This job only took a few hours to turn the two logs into exquisite clean slabs.

Owen prepares the log for horizontal slabs, beginning by squaring off the top of the log.

Owen cuts through the log for the first slab off the top.

From a Sign Post to an Entertainment Feature Made of native Blue Gum timber, this beautifully crafted outdoor bar resembles the helm of a ship. Other blue gum timber milled for this client was used from the side of the road by council arborists.

The black marks are discoloration around nails.

The Makings of an Outdoor Shed

The further Owen cut into the log the more evident it became that the tree

had been used as a sign post its entire life.

This job in 2008 was to mill 34 200mm x 50mm (8" x 2") rafters from Blue Gum timber for a shed that client Michael Musket was building. This was the largest Blue Gum log Owen has had the opportunity to mill.

Owen’s mill set up with the log in place ready to be milled.

Michael didn’t appreciate the beauty of the timber, however, after Owen spent some time with him, Michael began to discover the

beauty the log displayed each time it was cut.

The boards are loaded onto a cane haul out tractor before being transported across Michael’s

property.

After milling the first log of the day Owen noticed they had cut through

the centre of a bullet, with no damage done to the blade or mill.

The cut boards are stacked and stored ready for use.

‘Sign’ Me Up These two locality signs started out as a single slab of Bloodwood which was the remains of a log that was sawn into 200mm x 50mm (10" x 2") boards to be used as the base of a tractor implement, and treads for a set of stairs.

Once cut with Owen’s WPF, the boards were put through the planner before being refined by the drum sander.

The slabs were then varnished before being passed on to an associate of Owen who did the engraving. This project took around 10 hours

excluding four hours of outsourced labour for the engraving.

Size no issue for the Peterson DWS This project for client Brett Windsor involved slabbing two giant Mango logs. Owen had previously done two milling jobs for Brett, which involved milling 200 off 125mm x 50mm (5" x 2") cattle yard rails, and had also slabbed a Mackay Cedar for him. Due to Brett’s property being near the ocean where sand is carried in the wind, the sticky bark of the Mango log caught the particles from the wind which slowed the milling process.
