GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM (GMO) TESTING

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are regulated and monitored by many countries. Our laboratory uses real time PCR to detect the genetic modification status of rice.

MANUAL SORTING FOR PHYSICAL ANALYSIS

Each grain of a representative sample is manually segregated on the basis of its physical characteristics grade and colour.

MYCOTOXINS

Liquid chromatography and ELISA techniques are used to identify and quantify the presence of toxins including:

• Aflatoxin (B1, B2, G1, G2) • Ochratoxin A • DON • ZON • Fuminosins

PESTICIDE RESIDUE ANALYSIS

MRL (maximum residue limits) are set by regulatory authorities for pesticides and define acceptable levels. We conduct pesticide residue analysis in accordance with Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) methods, to ensure consumer safety.

HEAVY METALS

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) techniques are used to identify contamination with arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead.

MELAMINE AND CYANURIC ACID

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with limits of quantification (LOQs) meeting requirements of EU and other regulations are used to identify contamination with melamine and cyanuric acid.

GERMINATION TESTING

Germination testing is conducted in accordance with industry standards, the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).

NUTRITIONAL FACTS

For nutritional labelling purposes, we test to identify and quantify the presence of: energy, carbohydrates, fat, protein, dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals. We can also complete an amino acid profile.

OTHER TESTS

• Starch content (Polarimetric) • Amylose content • Whiteness

Every lab has its own unique range of testing capabilities, read on for country-specific details and contacts.

SGS Malaysia was incorporated in 1971. In a country of 30 million people, requiring 2.5 million tons of rice annually to meet domestic demand, imports form an important part of Malaysia’s rice industry.

The government imposed the nation’s self-sufficiency policy to reduce the volume of rice imports and improve production of local rice crops. In 2013, Malaysia imported some 861,707 metric tons and in 2014, about 863,496 metric tons of rice, from Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, India and other countries.

To support the industry, we have a network of experienced and competent inspectors, technicians, chemists and agronomists to provide the following services:

• Supervision of discharge of rice in bags ex-conventional vessel

PHILIPPINESStarting as a representative agent in 1949, SGS has been an active participant in the Philippines’ growth, which includes the country’s efforts in domestic rice production, as well as its growing import business.

Ensuring safety is a high priority in the country, as rice crops are traded and imported. To assist, SGS offers inspection services, including discharge supervision for crops arriving for import.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the country produced 4.1 million metric tonnes and 4.3 million metric tonnes of rice, in 2013 and 2014, respectively. A crop of 4.3 million metric tonnes is expected for 2015.

Domestic demand for rice is such that the Philippines does not export rice. To meet demand the country imports rice to ensure food security under two schemes regulated by the National Food Authority, which is under the control of the Department of Agriculture.
