Display Resilience and Courage

As an Aboriginal government employee I have been attacked in many forums by disgruntled Aboriginal community members, and I have at all times maintained my dignity, been apolitical and negotiated safe outcomes for myself and other community members. Criticism is cheap and I have been placed in many hostile situations where I have had to give frank honest advice in the face of strong contrary views.

I have accepted undue criticism on many occasions when the only viable solution was to “agree to disagree” and move on to other topics. I have facilitated many forums and addressed many workshops and my conflict resolution and mediation skills come to the fore when these situations arise.

Act with Integrity

I have been employed by State Training Services as a Training Coordinator since 1999. During this time I have always represented STS in an honest ethical and professional manner & I have encouraged others to do so as well. I have mentored and trained many staff and outside individuals to support a culture of integrity within the team/unit. I am able to quickly evaluate new policy, procedures and legislation and I utilise this ability to provide effective direction and supervision to all staff. I have always been vigilant to report misconduct, illegal and misappropriate behavior.

Communicate effectively

I have addressed and facilitated many forums/workshops/seminars and I have always had to adapt my presentations to the target audiences. The content I have delivered has many times been complex and I have had to deliver my message clearly to ensure there were no misunderstandings.

I take pride in my ability to write fluently and I have a Diploma of Community Services (with distinction) which attests to my ability. As a person with a profound hearing disability I have always been conscious of body language and other cues which the hearing community take for granted, including non-verbal communication; and I adapt my style when necessity dictates.

Commit to customer Service

As a Training Coordinator with over 17 years’ experience in Training Services NSW I have always supported a quality customer service. In my role as ATC I have also performed many of the functions of TC (exercised TC delegations) while the substantive TC was on leave or on occasions when the TC was unavailable.

I have recently acted as the TSM in the Illawarra region during April and I undertook Strategic Relationships Manager duties; and as part of this process I had to identify and respond quickly to customer needs with respect to Smart & Skilled provider under-utilisation of financial caps. For example after having contacted some providers it was evident that changes had to be made with respect to under and over utilisation of their financial caps. This required increases and/or decreases to the entitlement full qualifications (EFQ) and/or

targeted priorities full qualifications (TPFQ) financial caps. I have extensive experience in financial, project and program management and I am quite capable of understanding new procedures and processes in a very short time frame.

As the ATC in this region I have been called in to resolve many dispute situations with Aboriginal learners; and I have had to navigate through many circumstances which required a rational and sensitive approach; taking account cultural obligations and customs. I liaise regularly with RTOs, ITABs and other key stakeholders.

I currently co-chair the Illawarra Family and Community Services Aboriginal Community Consultative Group under the Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion framework 2015-2018. This group monitors the FACS individual agencies such as ADHC, Community Services, and Housing NSW performances under the KPIs for the ACIF.

Deliver results

I have a history of delivering results to agreed budgets, timeframes and standards. I have always taken the initiative to progress my own and team/unit work and for example, I introduced the quarterly Regional team meetings for the Illawarra NCAP and AEDO projects to help overcome isolation and to share information across the region and between the auspice projects. This led to better understanding of the department’s requirements of each project with respect to outcomes and activities. I have always negotiated priorities for each project and provide leadership for each NCAP and AEDO officer in my region.I have always been able to research and analyse information and make recommendations based on relevant research. I take pride in my ability to delegate task and functions to different users. As the Senior Economic Development Officer AANSW I lead the NSW Economic Development team from 2010 – 2012. Under my leadership the NSW EDO team achieved significantly greater than the target outcomes for Aboriginal business established and business assisted across NSW.

Think and Solve problems

During my employment in the commonwealth government from 1983 – 1996 I managed the Training for Aboriginal Program (TAP). My ability to analyse information and make recommendations based on relevant evidence has been developed from natural aptitude and experience gained throughout my career. The nature of the positions that I have worked over this time such as Aboriginal Training Coordinator and the TAP Programs manager require ongoing monitoring of situations that require complex analytical and the ability to reach logical conclusions.

I chaired to Illawarra Aboriginal community based working group (AICBWG) in excess of 10 years and this voluntary role requires commitment and obligation to ensure that solutions are found for all barriers which arise during this course of time.

I was deputy chair of the Illawarra Aboriginal Lands council from 2007- 2009 and I chaired most of the monthly general meetings as a matter of course.

Manage and develop people

I have been monitoring the NCAP & AEDO programs for the last 17 years. As part of the monitoring process Annual Formal Monitoring visits are undertaken. During the AFMV performance standards and progress are monitored closely to ensure adherence to conditions of grant and funding agreements. I am a senior officer in the office and I regularly assist supervision of staff. As a team leader I provide regular feedback on performance and take the necessary action if any staff member requires performance management. If required I develop strategies to overcome deficiencies and or to develop strengths.

I am currently the workplace delegate for the PSA and I have a long history of involvement with the union movement, and I have been involved with occupational, work place, health and safety issues throughout my career.
