ACLOSERLOOK:FocusandtheC-segment
The C-segmentPreparing for the arrival of the all-new Focus involves understanding all that this vehicle has to offer customers in the C-segment. But what exactly is the C-segment and why is it so important? According to Ford forecasters, global small car sales — B- and C-segments combined — will increase to 38 million by 2012. To put this into perspective, this year one out of every four vehicles sold globally falls within the C-segment. Withinfiveyears,theB-andC-segmentscouldreach25percentoftheU.S.market.This is a golden opportunity for Ford, and the all-new Focus is positioned to appeal to this growing customer segment. Ford has never been more ready to compete.
The Ford Car LineupWith the launch of the 2011 Fiesta, the all-new Focus no longer fits into the “entry level” position in the Ford car lineup. The Ford showroom is evolving and growing, and each of the models has a distinct place, appealing to differentbuyerneeds.DemandforC-segmentvehiclesiscoming,inpart,fromatrendcalled“rightsizing.”Thismeans customers more conscious of fuel prices, their carbon footprints and their individual vehicle needs are likely to choose vehicles in this segment.It’simportanttonotecustomersdownsizecars—notexpectations.Thosestereotypingsmallcarsas“basictransportation” are in for a surprise. The all-new 2012 Focus will offer an array of features and technologies previously unavailable in this segment.
ACLOSERLOOK:2012FocusComparedto2011Focus
Focus loyalists coming into the showroom to see the all-new 2012 Focus will find a whole new vehicle. While the first-generation Focus inspired design elements such as the daylight opening (DLO), which is the window line that can be seen from the side, this Focus is quite different. The 2011 model is known for being fuel-efficient and fun to drive with European-inspired ride and handling. The next-generation Focus builds on this strong foundation — adding more performance-enhancing features along with cool technology and so much more. These premium features offered on the 2012 model elevate Focus from an economical starter vehicle to one that more-discerning buyers would love to own.

What Smart Regen Charging Is• Anall-newfeatureonthe2.0
I-4 engine that helps improve fuel efficiency
• Aregenerativeelectricalcharging system that optimally charges the battery instead of having the alternator charging the battery anytime the engine is running
How It Works• SmartRegenChargingincreasesalternator
output when the vehicle is braking or decelerating, converting the moving (kinetic) energy into electric energy– Since there is no additional engine accessory beltloadtoenergizethebattery, lessfuelisused by the engine
– The captured energy is used to charge the battery and maintain optimum operating levels of the electrical system
• TheSmartRegenChargingsystemincreasesalternator output when the Powertrain Control Module indicates the engine efficiency is high

MAKETHEPOINT: PowerShift6-speedAutomaticTransmission
The PowerShift automatic transmission has some specific operational characteristics that are different from a conventional automatic transmission. During the initial break-in period, the transmission may exhibit “quick shifts” or harsher than normal shifting. The transmission may also lightly “shudder” under light acceleration or during a coast down to a stoplight. Assure the customer these characteristics are not abnormal during the clutch break-in period and will certainly diminish once enough mileage accumulates.

When conducting a test-drive with a Focus SE with SE Sport Package, Focus SEL or Titanium, be sure to show the customer how the SelectShift capability operates, providing the performance of a manual transmission without the fuss of operating a clutch. Point out how the PowerShift automatic transmission works in harmony with the 2.0L I-4 engine. Also take the time to show the customer how the display in the instrument cluster indicates the gear selection. And don’t forget to demonstrate the SelectShift switch on the transmission shifter handle. SelectShift is a performance feature the Focus enthusiast customer is sure to appreciate.

One of the keys to outstanding safety protection with Focus is the side curtain airbags. These airbags are concealed in the headliner and employ roll-fold technology to help ensure proper deployment during certain side-impact collisions and rollovers. You can demonstrate how this safety feature functions using a simple “blow-out” or “roll horn” party favor since it uses the same basic principles as the roll-fold technology.Give it a try:•Inserttherollhornintoyourmouthandinflateit•Airpressureentersthehornandflowsouttounfold andinflate(orpressurize)therolledendofthehorn
•Considertiltingyourheaddownwhileinflatingthe horn to demonstrate the downward deployment of the airbag along the side of the window
•Explaintothecustomerbeforeorafteryouinflate the horn — sensors inflate the side curtain airbags in a fraction of a second — what they’re seeing happens faster than the eye can see
•Whiletheunfoldingandinflatingprocessisnearlyimpossible to see with the naked eye, the rolled party favor works much the same way

IIHSTestsFocus was named a “Top Safety Pick” and received the highest possible rating in each of the following tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Frontal Offset Test — vehicle impacts a fixed barrier at 40 mph. Only 40 percent of the vehicle’s front surface makes contact with the barrier.Side-impact Test — a 3300-lb. barrier moving at 31 mph strikes the side of a stationary vehicle.Roof Strength Test — a metal plate is pushed against the corner of the vehicle roof at constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5" of crush is measured, and then compared to the vehicle weight to determine a strength-to-weight ratio.Rear-impact Test — the vehicle’s front seat is mounted on a platform which is accelerated forward. This simulates the stationary vehicle being hit from behind and tests for whiplash injury.

• Morestringentfrontalandsidecrashtestsandmeasuring methods resulted in lower crash ratings for all vehicles from all manufacturers, even if the vehicle earned top crash test scores in the older 2010 model year ratings – NHTSA rollover testing methods are unchanged,
so the ratings from previous testing remain unchanged
• Once 2012 model year ratings are published, it’s important to remember vehicles with lower star ratings are just as safe as earlier model years — the vehicles are not changing; the way the crash testing is conducted and measured is what changed
• FrontalandsidecrashtestratingslocatedintheGovernment Safety Ratings portion of the window sticker will read “NOT RATED” until NHTSA tests the 2012 Focus
What You Need To Do• ConfidentlycommunicatetothecustomerthatFord
vehicle safety has not lessened or changed — Ford vehicles are just as safe as they were prior to the changes in NHTSA testing
NotE: Stay tuned to www.safercar.gov for the latest Star Ratings(1) for 2012 model year vehicles.

Trailer TowingNot recommended
Flat/Neutral TowingEmergency Towing It is recommended that Focus be towed with
a front-wheel lift or with flatbed equipment.Recreational Towing Focus, equipped with either the manual or
automatic transmission, offers indefinite neutral (flat-tow) towing capability up to a maximum recommended speed of 70 mph. Front-wheel dollies or a flatbed trailer may also be used for recreational towing.
Automatic Transmission Neutral Tow Operation
•IgnitionmustbeplacedinONpositionandthen the vehicle transmission placed in the Neutral position
•Thisprocessensuresthetransmissionsynchros and shift drums are in proper placement for neutral towing at the 70 mph maximum recommendation
•IgnitioncanbeplacedinOFFpositionAFTER transmission is placed in Neutral
•Adeadbattery, orplacingthevehicleinNeutral without properly cycling the ignition to the ON position first, limits the neutral tow capability to 35 mph and 50 miles
NOTE: Remind customers the vehicle must be placed in Neutral prior to neutral towing and that the Owner Guide is the best reference for complete neutral towing details.
