Note: Once locked, the vehiclecannot be unlocked for threeseconds. This is to allow you to pulla door handle and check if thevehicle is locked.

Press the locking button on thedriver’s or front passenger’s door orthe tailgate once to activate centrallocking and arm the alarm.

On vehicles without double locking,the direction indicators will flash twiceto confirm that the vehicle is locked.

All except convertible - Pressthe button twice within threeseconds to activate doublelocking and arm the alarm withinterior sensors.

Convertible only - Press thelocking button on one of the frontdoors or the tailgate once to activatedouble locking and arm the alarmwith interior sensors.

The direction indicators will flashtwice to confirm that the vehicle isdouble locked.

Global closing (driver's dooronly)

WARNINGTake care when using globalclosing. In an emergency, press

the button on the driver’s doorhandle to stop.

When locking the vehicle, hold thebutton pressed for at least twoseconds to close all windows and thesunroof.

Tailgate

Note: If the passive key is locatedwithin the tailgate detection range,only the tailgate can be opened. Theother doors will remain locked.

To open the luggage compartment,press the tailgate release switch.

Assembling the spare key

The spare key can be used in thefollowing ways:• To open the bonnet.• To lock and unlock the vehicle.• To start the engine.

Quick start

If the engine is running and a passivekey is no longer detected within thevehicle interior, PASSIVE KEYOUTSIDE CAR will appear in theinformation display and a chime willsound as soon as the door is closed.

If you no longer have a passive key,the vehicle can still be centrallylocked one more time without apassive key. Once locked, the vehiclecan only be unlocked using a validpassive key or spare key.

lap strap of the seat belt.Do not install a booster seat ora booster cushion with a seat

belt that is slack or twisted.Do not put the seat belt underyour child’s arm or behind its

back.Do not use pillows, books ortowels to boost your child’s

height.Make sure that your children sitin an upright position.Secure children that weigh morethan 15 kilogrammes but are

less than 150 centimetres tall in abooster seat or a booster cushion.

You can fit ISOFIX child restraintsusing the ISOFIX anchor points.

The ISOFIX system comprises of tworigid attachment arms on the childrestraint that attach to anchor pointson the rear seats, where the cushionand backrest meet. Tether anchorpoints may also be fitted.

WARNINGUse an anti-rotation devicewhen using the ISOFIX system,

e.g. support leg or top tether.

Route the tether strap to the anchorpoint. Tighten the tether strap to themanufacturer's instructions.

opened from outside.

Turn the key in the rear door in thedirection of the arrow to activate thelock. To deactivate the lock turn thekey in opposite direction to the arrow.

WARNINGDo not modify the front of thevehicle in any way as this can

adversely affect airbag deployment.

Note: A loud bang will be heardwhen an airbag deploys and it isnormal to see a cloud of harmlesspowdery residue.

The airbag system comprises thefollowing:

• single-stage inflatable nylon bags(airbags) with gas generators

• side airbags• curtain airbags• seat belt pretensioners• a seat belt reminder• crash sensors.

• a warning lamp in the instrumentpanel.

Reprogramming theunlocking function

ARMING THE ALARM

The system is armed as soon as thevehicle is locked and acts as adeterrent to unauthorised personswho attempt to open the doors,bonnet or luggage compartment, orremove the audio system.

The alarm sounds for 30 seconds ifan unauthorised person opens adoor, the luggage compartment orthe bonnet. The hazard flasher lightswill flash for five minutes.

Any attempt to start the enginewithout a valid key or to remove theaudio system sounds the alarmagain.

Automatic arming delay

The 20 seconds arming delay beginswhen the bonnet, luggagecompartment and all doors areclosed.

Interior sensors

WARNINGThis system functions correctlyonly if all windows and the

sunroof are completely closed. Inaddition to this, the sensors locatedin the interior lamp unit must not becovered up. The system should notbe activated if any persons, animalsor other moving objects are insidethe vehicle.

This system acts as a deterrentagainst unauthorised intrusion bysensing any movement within thevehicle.

Unauthorised entry into the vehicle’sinterior will trigger the alarm in thesame way as the anti-theft system.

The anti-theft alarm system for thetailgate is deactivated if the tailgateis unlocked using the button on theremote control or passive key. Onvehicles with the Key Free System, itis deactivated if a passive key islocated within the tailgate detectionrange when the tailgate is opened.

After closure, the alarm is once againarmed.

Britain and Ireland only

If the vehicle is unlocked using thekey or the spare key for the keylessentry system, a 12 second delaychime starts as soon as the driver’sdoor is opened. The alarm should bedeactivated during this period.

Vehicles without keyless entrysystem

To deactivate the alarm, insert thekey into the ignition and turn it toposition II.

Vehicles with keyless entrysystem

The alarm should be deactivated inone of the following ways:• If a valid passive key is located

within the vehicle interior, depressthe clutch pedal (manualtransmission) or brake pedal(automatic transmission), pushthe ignition switch in and turn it toposition II.

• Insert the spare key into theignition switch, push the ignitionswitch in and turn it to position II.

When the lever is moved to positionB with the ignition switched on, thewipers will cycle once regardless ofwhether the front screen is wet ordry.

Depending on the equipment fitted,when the ignition is switched on withthe lever already in position B, thewipers will not cycle until water isdetected on the windscreen.Alternatively, move the lever toanother position and then back to B,or operate the washer.

Thereafter, the rain sensor willcontinuously measure the amount ofwater on the windscreen and adjustthe speed of the front wipersautomatically (single wipe,intermittent, normal or high speedwipe).

Note: Main beam can be activatedonly when the autolamps feature hasturned on the headlamps.

Window anti-trapprotection

WARNINGSAnti-trap protection is not activewhile the electric window

memory is being reset. Make surethat there are no obstacles in the wayof the closing window.

Careless closing of the electricwindows can override the

anti-trap protection and causeinjuries.

The electric windows will stopautomatically while closing andreverse some distance if there is anobstacle in the way.

To override anti-trap protection whenthere is a resistance, e. g. in thewinter, proceed as follows:

Close the window twice until itreaches the resistance and let itreverse.

WARNINGWhile the window is beingclosed for the third time, the

anti-trap function is disabled. Makesure there are no obstacles in theway of the closing window.

Close the window a third time to theresistance. The anti-trap function isdisabled and the window cannot beclosed automatically. The window willoverride the resistance and can thenbe closed fully.

If the window does not close afterthe third attempt, have it checked byan expert.

Release the switch and lift it again,two or three times, for one moresecond.

Open the window and try to close itautomatically.

Reset and repeat procedure if thewindow does not close automatically.

Oil temperature gauge

Indicates the temperature of the theengine oil.

At normal operating temperature, theneedle remains within the normalarea.

If it enters the red section, the engineis overheating. Reduce engine speedas soon as safely possible to allowthe engine to cool. If the engine iscontinued to be driven at high enginespeeds with the needle in the redsection, the engine speed will bereduced automatically to preventengine damage.

This gauge indicates thetemperature of the engine oil, notthe oil level.

Turbocharger boost gauge

Indicates the added intake pressureprovided by the turbocharger.

Oil pressure gauge

WARNINGDriving with your oil pressuregauge pointer continuously in

the red section of the scale maydamage the engine.

Note: When the engine is cold, oilpressure close to 5 bar may beindicated. This is normal. As theengine warms up, the oil pressure willdrop.

This gauge indicates engine oilpressure up to a recommended safemaximum of 5 bar.

During normal driving the indicatedoil pressure will vary with enginespeed, the pressure rising as enginespeed rises and dropping as enginespeed drops.

If the engine oil pressure drops belowthe normal range, the oil pressuregauge pointer will drop into the redsection of the gauge scale and theengine oil pressure warning lamp inthe main instrument cluster willilluminate. Stop the vehicle as soonas safely possible and switch off theengine immediately. Check the oillevel and add oil if needed. SeeEngine oil check (page 218).

Tachometer

On vehicles with a diesel engine, thetachometer goes to 6 000revolutions per minute.

Fuel gauge

The arrow adjacent to the fuel pumpsymbol indicates on which side of thevehicle the fuel filler cap is located.

The indicator will illuminatewhen the front fog lampsare in use.

Glow plug indicator

If the glow plug indicatorlamp illuminates, wait untilthe it extinguishes before

starting.

Headlamp indicator

The headlamp indicatorilluminates when theheadlamps are on dipped

beam or when the side and tail lampsare on.

Ignition warning lamp

Note: If the battery voltage is toohigh or too low, the ignition warninglamp will illuminate and the heatedwindscreen and heated rear window,the auxiliary heater or the airconditioning may switch on or offautomatically.

If it illuminates whilst driving,switch off all unnecessaryelectrical equipment and

drive immediately to the nearestexpert.

Low fuel level warning lamp

The warning lamp illuminateswhen there is enough fuel inthe tank for the vehicle to

travel 80 km (50 miles). This iscalculated based on average fuelconsumption.

Main beam indicator

Illuminates when theheadlamps are on mainbeam or when the

headlamp flasher is used.

Maximum engine RPMwarning lamp

Illuminates when themaximum engine RPM(revolutions per minute) is

reached.

Oil pressure warning lamp

WARNINGDo not resume the journey if theoil level is correct. Have the

engine checked by an expert.

Seat belt reminder

WARNINGSThe seat belt reminder remainsin stand-by mode after the

driver/front passenger has fastenedhis/her seat belt. It will be reactivatedif the driver/front passengerunbuckles his/her seat belt.

Never sit on top of a buckledseat belt to avoid the seat belt

reminder. The restraint system canonly work properly if passengershave buckled up their seat belts.

Note: Placing objects on the frontpassenger’s seat when it is notoccupied may trigger the sensors inthe seat and activate the seat beltreminder if the seat belt is notengaged.

When the vehicle’s speedexceeds 23 km/h (14 mph),the seat belt reminder will

illuminate if the driver’s/frontpassenger's seat belt is unbuckled.The seat belt reminder will not go outuntil the driver/front passenger hasfastened his/her seat belt.

To deactivate the seat belt reminderfor one ignition cycle, the driver mustbuckle and unbuckle the seat beltwithin 3 seconds with the ignitionswitched on.

AUXILIARY HEATER

Programmable auxiliaryheater

WARNINGSThe programmable auxiliaryheater must not be operated in

enclosed spaces, at filling stations ornear sources of combustible vapoursor dust.

The programmable auxiliaryheater should be switched on

for approximately 10 minutes at leastonce a month all year round. Thisprevents the water pump and heatermotor from seizing.

To avoid corrosion, the coolantin your vehicle should contain at

least 10 % antifreeze all year round.

Note: The programmable auxiliaryheater will only operate if there is atleast 7.5 litres of fuel in the fuel tank.

Note: The heating depends on theoutside air temperature.

Note: It is possible that when theprogrammable auxiliary heater isactivated, exhaust fumes may comefrom under the sides of the vehicle.This is normal.

Note: On vehicles with manualclimate control the heating of thevehicle interior is dependent on thetemperature, air distribution andblower control settings.

The programmable auxiliary heateroperates independently of the vehicleheater by heating the engine’scoolant circuit. It is fed from thevehicle fuel tank.

Used properly, the programmableauxiliary heater provides the followingbenefits:• It preheats the interior of the

vehicle.• It keeps the windows clear of ice

in the event of frost and preventscondensation.

• It avoids cold starts and allows theengine to reach operatingtemperature sooner.

The programmable auxiliary heatermay also be used while the vehicle isin motion to help the vehicle heaterand warm up the interior morequickly.

To prevent the battery fromdischarging:• Once the programmable auxiliary

heater has performed one heatingcycle, the next programmedheater time will only be carried outif the vehicle’s engine has beenstarted in between.

• After a heating cycle, the vehicleshould be driven for at least theperiod of the heating cycle.

Programming the auxiliaryheater

The auxiliary heater is programmedusing the information display. SeeInformation displays (page 104).

Auxiliary heater

The diesel auxiliary heater (PTCelectrical heater) aids in warming theengine and the interior compartmenton vehicles with diesel engines. It isautomatically switched on or offdepending on the outsidetemperature, the coolanttemperature and the alternator load.

Fuel operated heater

The fuel operated heater aids inwarming the engine and the interiorcompartment on vehicles with apetrol or diesel engine. It isautomatically switched on or offdepending on the outsidetemperature and the coolanttemperature, unless it has beendeactivated by the driver.

When the fuel operated heater isoperating, a message appears in theinformation display.

The fuel operated heater can bedeactivated using the informationdisplay. See Information displays(page 104).

ELECTRIC SUNROOF

WARNINGBefore operating the electricsunroof you should verify it is

free of obstructions and ensure thatchildren and/or pets are not in theproximity of the sunroof opening.Failure to do so could result in seriouspersonal injury. It is the primaryresponsibility of the supervising adultsto never leave a child unattended ina vehicle and to never leave the keysin an unattended vehicle.

Note: When the switches areoperated often during a short periodof time, the system might becomeinoperable for a certain time toprevent damage due to overheating.

Note: The electric sunroof can alsobe operated with the ignition off viathe global opening and global closingfunction. See Global opening andclosing (page 51).

There are two ways of opening thesunroof – the rear of the sunroof liftsopen or the sunroof opens from thefront, sliding back under the roof. Thesunroof opens and closes whilst theswitch is pressed.

Sunroof anti-trapprotection

WARNINGSThe anti-trap function isdeactivated until the memory

has been reset. Careless closing ofthe window can cause injuries.

Careless closing of the electricsunroof can override the

anti-trap protection and causeinjuries.

The sunroof will stop automaticallywhile closing and reverse somedistance if there is an obstacle in theway.

To override anti-trap protection whenthere is a resistance, e. g. in thewinter, proceed as follows:

WARNINGWhile the sunroof is beingclosed for the third time, the

anti-trap function is disabled. Makesure there are no obstacles in theway of the closing sunroof.

Close the sunroof a third time to theresistance. The anti-trap function isdisabled and the sunroof cannot beclosed automatically. The sunroof willoverride the resistance and can thenbe closed fully.

If the sunroof does not close after thethird attempt, have it checked by anexpert.

Sunroof safety mode

WARNINGThe anti-trap function is notactive during this procedure.

Make sure that there are noobstacles in the way of the closingsunroof.

If the system detects a malfunction,it enters a safety mode. The sunroofwill move for only about 0.5 secondsat a time and then stop again. Closethe sunroof by pressing the buttonagain when the sunroof stopsmoving. When the rear of the sunroofis lifted, lift the rear all the way andthen close the sunroof. Have thesystem checked by an expertimmediately.

Sunroof relearning

WARNINGThe anti-trap function is notactive during this procedure.

Make sure that there are noobstacles in the way of the closingsunroof.

In case the sunroof no longer closesproperly, follow this relearningprocedure:

• Tilt the rear of the sunroof as faras possible. Release the button.

• Press and hold the same buttonagain for 30 seconds until you seethe sunroof move.

• Release the button andimmediately press and hold itagain. The sunroof will close, openfully and then close again. Do notrelease the button before thesunroof has reached the closedposition for the second time.

If the button is not pressedcontinuously, the relearning functionwill be interrupted. Start theprocedure once more from thebeginning.

If the battery has been disconnectedthe vehicle may exhibit some unusualdriving characteristics for approx. 8kilometres (5 miles) afterreconnecting the battery.

This is because the enginemanagement system must realignitself with the engine. Any unusualdriving characteristics during thisperiod may be disregarded.

Ignition switched on, all electricalcircuits operational. Warning andindicator lamps illuminate. This is thekey position when driving, and mustalso be selected when being towed.

Postion III

Starter motor activated. Release thekey as soon as the engine starts.

If the engine does not start afterthree attempts wait 10 seconds andfollow the Flooded engineprocedure.

If starting difficulty is experienced attemperatures below -25ºC, depressthe accelerator pedal ¼ to ½ of itstravel to assist starting.

Flooded engine

Depress the clutch pedal fully.

Slowly depress the accelerator fully,hold it in this position and start theengine.

If the engine does not start repeatthe Cold/hot engine procedure.

Vehicles with a Flexfuelengine

Starting at low ambienttemperatures

When the temperature is expectedto be lower than –15°C and thevehicle is filled with bio ethanol E 85,an engine block heater should beused to facilitate starting.

If the temperature is expected toremain below –15°C, it isrecommended that you increase theproportion of petrol in the tank bytopping up with 95 octane unleadedpetrol if the tank is not already full.About 10 litres of petrol will reducethe proportion of bio ethanol E 85 ina ¾ full tank from 85% to 70%.

If, at very low temperatures, the tankis filled with only bio ethanol E 85 andthere is no way to use an engineblock heater, you may experiencedifficulties starting the engine.

If the engine fails to start, proceed asfollows:1. Depress the accelerator pedal 1/3

to 1/2 of its travel.2. Turn the ignition key to position

III.3. Release the ignition key as soon

as the engine has started andrelease the accelerator pedalgradually as the engine speedincreases.

4. If the engine fails to start, depressthe accelerator pedal fully andrepeat steps 2 and 3.

During starting, the fuel injectors areturned off as long as the acceleratorpedal is depressed. This can be usedto drain excessive fuel from theintake manifold after severalunsuccessful starting attempts.

If the battery has been disconnectedor after the fuel type has beenchanged, the idle speed may beirregular. This will improve after 10 to30 seconds.

users, always stop refuelling after thefuel nozzle stops the second time.Additional fuel will fill the expansionspace in the fuel tank which couldlead to fuel overflowing.

The fuel system is underpressure. There is a risk of injury

if the fuel system is leaking. Do notuse any kind of flames or heat nearthe fuel system.

FUEL QUALITY

Use only high quality fuel without anysupplemental additives or otherengine treatments.

Vehicles with a petrolengine

Use unleaded petrol according tospecification EN 228 or equivalentwith minimum 95 octane. Leadedfuel or fuel/additives containing othermetallic compounds (e.g.manganese-based) may damagethe emission system.

Vehicles with a Flexfuelengine

WARNINGDo not modify the fuel systemconfiguration or the

components in the system. Do notreplace the fuel system or thecomponents with parts not speciallydesigned to be used with bio ethanol.Ford has specially designedmaterials, components and systemsfor ethanol−fuelled vehicles, withprecisely calibrated systems forefficient operation. The use of othercomponents and materials cancreate an untested configurationwhich could result in fire, personalinjury or engine damage.

Your Flexifuel vehicle can beoperated on unleaded petrolaccording to specification EN 228 orequivalent with minimum 95octane or bio ethanol E 85. It canalso be operated on any mixture ofthe two. Methanol must not be usedinstead of bio ethanol E 85. Thecorrect fuel type for your vehicle isshown on a decal on the inside of thefuel filler flap.

The vehicle will operate well oncommercial quality 95 octaneunleaded petrol, but only high qualitybio ethanol E 85 offers the sameprotection and performance.

Long-term storage

Due to small amounts of corrosiveimpurities that may be found in thebio ethanol E 85, it is recommendedthat you fill the tank with only 95octane unleaded petrol prior tolong-term storage of your Flexifuelvehicle.

Vehicles with a dieselengine

Use diesel fuel according tospecification EN 590 or equivalent.Do not mix it with any oil, petrol orother liquids. Diesel fuels whichcontain a mix of up to 5 % RME (biodiesel) are acceptable.

Prolonged use of supplementaladditives to prevent fuel waxing is notrecommended. Do not addkerosene, paraffin or petrol to dieselfuels.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Driving with a catalyticconverter

CAUTIONSAvoid running out of fuel.

Do not crank the engine for longperiods.Do not run the engine when aspark plug lead is disconnected.Do not push-start or tow-startyour vehicle. Use booster cables.

Parking

WARNINGDo not park your vehicle overdry leaves or dry grass. The

The Durashift CVT transmission inyour vehicle is an electronicallycontrolled transmission. All ratios arecontinuously variable.

This transmission also allows you tochange gear manually (similar to amanual transmission).

The shifting behaviour of the DurashiftCVT can be adjusted to suit yourpersonal preferences and drivingstyle. See Personalised settings(page 108).

This option can be selected at anytime. Move the selector lever to D,and then guide it to the right.

ENGAGEMENT INPROGRESSand PRESS BRAKEPEDAL: At low outsidetemperatures, after starting theengine it may take the Durashift CVTtransmission several seconds toengage R (Reverse) or D (Drive). Inthis case, these messages appearalternately in the display until theselected gear has been engaged. Ifthe brake pedal is not helddepressed, the transmission will notengage the gear.

Keep the brake pedal depressed untilthe messages ENGAGEMENT INPROGRESS and PRESS BRAKEPEDAL disappear from the display.

TRANSMISSIONMALFUNCTION: Indicates amalfunction of the automatictransmission. Have the transmissionchecked by an expert immediately.

Driving with automatictransmission

To avoid excessive wear on thetransmission when shifting betweenforward and reverse (rocking) keepthe engine speed as low as possible.

A kickdown function is providedwhich makes full use of the enginepower when overtaking or driving upsteep gradients.

When the accelerator pedal isdepressed beyond its resistancepoint, the transmission will down-shiftinto a lower gear or to the ratio whichdelivers the maximum acceleration.

In position D, the Durashift CVTtransmission continuously varies theratios. You will not notice anygearshifts.

In manual shifting mode, thetransmission shifts up automaticallyin steps. In this mode, you will noticethe gearshifts.

If the accelerator is not pressedbeyond the resistance point, theengine speed will increase tomaximum. No kickdown effect willresult.

Releasing the accelerator pedal backpast the resistance point disengagesthe kickdown function.

Drive modes

The automatic transmission adaptsto support the current drivingconditions.

Cold mode

The transmission will display adifferent shifting behaviour to normalin cold conditions.

Hot mode

When high ambient temperaturesand/or loads prevail, the transmissionwill display a different shiftingbehaviour to normal. On vehicles witha Durashift CVT transmission, themessage TRANSMISSIONMALFUNCTION will appear in theinformation display. SeeInformation messages (page121).

Fast off

If you release the accelerator pedalquickly, the transmission maintainsthe current gear/ratio.

Adaptive sport mode

The transmission recognizes sportydriving and supports this with theappropriate shifting behaviour.

Adaptive shift speed

Durashift CVT only

If you move the accelerator pedalfast, you get fast transmission ratiochanges. Slow pedal movementsresult in slow changes.

Downhill mode

Durashift CVT only

The transmission recognizes downhilldriving conditions and supports withincreased engine braking.

Uphill mode

Durashift CVT only

The transmission recognizes uphilldriving, trailer towing and other highload conditions and supports withincreased engine speed to providemore engine power.

Cornering

Durashift CVT only

The transmission recognizes whenyou drive round a bend and maintainsthe current ratio.

vehicle (approximately 30centimetres to the rear and above orbelow the sensors).

If you use a high pressure sprayto wash your vehicle, only spray

the sensors briefly from a distancenot less than 20 centimetres (8inches).

Note: The parking aid may emit falsetones if it detects a signal using thesame frequency as the sensors or ifthe vehicle is fully laden.

Note: The outer sensors may detectthe side walls of a garage. If thedistance between the outer sensorand the side wall remains constantfor three seconds, the tone willswitch off. As you continue, the innersensors will detect rearward objects.

USING THE PARKING AID

not correctly detect obstacles.Take particular care whenreversing with a tow ball arm or

rear fitted accessories e.g. a bicyclecarrier, as the rear parking aid will onlyindicate the distance from thebumper to the obstacle.

The parking aid does not detectobstacles moving away from the

vehicle. They will only be detectedshortly after they start to movetowards the vehicle again.

Note: The parking aid is deactivatedautomatically when any trailer lampsor lighting boards are connected tothe 13-pin socket using a Fordapproved trailer tow module.

Note: Keep the sensors free fromdirt, ice and snow. Do not clean withsharp objects.

The parking aid is automaticallyactivated when you select reversegear with the ignition switched on.

Parking aid

You will hear an intermittent tone ata distance of up to 180 centimetresbetween the obstacle and rearbumper and 60 centimetres to theside. Decreasing the distanceaccelerates the intermittent tone. Acontinuous tone will start at adistance of less than 30 centimetres.

Note: If a high pitch tone is heard forthree seconds, this indicates amalfunction. The system will switchoff automatically if it malfunctions.Have this checked as soon aspossible.

Convertible only

CAUTIONDo not open the convertible topin confined spaces. This could

cause damage to the luggagecompartment lid. See Opening theconvertible top (page 190).

You will hear a continuous warningtone when you operate theconvertible roof if an object isdetected less than 30 centimetresfrom the rear bumper.

WARNINGDon not use cruise control inheavy traffic, on twisty roads or

when the road surface is slippery.

The cruise control systemautomatically adjusts the poweroutput of the engine to maintain thestored speed. When travellingdownhill, vehicle speed may increaseabove the stored speed as thesystem does not apply the brakes.In this case, changing down a gearand then pressing the RES buttonmay assist the system in returningthe vehicle to the stored speed.

The system will not function until thevehicle speed is above 40 km/h (25mph).

Place loads as low and central to theaxle(s) of the trailer as possible. If youare towing with an unladen vehicle,the load in the trailer should beplaced toward the nose, within themaximum nose load, as this gives thebest stability.

The stability of the vehicle to trailercombination is very much dependanton the quality of the trailer.

Above 1 000 metres in high altituderegions, the stipulated maximumpermitted gross train mass must bereduced by 10% for every 1 000metres.

TOWING THE VEHICLEON FOUR WHEELS

WARNINGSThe ignition key must be set toposition II when the vehicle is

being towed so that the steering,direction indicators and brake lampsare fully operational. Since the brakeservo and the power steering do notoperate with the engine switched off,you will need to exert greater forceto the brake pedal and steeringwheel. Make allowances for theincreased braking distance andheavier steering.

To prevent damage you mustnot push- or tow-start your

vehicle. Use booster cables and abooster battery. See Usingbooster cables (page 228).

Note: Observe the safetyregulations that are valid for towinga vehicle depending on country.

When towing always drive off slowlyand smoothly without jerking thetowing vehicle. Excessive tow ropetension could result in damage toeither vehicle.

Towing vehicles withautomatic transmission

WARNINGSNever tow a vehicle with anautomatic transmission faster

than 50 km/h (30 mph) or furtherthan 50 kilometres (30 miles).

Never tow a vehicle backwardswith the drive wheels turning. If

this instruction is not adhered to, itcould cause damage to theautomatic transmission.

Push- or tow-starting is notpossible on a vehicle fitted with

an automatic transmission. Usebooster cables. See Usingbooster cables (page 228).

When a vehicle with an automatictransmission is towed, the selectorlever must be in position N (neutral).

Under certain conditions, the fan maycontinue to run for several minutesafter you have switched the engineoff.

ENGINE OIL CHECK

WARNINGDo not use oil additives or otherengine treatments. They are

unnecessary and could, undercertain conditions, lead to enginedamage which is not covered byFord Warranty.

The oil consumption of new enginesreaches the normal value only afterapproximately 5 000 km (3 000miles).

Make sure the vehicle is standing onlevel ground. Check the engine oilbefore starting the engine. If theengine was running, switch it off andwait some minutes for the engine oilto flow back into the sump beforechecking it. Pull out the dipstick, wipeit with a clean, non-fluffy cloth,re-insert it completely and pull it outonce more.

If the level lies between the marks,there is no need to refill. Hot oil mayexceed the MAX mark by somemillimetres due to thermal expansion.

If it lies at the MIN mark refill usingonly engine oil meeting the Fordspecification.

The coolant level should be betweenthe MIN and the MAX mark whenthe engine is cold. Hot coolantexpands and may, therefore, extendbeyond the MAX mark.

WARNINGTake great care when addingcoolant. Avoid spillage on any

part of the engine.

The coolant should be added whenthe engine is cold. If coolant has tobe added when the engine is hot, firstwait 10 minutes for the engine tocool. Unscrew the cap slowly. Anypressure will escape while you areturning the cap. Fully remove the cap.

Add coolant that meets the FordSpecification. See Technicalspecifications (page 222).

To close, turn the cap clockwise untilit clicks.

When the vehicle is new, the coolingsystem is filled with coolant whichoffers anti−freeze protection downto approximately −25 ºC.

BRAKE AND CLUTCHFLUID CHECK

• Connect the positive (+) terminalof the flat battery to the positive(+) terminal of the booster battery.

• Connect the negative (–) terminalof the booster battery to the mainbody ground bolt at the left handside suspension turret of theengine to be started. Do notconnect to the negative (–)terminal of the flat battery.

• Make sure that the booster cablesare clear of moving parts of theengine.

To start the engine

• Run the engine of the vehicle withthe booster battery at moderatelyhigh speed.

• Start the engine of the vehicle withthe flat battery.

• Run both vehicles for a minimumof three minutes beforedisconnecting the leads.

TYRE CARE

If you have to mount a kerb, do soslowly and, if possible, approach itwith the wheels at right-angles to thekerb. Avoid steep and sharp edgedobstacles. Do not scrub the tyresidewalls when parking.

Regularly examine the tyre surfacefor cuts, foreign bodies and unevenwear. An uneven tread wear patterncould indicate faulty wheel alignment.

Tyre pressure

A tyre pressure decal is located onthe door pillar on the driver’s side.

TYRE REPAIR KIT

General information

WARNINGSCompliance with theseinstructions is vital to ensuring

vehicle safety. Non-compliance withthese instructions means risking tyredamage, which can affect vehiclehandling and lead to loss of vehiclecontrol. This may result in seriousinjury or death.

Do not use the ContiMobilityKitif the tyre has already been

damaged as a result of being drivenunderinflated. Do not try to sealdamage other than that locatedwithin the visible tread of the tyre. Donot try to seal damage to the tyre’ssidewall.

Note: Remember that emergencyroadside tyre repair kits only providetemporary mobility. Regulationsconcerning tyre repair after usage ofContiMobilityKit may differ fromcountry to country. You shouldconsult a tyre specialist for advice.

Wheels and tyres

The ContiMobilityKit seals most tyrepunctures to temporarily restoremobility. The system consists of acompressor and a sealant, andserves to effectively and convenientlyseal punctures in car tyres caused,for example, by nails or similar objectswith a diameter of up to 6 mm (¼inch).

Depending on the type and extent oftyre damage, some tyres can onlybe partially sealed or not sealed at all.Loss of tyre pressure can affectvehicle handling, leading to loss ofvehicle control.

Empty sealant bottles can bedisposed of together with normalhousehold waste. Remains of liquidsealant must be returned to yourdealer or disposed of in compliancewith local waste disposal regulations.

Using the ContiMobilityKitsafely

• Drive with caution and avoidmaking sudden steering or drivingmanoeuvres, especially if thevehicle is heavily loaded or you aretowing a trailer.

• The system will provide you withan emergency temporary repair,enabling you to continue yourjourney to the next vehicle or tyredealer, or to drive a maximumdistance of 200 km (125 miles).

• Do not exceed a maximum speedof 80 km/h (50 mph).

• Store the ContiMobilityKit safelyand secure it in the vehicle’sluggage compartment. Storing itanywhere in the passengercompartment is not advisable asit could strike an occupant in theevent of a sudden stop or collisionand cause injury.

• Keep the ContiMobilityKit out ofthe reach of children.

• Use the ContiMobilityKit only forthe vehicle with which it wassupplied.

• If used for other than its intendedpurpose, the ContiMobilityKit maycause severe accident or injurydue to the fact that compressedair can act as an explosive orpropellant.

• Park your vehicle at the roadsideso that you do not obstruct theflow of traffic and so that you areable to use the ContiMobilityKitwithout being in danger.

• Apply the parking brake, even ifyou have parked on a level road,to make sure that the vehicle willnot move.

• Do not attempt to remove foreignobjects like nails or screwspenetrating the tyre. Leave themas they are.

• Leave the engine running whilethe ContiMobilityKit is in use, butnot if the vehicle is in an enclosedor poorly ventilated area.

• Never leave the ContiMobilityKitunattended while in use.

• Do not keep the compressoroperating for more than 10minutes otherwise there is a riskof it overheating.

• Replace the sealant canister witha new one before the expirationdate (see top of bottle) isreached.

Repairing a puncture

You can temporarily repair a tyrepuncture in two steps.

First pump the tyre sealant and airinto the tyre (see Step 1). Immediatelythereafter, drive a short distance (3km) in order to distribute the sealantin the tyre. After that, check the tyrepressure and pump more air into thetyre if necessary (see Step 2).

Inform all other users of the vehiclethat the tyre has been temporarilysealed with the ContiMobilityKit andmake them aware of the specialdriving conditions to be observed.

Pull the protective cap G off the endof the hose and screw the hose Hfirmly onto the valve of the damagedtyre.

Make sure that the compressorswitch J is switched to 0.

Insert power plug C into the cigarlighter socket or auxiliary powersocket.

Start the engine (only if the vehicle isoutdoors or in a well ventilated area).

WARNINGCheck the sidewall of the tyreprior to inflation. If there are any

cracks, bumps or similar damage, donot attempt to inflate the tyre. Do notstand directly beside the tyre whilethe compressor is pumping. Watchthe sidewall of the tyre. If any cracks,bumps or similar damage appear,turn off the compressor and let theair out by means of the pressure reliefvalve I. In this case, do not continuedriving with this tyre.

Note: When pumping in the sealantthrough the tyre valve, the pressuremay rise up to 6 bar but will dropagain after about 30 seconds.

Press compressor switch J to I.

WARNINGIf the tyre inflation pressure doesnot reach 1.8 bar within 7

minutes, the tyre may have sufferedexcessive damage, making atemporary repair impossible. In thiscase, do not continue driving with thistyre.

Inflate the tyre for no longer than 7minutes to an inflation pressure ofminimum 1.8 bar and a maximum of3.5 bar. Switch off the compressorbriefly in order to read the currenttyre pressure from the pressuregauge K.

Once a tyre inflation pressure of atleast 1.8 bar has been reached,switch the compressor to 0.

Remove the power plug from thecigar lighter socket or auxiliary powersocket.

Quickly unscrew the hose from thetyre valve and replace the protectivecap G. Fasten the valve cap again.

Leave the bottle in the holder.

Make sure the ContiMobilityKit, thelid of the bottle and the orange capare stored safely, but are still easilyaccessible, in the vehicle. The kit willbe needed again when you checkthe tyre pressure.

WARNINGIf heavy vibrations, unsteadysteering behavior or noises

should occur while driving, reduceyour speed and drive with caution toa place where it is safe for you tostop the vehicle. Recheck the tyreand its pressure. If the tyre pressureis less than 1.3 bar or if there are anycracks, bumps or similar damagevisible, do not continue driving withthis tyre.

Immediately start and drive for about3 km (2 miles) so that the sealant canseal the damaged area. Do not driveany faster than 80 km/h (50 mph)(observe the sticker indicating themaximum permissible speed).

Checking the tyre pressure

Stop the vehicle after driving about 3km (2 miles). Check and, wherenecessary, adjust the pressure of thedamaged tyre.

Remove the protective cap G fromthe end of the hose.

Screw the hose H firmly onto thevalve of the damaged tyre.

Read the tyre pressure from thepressure gauge K.

If the pressure of the sealant-filledtyre is 1.3 bar or more, it must nowbe adjusted to the pressure specifiedfor your vehicle.

Make sure that the compressorswitch J is switched off to 0.

Insert the power plug C into the cigarlighter socket or auxiliary powersocket.

WARNINGIt may cause asphyxiation if theengine is allowed to run in a

non−ventilated or poorly ventilatedarea (e.g. inside a building).

Start the engine (only if the vehicle isoutdoors or in a well ventilated area).

Switch the compressor on to I andpump the tyre up to the specified tyrepressure.

Switch the compressor off and checkthe tyre pressure again. If tyrepressure is too high, deflate the tyreto the specified pressure using thepressure relief valve I.

Once you have inflated the tyre to itscorrect tyre pressure, switch off thecompressor, remove the plug fromthe socket, unscrew the hose, fastenthe valve cap and replace theprotective cap G.

Leave the bottle in the holder andstore the ContiMobilityKit away safelyin the luggage compartment.

WARNINGBefore driving, ensure tyre isadjusted to recommended

inflation pressure. Monitor tyrepressure until the sealed tyre isreplaced. Proceed as describedabove from point 2 onwards in thesection Step 2: Checking the tyrepressure.

Drive to the nearest expert to get thedamaged tyre replaced. Before thetyre is removed from the rim, informyour tyre dealer that the tyre containssealant (see separate tyredemounting instructions). Both thehose and the canister of sealant needto be replaced after using theContiMobilityKit. Sealant deposits ina used hose may impair properfunctioning of the ContiMobilityKit.

USING WINTER TYRES

If winter tyres are used, the tyrepressures recommended by the tyremanufacturers should be adheredto.

USING SNOW CHAINS

Note: Snow chains must not befitted to 205/50 R 17 or 225/40 R 18tyres.

Use only the recommended small linksnow chains on the driving wheels(front).

Do not exceed 50 km/h (30 mph).Remove the chains immediately onsnow-free roads.

The ABS system will continue tofunction normally.

In order to avoid damagingfull-diameter wheel covers, theyshould be removed before drivingwith snow chains.

Vehicles with stabilitycontrol (ESP)

Vehicles with stability control (ESP)may exhibit some unusual drivingcharacteristics which can be avoidedby switching the system off. SeeUsing stability control (page 175).
