I was watching TV the other night and an eBay commercial came on, but not what you would usually expect. They showed several home videos of

little kids having complete meltdowns of excitement on Christmas morning. They were asking people to go online and upload their Christmas outbursts. We’ve all witnessed those moments when Santa brings the little one exactly what he/she asked for and they proceed to use all of their energy to express their excitement. I’ve seen the screaming, dancing, jumping, but my favorite has got to be when my son was around four. He got the toy he really wanted from Santa and just fell to the floor flailing his arms and legs as if he was having a temper tantrum but he was just so excited he didn’t know what else to do. Looking back on my childhood I can remember several occasions where I begged Santa for the things on my wish list and later opened them on Christmas morning. At the time, it seemed like nothing else mattered. That is, until you grow up. At some point that excitement and rush of ripping apart the paper to see what is underneath begins fading. What fades even more is how we express our excitement. You begin to mentally define gifts as thoughtful, expensive, or other terms that don’t matter at age four. For many adults, that rush doesn’t come when receiving, but rather giving. As an adult, who really looks forward to writing out a wish list for the in-laws who keep persisting you make one? It always feels like such a dreadful task that I usually avoid doing it at all. However, as parents, it’s exciting to write out that list for the kids. You start imagining how your daughter will react when she gets her new dollhouse or kitchen set, or how your son will respond to his new remote controlled flying airplane. It’s a thrill to plan, and then such a fulfilling experience to watch them tear through the presents that morning with pure joy on their faces.Candy Jackson can understand the “feel good” that comes with altruism. Candy Jackson is the President of the Brandon Service League, a volunteer service organization founded on the principle of community service. Its mission is to enhance the lives of others in the Brandon, Bloomingdale, Limona, Lithia, Riverview, Seffner and Valrico areas. Members work in a variety of interest areas including the arts, conservation, education, home life, international and public affairs. This month Focus did an in-depth interview with Candy. scott King enjoys hosting art shows that allow others with his same passion to exhibit their work in fun and lively

settings.

A recent Halloween themed show, held at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico, featured the work of eight area artists and included paintings and one-of-a-kind creations. Guests were fascinated by a wooden checkers set with demon faces for the red pieces and skulls as the black pieces. Dick Patterson, faculty member of International Academy of Design and Technology, displayed original musical instruments, including a shovel guitar and a single string instrument crafted from a yardstick and a cigar box.

Even the refreshments were themed. Guests noshed on “assorted snack scabs and pus dip” (obviously not to be taken literally), along with “zombie toes, vomit cups, and Witches’ Brew, for guests 21 and older.

King, 39, “began drawing recognizable objects at age four” and adds, “It’s been my life ever since. He believes he inherited his gift is from his “incredibly creative grandparents.” He attended Bloomingdale High School in its opening year, but moved to a Wayne County, Ohio “horse and buggy” village of 500 people where he worked alongside his father to design

woodcraft patterns the Amish would then build and sell. When he returned to Florida, he earned a degree in graphic design from the International Academy of Design and Technology.

King describes his own work today as “low brow.” Other descriptors for low brow art include “the underground visual art movement,” “pop surrealism,“ and “fine art influenced by the underground.”

While the youth culture is a main market, folks of all ages appreciate his animated drawings, cartoons, and sketches.

King’s shows are unique in that exhibiting artists pay no entry fee. They simply must “display their work and help guests have fun at the event.” He said, “I started doing art shows in 2001. Although the organizational process can be aggravating, the shows are a lot of fun. Every time I do one, I try to do it bigger and better.”

Photographer Phil Peplinski, who also demonstrates fire eating under the name Blisterlips, complimented King for his efforts to promote local artists: “It’s great working with people like Scott. His art shows bring some really great local talent into the spotlight and into the community where it belongs. Exhibitor Tony Cartegena, a painter, web designer, and videographer, describes the

creative process as “hard work,” but admits, “I like it.” Dick Patterson, artist and IADT instructor, describes his former student King as “easy to work with and a humble guy with a lot of talent.”

Along with 50 other artisans, King will exhibit next at the Delaney Creek Park Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 10 at 320 South Lakewood Drive.

His next show at the McCabe Theater is Valentine themed. Take your sweetheart from 7-11 p.m. to 505 5th Street in Valrico.

Admission is $10 and features artists Scott King, Tom Mueller, and Dick Patterson. Also exhibiting will be Warren Gibson, Holly Strickland, photographer Kevin Nuemann, figurine crafter Carlton Jones, and award-winning artist Ruth Soucek. A mystery host will present the live stage acts of DJ Manny Torres, The Return of the Amazing Blisterlips, and dancer/choreographer Teala Longoria.

Brandon Academy, established in 1970, is the oldest independent school in Brandon, Florida, with students

ranging from PreK3 through the 8th grade. Recently awarded the US Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award for its academic achievements, the school attracts a diverse population, including children from every religion, culture and ethnicity living in the region.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Daina Weiss, 6th and 7th grade Brandon Academy students have been attending Seacamp on Newfound Harbor on Big Pine Key, Florida since 2000. This year, 22 students attended the four day program from Tuesday, October 26 through Friday, October 29, 2010. They included 6th graders Andres Gonzalez, Alix Sobh, Mason Foret, Kelton Tanner, Jonathan Christan, Dennis Delic, Avi Gonzalez, Ahna Butler, Sabrina Priestly, Katie Troke and Olivia Murray; as well as 7th graders Zack Kazbor, Kyle Crescini, Alex Seward, Adrian Frasier, Sarah Gimbel, Sarah Nunn, Ashley Dutton, Jordan Weinstein, Dillon Rudolph, Robert Hernandez, and Conor Calahan.

Seacamp Association, Inc. is a private,

non-profit organization established in 1966 dedicated to marine science education. Their mission is to create awareness of the complex and fragile marine world and to foster critical thinking and informed decision making about man’s use of natural resources. Seacamp is one of the few organizations in the United States providing experiential education in marine studies to middle school students. To date, more than 200,000 students have participated in sessions at Seacamp.

Located on Newfound Harbor on Big Pine Key, Florida, Seacamp offers boys and girls an opportunity to explore some of the most exciting waters in the Florida Keys, both in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Students study coral reefs, sandy and grassy areas, mud flats and natural tide pools, all of them rich in sea plants and animals basic to the study of marine science. All of these programs are taught by degree-holding biologists, geologists and oceanographers.

During the four day program Brandon Academy students, parents, and teachers were able to discover for themselves the fascinating, little-known world beneath the

ocean surface and the delicate relationships which unite all marine organisms in endless cycles of life and survival. The students learned basic ecological principles and concepts that are pertinent to the future of our natural resources as well as the study of marine science. Some of the concepts discussed throughout the four day program included:

General Marine Sciences: students engaged in a general survey of all phases of marine science, giving BA students with little background knowledge the basics of marine life.

Marine Communities: students participated in in-depth discussions about animals and plants as they relate to each other on a community level. The students learned the different areas and the type of life supported there. These areas were also studied on a microscopic community level which opened up a whole new world not seen by the naked eye.

Animal Behavior: students studied the habits and behavior patterns of local marine animals, such as color changes in fishes, feeding habits, schooling, day and night behavior, relationships between organisms, reproduction, and symbiosis.

Marine Invertebrates: students learned about animals without backbones which inhabit the tidal flats, offshore coral heads, and the variety of other habitats around Seacamp. Because the tropical marine environment is well known for its amazing diversity of invertebrate types, students had the

opportunity of studying sponges, starfish, corals, sea fans, crabs and numerous others.

Marine Botany: students went out on field studies of marine and terrestrial botanical areas, including the pine thatch, hardwood hammock, and mangrove community. Marine plants and algae were observed, collected, identified, and pressed.

Marine Vertebrates: students also performed a survey of marine animals with backbones, encompassing not only fish but birds and sea mammals as well.

Marine Geology: students heard all about the formation of the Florida Keys, studies of ancient reefs, rock formation, tidal areas, living coral reefs, sediment transportation and water tables.

Man And The Sea: students discussed the principles of pollution and ecological imbalances put forth by man and their effects on the world’s oceans.

Marine Aquaria: students were introduced to the basic operations of saltwater aquaria. Topics ranged from set-up and maintenance of the tank to collecting techniques for fish and invertebrates.

Thanks to Mrs. Weiss for overseeing the project and putting the trip together, the Brandon Academy students and parents really enjoyed Seacamp. They not only learned a great deal about Florida’s marine life and ecological marvels, but also had a great time.

The Greater Brandon Arts Council hosted its highly regarded 7th Annual Brush Strokes Awards event Thursday,

October 28 at Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association.

At the only comprehensive awards representation of the arts throughout Tampa Bay, the room was filled to capacity. Recipients in 13 categories and guests enjoyed an evening to remember at the 2010 awards ceremony.

Attendees mingled with those to be recognized for artistic achievements as a Bloomingdale High School string ensemble entertained in the background. Fine appetizers awaited guests who strolled the displays presented by past and present recipients.

Awards originator Cheryl S. Kuck, chairperson for the Greater Brandon Arts Council, presented the 2009 winners in each category. In turn, those introduced and presented the 2010 honorees. A complete list appears below.

All winners expressed appreciation for their inspiration. Greg Manley of Armwood High School, 2010 Arts Educator of the Year said, “I wouldn’t be here if not for my fan support. I’ve had great teachers.”

Heather Ochalek, CEO of Music Showcase, who received the Development of the Arts in the Community award said, “I’m honored to be here more than anything. I can’t begin to tell you.”

Ruth Carmichael Ellinger, president of Brandon Christian Writers (local chapter of American Christian Writers) was designated Artist of the Year. Her pastor/husband, Wright Ellinger (Brandon Church of God) accompanied her to the ceremony. Her Wild Rose historical fiction trilogy has garnered a following in Florida, Ohio and Virginia. The recently published “Sword of the Wild Rose” (www.ruthellinger.com) concludes the story based on her grandmother’s life. Ellinger offered this advice for aspiring writers. “Join a writer’s group. Attend a writing conference. Get as much instruction and teaching as you can get.” (For upcoming BCW meeting info, visit BrandonChristianWriters.blogspot.com).

In fact, it was at the recent Florida Inspirational Writers Retreat that Cheryl Kuch informed Ellinger she’d been selected as 2010 Artist of the Year. Ellinger’s first response was, “But I’m not an artist.” Kuck, however, quickly countered: “Yes, you are an artist, one who holds a pen, and the first ever to receive this award.”

The GFWC Brandon Service League will be host its 18th Annual Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, December

4th from 10 am to 2 pm. The tour features three exquisitely decorated, privately owned homes in the Brandon/Valrico area. Visitors are guided through each home by Service League members who share interesting family stories and historical facts about homes and items on display.

Proceeds from the event are donated to local community service organizations. “The home tour has become a tradition for many families each year,” said League President, Candy Jackson, “not only is the price a great value for a memorable holiday experience; but you are donating to a very worthy cause as well.”

Only 600 tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis, with no limit to the number an individual may purchase. Holiday home tour tickets are $15 each and available from any league member or by contacting Melinda White at 813-967-

1925. Ticket price includes refreshments and entrance to all three homes. If available, tickets will also be available for purchase the day of the tour at each home.

FOCUS: Tell us a little about yourself, Candy. Candy Jackson: I was born in Shreveport, LA and spent my early years in Arkansas. I’ve been married to Mike for 30 years. We have two sons…John, 28, married to Tiffany and living in Hermosa Beach, CA, and Jeffrey, 26, married to Andrea and living in Valrico, FL. My husband Mike has worked as a district manager in pharmaceutical sales for the past 32 years. We were transferred here to the Brandon area in 1982. Q. Have you always worked with non-prof it organizations?

A. My education/professional background was in bookkeeping, and I worked for several public and private businesses.

Q. How did you become involved with the Brandon Service League organization?

A. While attending the Holiday Home Tour, I ran into several BSL women who were members of our church. Their enthusiasm for BSL and for the Holiday Home Tour was infectious, so when they invited me to join, I jumped at the chance. And it has added so much joy to my life, has provided me with new friends, and has served as a vehicle whereby I can give back to my community.

Q. Would you give us an overview of the organization?

A. Brandon Service League is a part of a national organization known as the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. GFWC was founded in 1890. Our local chapter was started in 1960, so this year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Interestingly, we have two 50-year members who are still active in our club, and we recently recognized 15 of our living past presidents, many who are still active members of our club today.

GFWC Brandon Service League volunteers interact through activities such as the Holiday Home Tour and our Spring Country Jamboree. From these we are able to provide f inancial support to the following organizations:

In addition, BSL members are active workers in community projects. Several times during the year, you may see BSL members working along the scenic Brandon Parkway, as we cleanup our adopted roadway for citizens and visitors.

Another program is the “Alice Storms Very Special Arts Program” where we provide a fun day for Hillsborough County school children with special needs. Also, we built and maintain a butterfly garden at the New Horizon Group Home. And in March of each year, we partner with Center Place to sponsor the Youth in Art Show, a juried art exhibit that features our talented young artist from area high schools.

In October, BSL members participated in the “Cards for the Troops” program at the Campo YMCA. We, and others, created more than 3200 decorative Christmas cards that would be provided to the troops for them to send to their families. It was a chance to show our support for the military.

Q. Tell us about the wonderful recognition BSL has just received.

A. Our organization was recently awarded the “Arts Activist of the Year” award from

the Greater Brandon Arts Council at the 7th Annual Brush Strokes Awards ceremony.

Q. How do you spend your time when you’re not working?

A. Along with other volunteer activities, I enjoy reading, decorating, traveling, and activities with my church choir. I also enjoy working with a friend in her home decorating business.

A. I enjoy the camaraderie of this group of interesting and talented women who are committed to community service and to the support of each other.

Q. What do you enjoy most about the community?

A. Although it has certainly grown over the years, Brandon still has that small town feeling where people are quick to respond to the needs of the community. It has been a great place to raise my family and to call “home”.

Q. Why would you encourage others to become involved?

A. While there are many wonderful service organizations, BSL provides an excellent opportunity to serve and to make life-long friends with other women with the

same and varied interests. We welcome prospective members and invite you to attend our meetings and/or reach out to one of our members for more information.

Q. Can you describe several recent activities of BSL volunteers?

A. Yes, in September f ive members, led by chairwoman Sara Pancer, participated in the Great American Cleanup Day by collecting six bags of litter from the Brandon Parkway, which is the road we’ve adopted in the Adopt-A-Road program. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and even worked up a sweat - bye-bye calories. Being part

of nature and giving back to the earth is an incredible feeling.

the election is over…

It’s 3:30 AM. The 2010 midterm election is winding down. My brain is on overload with results, more questions to ask our

TV analysts, more screens to read, more interpretation about what this all means.

Simple! We have survived another election cycle. The process that separates us from the rest of the world has succeeded again. Of

course, not all our favorites won. California dumb founds us by electing Jerry Brown for a third term as Governor. Wasn’t he basically a hippy left-winger when he was first elected? I heard him on Fox a couple of weeks ago and he almost sounded like a fiscal conservative. Then they turned down legalizing marijuana and voted to prevent governments from raising any taxes without voter approval.

In our own state Rick Scott surprised me by becoming Governor. It has nothing to do with qualifications or his past or his direction in the future or Alex Sink, it just surprised me.

And here’s the tough part for me personally. I really liked all of these candidates. Sink, Rubio, Crist, Meek, Dan Gelber, Bondi.

What’s not to like about them.When you get a chance to sit next to them or chase them around on a bus tour or met their families you begin to understand they are just like us. They have dreams and aspirations and they want what’s best for all of us. People are essentially good and I tend to see that goodness sometimes to my own detriment. So we disagree. That’s not the end of the world.

But these folks who you may chose to call politicians our outsiders all put themselves at tremendous risk. No, nobody is going to shot them, or at least you pray their lives are not in danger. But getting out there and opening up your soul and your passion to public scrutiny carries the risk you may be hurt emotionally or even financially. Yep! It takes money to run campaigns and plenty of dog catchers and mosquito control and fire districts candidates dug deep into their own pockets to fund their campaigns. We are not all Rick Scotts or Jeff Greens.

What you didn’t see was all the meetings and the debates and rallies were only a handful of people showed up. You didn’t hear them talking late into the night with their own campaign folks, neighbors likes you and me, folks in churches and synagogues, shaking hands at grocery stores, passing out their own fliers, licking the envelopes, and doing those stupid TV interviews that last all of 30 seconds with barely 15 of that making air.

People that run for office and lose are just as important to the fabric of what makes America as the ones who get all the glory. Without the losers we wouldn’t have the exchange of ideas we need to keep this country great. I worry when elected officials aren’t challenged with someone with a different view point. Being forced to explain why you believe something is the best way to measure the value of your thoughts.

And for the folks who hold their noses or refuse to vote because they say they don’t like the choices I have some words of advice. If you don’t like it, run yourself. Your ideas do us non good if you aren’t willing to take part in the process. There are enough people standing on the sidelines thumbing their noses to fill a hundred Tampa Stadiums. Well, go ahead and fill the stadium where you can’t hurt anyone except yourself. Scream into the darkness and see if the darkness answers back.

Welcome home to Copper Bell Café, where the homemade food is cooked with skill that Grandma could only dream about.

FOCUS visited with Darren S. Denington, owner of the café, and Chef Bo. What we found were passionate culinary experts excited to show what they’ve brought to Brandon restaurant scene.

The restaurant serves platters, soups, salads, and sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, seven days a week. Darren is very proud of the café that has been re-opened for about a year. “We came in and put our look and feel into it. We put a high emphasis on food quality,” he said.

The restaurant makes just about everything from scratch under the skillful eye of Chef Bo, who came from Germany to put his heart into the Copper Bell Café. “Restaurants are all I’ve ever done. My dad is a chef. I love cooking. I love to watch my dad cook. I love fresh food - no frozen, no fried. When I first came here [to America] there were eight friers and ten microwaves.

There are no friers here.”

No friers at the Copper Bell Café, but it tastes every bit as good as fried food. As 1st Place winners of the famed Taste of Brandon Award for 2010, we were excited to see why they won.

We were served the soup of the day, Cream of Mushroom & Bacon Soup with pita bread on the side. My first thought on dipping the bread into the soup and eating it: “Bam.” Thick, tender mushrooms and warm, rich soup that was the perfect consistency (doesn’t roll off the spoon). It was confirmed - Bo, in his German accent, was being serious when he talked about freshness and everything being from scratch.

We tried the omelet with bacon, feta cheese, and mushrooms. It must have been at least three eggs, maybe more, because it was an inch tall and fresh. The home fries served with it were slammed with flavor - seasoned, peppered, and baked with light oil drizzled over them.

Darren served us the Beef on Weck Sandwich, “Slow cooked top round steak served au jus on a traditional Kummelweck Roll with a side of horseradish sauce,” as the menu said. The meat was fresh and sliced thin. The homemade horseradish was just a little spicy and was good for dipping. It also came with a large pickle spear.

I also tried the Roasted Turkey & Stuffing sandwich, which the menu described as “Fresh oven roasted turkey and traditional stuffing, with our special cranberry mayonnaise on a baguette with homemade turkey gravy.” The cranberry mayonaisse was unique and complimented the sandwich nicely. The stuffing is also made in the restaurant, which is blatantly obvious because of its freshness. The best thing about this sandwich is just savoring how it all comes together. This wins out over the Thanksgiving leftovers in the fridge.

The menu is simple and has a lot of the favorites most people like. Other sandwiches include: Classic Rueben, BBQ Pulled Pork, Smothered Chicken, French Dip. “Delicious Wraps” include Roast chicken Ceasar Wrap, Turkey Club Wrap, and a Veggie wrap. “Sunday Brunch is very popular for us,” said Darren. “We come up with five different entrees that aren’t on the menu. It’s always rotating,” he said.

The Copper Bell Café does catering as well. “We came up with a practical, simple catering menu that is incredibly affordable, without sacrficing food quality,” said Darren.

The café is cozy and welcoming on the inside- a nice break for those on lunch who want to appreciate a real gourmet treat to soften up the day. The restaurant is family-run and everyone is there to make your experience a great one.
