Who I interviewed:

0 I carried out a focus group study with an 18 year old male who enjoys psychedelic rock and indie music, a 50 year old male who also enjoys psychedelic rock (his favourite band being The Beetles) and a 55 year old woman, who also enjoys indie rock, and loves bands like Yes and Pink Floyd.

Initial questions

0 First I asked them a few questions to get the group started, such as “what kind of music video do you like best?”

0 I got answers such as performance based ‘where they’re playing in a concert in front of a crowd’ and performance combined with concept. I asked for their favourite music videos and they said ‘Wonderwall- Oasis’ for the nostalgiaas it reminds him of another time, and the way the video cuts from concept to performance. ‘Next Girl-Black Keys’ for the attractive actresses and the contradictory message underneath as it’s ironic and humorous. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen’ for the visual artistic look of the video, and kaleidoscope-like patterns.

Feedback from listening to my chosen song:

0 I then played the focus group my chosen song and asked them what they would expect to see in a music video to the song.

0They suggested ideas such as, the band playing live in front of an audience, psychedelic colours and patterns, a church location with stained glass windows and actors wearing smart dress, like The Beatles. They also suggested slow, free-moving dancers in flowing outfits.

General ideas and changes

0 Finally, I showed my focus group my storyboard and asked them if there is anything they would change about it.

0They said in verse two(continued) it would be nice to have music notes on the lines and they feel there needs to be a conclusion to show the video has ended, an idea was that I could fade back to the intro shot. They said they liked the mixture of reality and animation and thought the video accurately identified the genre of the music.
