Again, congratulations to all of these students on theiroutstanding efforts and remember that you are always a winnerwhen you do your very best!
FROM THE PRINCIPALAs Principal, my day-to-day work involves formal engagements, difficult decisions, working to ensure our students are learningto the best of their ability whilst our teachers are able to teach tothe best of theirs and many, many, many meetings. In this role,I interact with students, staff, parents and community membersconstantly in many differing capacities. And whilst I do look inon our 454 students and over 80 staff throughout the year, being able to spend time with each and every one on a dailybasis is often stretched to say the least.
At every turn, we are presented with opportunities which canenrich our lives and it is up to us to take advantage of them.Of course, not every enriching opportunity leads to an excitingadventure, but the chance to develop new skills, knowledge, friendships, interests or simply experience something whichgives us joy are abundant, especially here at Charters TowersSHS. Our music, sport, arts and STEM programs have fantasticopportunities for students throughout the year, whilst our manyextra-curricular activities have been developed to open ourstudents’ eyes to the world and their own strengths and talents.I strongly encourage every student to seize the opportunitiesoffered to them here at State High. Don’t become a passengerin your lifelong learning journey . . . take the driver’s seat!
As a school where providing quality education to develop theindividual in a caring environment is what we do each and everyday, this also means that each and every lesson absolutely
counts as a teaching and learning opportunity. Sometimesthere is a feeling amongst students that Term 4 is one wherethey can ‘sit back’; that all the really hard work is done for theyear. This could not be further from the truth. I expect that eachand every student will be focussed and doing their very bestin every lesson right up to the end of the year and that ourstandards of dress, behaviour and attendance will be just asexemplary as has been the expectation throughout each term.Only in this way, will we truly reach our individual goals andtogether, transform this great school into a high performing one.
“The distance is nothing when one has a motive” ~ Prideand Prejudice Jane Austen.
Year 12 Graduation
Last Friday saw our 2018 Year 12 Graduates enter into a newchapter as they walked out of the Charters Towers State HighSchool gates for the last time. A proud day for all familiesfilled with a lot of emotion. My Principal’s Address included thefollowing:
I reflected on all that I’ve watched you experience: achievingyour goals, making it through the rough times that come withgrowing up and, in some way, helped you celebrate andappreciate yourself, your successes and your life story thus far.I’ve thought a lot about what I could say to you here at YOURgraduation. I say to you, Class of 2018, What can we each doto make a difference in this world?, to be the change that wewant to see, to make a difference in the lives of others andourselves, to learn what each of us can you do to LIVE OURBEST STORY.
DREAM BIG. Always continue to learn. Take time to appreciateyour successes but always take responsibility for your failures.Be resilient, courageous and optimistic. LIVE YOUR BESTSTORY. More than anything, remember to be grateful.Gratitude opens the door to life and your story. Express yourgratitude today particularly to your parents, teachers and fellowgraduates, all who have supported you towards this milestonein life.
And now, as my few moments come to a close…
I hope that as you live your best story….Your dreams take you to the corners of your smiles…To the highest of your hopes…To the windows of your opportunities,And to the most special places your heart has ever known.
Congratulations Class of 2018.
Thank you to Mrs Kelly Kuhz, Mr Nathan Morris and MissGeorgie Thomas and their band of helpers – these events

Hill. I have moved here from William Ross State High School inTownsville. Even though I have only been here 5 weeks, it isalready the half way point of Term 4 and the days left to the endare marching along very quickly.
Awards evening was such a fabulous event to be part of, Isincerely enjoyed the opportunity to see the hard work anddedication of our students rewarded, and I am looking forwardto being involved with the Student Council next year and havingthe chance to work alongside our wonderful leaders.
Over the last few weeks I have spoken with many parents eitherin meetings or on the phone, and I am delighted at the level ofinvolvement and support that our students receive to help themthrough what can sometimes be a very challenging time in theirlives. I look forward to continuing these positive partnerships forthe benefit of our students and their outcomes.
Our year 9 students are currently working hard to meet therequirements of successfully completing their JCE (JuniorCertificate of Education) or JCIA (Junior Certificate of IndividualAchievement). Those students who meet the academicrequirements for these certificates will be duly recognised at ourJCE/JCIA ceremony later in the year, stay tuned.
With the end of the year approaching so quickly, we aresometimes easily distracted by the promise of holidays so closeand a festive season about to begin. Now is a timely reminderthat it is very important to stay focused, remain confident andfinish well. Attendance matters every day, right to the end.Assessment will be in full swing in many classes and studentsneed to ensure that they are catching up missed work andspeaking with their teachers if they have any concerns aboutspecific learning areas. If your child is away, please ensure thatyou contact the office as soon as possible with the reason fortheir absence and the expected length of time they will be away.

It’s Worth the Wait!
By Crystal-Lee Walsh
Another four years have gone by;Not a single athlete has given a sigh. For all their blood, sweat and tears,
They will get a million cheers. When the seven continents meet,
The Olympic values are shown head to feet;Friendship, respect and excellence are shown,
Along with courage, inspiration, determination andequality,
Keeping each sport known.Friendships are put to the test,
As they all put in their best,Playing within the rules,
Can at times be so cruel. But the best of us will show our grit,
In our cherished values of our mateship. We don’t tread this path alone,
We are a team, etched in history, forever known,The four year wait, with its unknowns,
With trust and courage to bring us home.Where all athletes are treated like kings and queens,
None different from each other, just exceptional humanbeings.
