audio Company, and Focusrite -

The Interface Company. Old School and

New School. We aim to continue to be the

best of both. I hope you will join our family

of satisfi ed customers.

RedNet is Focusrite’s powerful new scalable professional

digital audio networking system, delivering everything you

need in a studio environment. Using standard, robust and

reliable Internet Protocol (IP) networking technology to

carry high resolution audio over a standard Ethernet

network, RedNet makes studio design, installation and

confi guration easier than ever before.

At its heart is the robust, tried-and-tested Dante™ digital

audio networking technology, from Audinate. Dante uses

standard Gigabit Ethernet networking components to carry

up to 128 inputs and 128 outputs over standard Ethernet.

Dante has become a standard in live sound, frequently

relied on for major events.

Focusrite brings Dante into the heart of the studio with

versatile, superb-quality audio interfaces that will

revolutionise everything in your studio – from wiring to

workfl ow. And unlike other digital audio systems, RedNet

is non-proprietary, working with any ASIO or Core Audio

compliant DAW software including Pro Tools, Logic

and Nuendo.

4 *Latency under 3ms requires the RedNet PCIe card with the DAW buffer set appropriately.

THE RANGE

RedNet initially comprises fi ve products. Four high-quality,

versatile interfaces deliver traditional Focusrite ethos and

performance, where sound is everything, with exceptional

value for money. Accompanying these is the optional RedNet

PCIe card, delivering under 3mS latency at any sample rate*.

Every analogue interface has dynamic range in excess of 118dB,

24-bit resolution and sample rates up to 192kHz. Each embodies

the most advanced conversion designs and components on

the market. Each includes JetPLL™ for ultra-low-jitter clock

recovery. The result: quality that is second to none.

RedNet 1 and 2: 8 and 16 channel AD-DA Interfaces

RedNet 1 and 2 feature Focusrite’s precision 24-bit AD and DA conversion for superb audio

performance, with over 118dB dynamic range at sample rates up to 192kHz. RedNet 1 provides

eight channels; RedNet 2, 16 channels.

RedNet 3: Digital I/O

RedNet 3 interfaces existing digital audio systems and components up to a maximum of 32 inputs

and outputs. Sixteen ADAT optical ports provide a full 32 digital channels in and out at up to

96kHz (S-MUX2). Support for AES, S/PDIF and ADAT digital audio formats and word clock.

RedNet 4: Eight Microphone preamps/line inputs

RedNet 4 provides eight specially-designed Focusrite mic preamps and line inputs with two

selectable DIs – plus Focusrite world-class precision AD conversion and specially-crafted mic

preamps. Front panel or remote control.

RedNet Low-Latency PCIe Card

Where low latency is critical, such as tracking, the RedNet PCIe card for Mac or Windows delivers sub-3mS

latency, 128 inputs and outputs, and sample rates from 44.1 to 192kHz. A standard Ethernet RJ45 connects to

your network. Alternatively, use the Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) and your machine’s built-in Ethernet port,

for latency comparable to Focusrite FireWire interfaces.

Page 7: Focus Rite

What is VRM?Convenient though headphones may be, they’re simply not the same as listening on a pair

of monitor loudspeakers. And yet… listening on one pair of monitor speakers isn’t enough

either. To tell how your music will sound in the real world, you need to listen in different

environments, with different speakers. Until now, you had to burn a CD or transfer a fi le and

play it back on real systems in actual environments to A/B your mixes in different places. But

now, there’s a better way.

VIRTUAL REFERENCE MONITORING

The answer is Focusrite’s unique and well-established VRM™ (Virtual Reference Monitoring)

technology – a room and loudspeaker simulation system for headphone monitoring. While

listening on conventional monitoring headphones, VRM lets you select your listening

environment – pro studio, bedroom studio or living room – and choose from an extensive list of

industry-standard studio monitors and loudspeaker systems to listen on.

VRM’s extensive selection of built-in loudspeakers and listening environments is based

on precise mathematical models derived from convolutions of actual impulse responses

measured using the original loudspeakers. The use of mathematical modelling provides

maximum fl exibility of combinations of loudspeakers and listening environments for the

highest possible accuracy of the virtual monitoring simulation.

VRM allows you to choose between 10 pairs of industry-standard nearfi eld monitors in an

acoustically-treated control room. In addition, two extra rooms are provided – a large living

room and a smaller bedroom – where you can choose between speakers such as quality hi-fi ,

computer, cheap stereo and TV speakers.

Saffi re / Scarlett MixControlMixControl software is a powerful ultra-low-latency monitoring package that enables you

to create several independent mixes and send each of them out to any interface output. Each

mix can be built up using a combination of input signals and DAW outputs. Intuitive one-click

confi gurations help you track, monitor and mix as quickly as possible.

The software window comprises of four main sections: a mixer, a router, a monitor section

and a device status section:

• The mixer section allows you to create independent mixes - each of which can be routed out

to physical outputs for monitoring, headphone cues or external processing.

• The router section is used to send any combination of physical inputs, DAW outputs or user-

created mixes of these streams to any outputs.

• The monitor section provides control of Volume, Dim, Mute and independent left or right cut.

• The device set-up section shows the status of synchronisation and connection, as well as

allowing the user to change the sample rate and the synchronisation source for clocking.

The Liquid Channel™

any MIc pre and cOMpreSSOr In HIStOry

The Liquid Channel™ is a revolutionary channel strip that

can emulate any classic mic pre and compressor. Combining

radical new analogue mic preamp technology with Dynamic

Convolution™ techniques, and augmented by fully digital

controls and remote software, it provides the ultimate

fl uid vintage collection.

• Loaded with 40 classic mic preamp and 40

compressor emulations

• 100 programme memories provide full recall of

every setting

• LiquidControl software allows comprehensive remote

operation via USB

• 192kHz internal processing and ADC/DAC as standard

• Focusrite digital EQ based on the Forte Suite software

• Adjustable harmonic distortion accounts for variance

in vintage originals

WHAT IS DYNAMIC CONVOLUTION?

Dynamic Convolution is a unique, patented technology that

emulates the sonic properties of original compressors, EQs

and the amplifi cation element of mic preamps. Essentially,

it samples (as opposed to models), the effect a processor has

on the audio signal through the application of a unique, level-

dependant set of responses to that signal. These measured

responses, sampled at numerous levels and with a multitude

of setting combinations, are applied to the input stream on a

sample-by-sample basis for extremely convincing results.

Liquid Channel ShootoutIn Summer 2011, we put Liquid Channel through the ultimate test: an old versus new shootout

and blind test. We lined up a handful of Liquid Channels beside some of the original vintage

units that are modeled in the Liquid Channel and recorded the results.

To judge the shootout, we enlisted the help of Guy Massey (Abbey Road, Beatles Remasters)

and Marco Pasquariello (chief engineer, Snap! Studios, London). The results were astounding.

See for yourself at youtube.com/FocusriteTV!

Jono McCleeryFocusrite fi rst became acquainted with the music of singer/songwriter Jono McCleery in

late 2010, when a remix of his song 'Tomorrow' featured on the Ninja Tune XX Collection, a

compilation of music from the London-based record label and artist camp. By early 2011, we

were hearing more and more of Jono and his stunningly great music. He supported fellow

Ninja Tune artist Jamie Woon on his Uk tour in the spring, and by that time, we were just itching

to work with him. So when we needed to team up with an artist to feature in the Scarlett 2i2

promo video, Jono was our fi rst call.

You can fi nd out more about Jono here: www.jonomccleery.com

Tiff MoniqueTiffany Monique is best known as one third of Beyoncé's background vocalist trio The Mamas,

having been a permanent fi xture on the last two of Beyoncé's world tours. Tiff has also worked

with such greats as Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera & kelly Clarkson, but is

a recording artist in her own right too. She records demos on her travels with the Scarlett

2i2, and now her recordings made on the road are good enough to use in the fi nal track, as

she explains: "Before, I had a Radioshack microphone that I would just plug into the laptop. It

would give me an idea of what I was trying to do with the song, but the actual take itself was of

no use because of the audio quality. Now that I have the 2i2, I can actually use the recording

that was done in my home for the fi nished song."

I can just pull it out, plug my mic and headphones in and get to work.

It’s always nice to have something that you know gives good results. I was a tape op when Focusrite came along, and whenever I got the chance to try Focusrite equipment, it always sounded amazing. It’s something that I’ll always go for if it’s in a room, because I trust it and I know it always comes through.

The Focusrite sound is always nice on anything you want a lot of high fidelity to. Drum overheads always sound great, and it’s the same with strings recordings. It works really well on vocals; It helps me make the mix.
