Thanks to the VR mode, it is possible to shoot

SATISFIED WITH WHAT YOU ARE GETTINGOUT FROM YOUR COOLPIX P5000?
Do you notice that though both shots are taken from
the same spot, the shot taken with WC-E67 covers
more area as compare to the shot taken with the
camera without the WC-E67.
WC-E67 - List Price S$183.67
I am sure you are getting the best out of the 10 Megapixels
resolution, 3.5x Zoom and full range of exposure modes.
However if you wish to push the limits of the Optical
performance of your COOLPIX P5000, Nikon is proud to
introduce the various sidekicks that boost the Optical
performance of COOLPIX P5000 from microscopic to
super telephoto.
WIDE ANGLE TELECONVERTER WC-E67
At Wide Angle, the COOLPIX P5000 produced a focal
length of 36mm. It may not be wide enough for interior
shooting or group shooting especially in constrain area.
With Wide Angle Teleconverter, WC-E67 coupled
with UR-E20, it is able to convert COOLPIX P5000
into a wide angle camera with a focal length
of 24mm.

With the 3 x Teleconverter TC-E3ED fitted to
COOLPIX P5000 via UR-E20, it effectively converts
COOLPIX P5000’s focal length to 378mm.
Do you notice that the PSA signboard is
effectively zoomed in 3x the original, thanks to
the TC-E3ED Teleconverter Lens.
SUPER TELEPHOTO FIELDSCOPE USING FSB-6
If you still feels that a focal length of 378mm
obtained from TC-E3ED(3x Zoom) mounted on
COOLPIX P5000 is still up to your mark, how
about getting up to 9,450mm from your COOLPIX

COMING UP NEXT...Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shall share with you histips on shooting portraits. He shall talk about the appropriate subjectmatter, background and the execution of the technique. Look outfor it.
In this seventh part ofa series of techniques,Steven Yee shall sharewith you tips on howt o m a k e u s e o fbacklighting to createinteresting images. Atravel photographer
and photography instructor, Steven Yee conducts the NikonD40/D40X/D50, D70/D70s and D80 workshop monthly atKnowledge Bowl. More of his works can be found onwww.stevenyeephotography.com and www.discovernikon.com
There is a reason why many photographers chooseto shoot only during certain hours which ispopularly known as the golden light period. Thisperiod is usually in the early sunny morning andlate sunny afternoon when the quality of light isgood and not harsh. At the same time, one willalso have many opportunities to experience alighting phenomena call “Backlight”.
Backl ight ing is a technique which manyphotographers like to adopt for their shots, be itfor portraits, floral shots, still life etc. It is not hardto find many award winning shots which haveelements of backlighting and this is why manyserious photographers would grab ever yopportunity to take pictures on an early sunnymorning or late afternoon. They can also makeuse of the studio strobe lights in a studio to createthe backlighting ef fect. However, outdoorbacklighting is beyond the control of thephotographers as they cannot control the lightingfrom the sun. A cloudy day will certainly spoil theday.
No special lenses are needed to capture the
backlighting effect. The Coolpix with its Programmode is able to do the job well outdoor. But ofcourse, the Digital SLRs provide the photographerswith more options to play with, such as the higherrange of ISO and wider range of aperture amongstothers.
One main problem would probably be camerashake due to shutter speed slower than 1/(focallength). In this case, you may have to considerusing a higher ISO and a bigger aperture to getyou a faster shutter speed to minimize camerashake.
The below shall serve as a useful guide to aidyou.
The ingredients for getting good shots withbacklighting:
☛ The best time to get good backlighting will be early morning or late evening on a sunnyand non cloudy day. The quality of light isat its optimum during this period known asthe golden light period.
☛ It is important to have a prominent mainsubject. Every picture should have a mainsubject and you can execute the backlightingtechnique on the subject.
☛ Choose a darker background so that thebacklight effect on the subject can stand out.Use a lens hood to help minimize lens flare.
No doubt these simple tips look so simple; it canbe a challenge to spot the main subject and the

angle with which to execute the backlighting. It isgood to look at more pictures where this techniqueis executed and analyze how the photographerschoose their main subject and angle.
3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f3.5We were in Chiangrai, Thailand when our minibus passed by this dirt track. The lighting was exceptionally good and the dirt track proved to be a good placefor some backlighting shot. We waited for a while and set our camera settings. ISO 100 was sufficient to result in a fast shutter speed of 1/125s with the P mode.We were rewarded by 2 cyclists. However, they cycled too fast. One boy was trying to catch up with them but gave up. We took our aim and fired away whenhe got into our view. The "rim light" effect around the boy's body outline is characteristic of backlighting.
With the above in mind, you can use this techniqueand begin your quest for the backlit shot.
PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
Centre Weighted metering, ISO250, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f4.5A walk in the market place in Xinjiang saw this fruit seller selling his load of grapes. He raised a bunch of grapes and posed for this picture. It was late morningand the lighting began to appear a little harsher. The backlighting "illuminates" the grapes hence rendering it a fresh green colour. I decided to use ISO 250despite the bright lighting condition as I needed as faster shutter speed to shoot in the shade where the lighting can be low at times. Candid shots do not givesecond chance if you missed it. Though he posed for me but it is always good to capture the very first moments when he first posed as the expression willbe more natural.
Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f7.1The isolated leaves were spotted on a branch and they were "illuminated" by the backlighting. Centre weighted was used as the exposure was based on the leaveswhich happened to be in the centre region of the frame. A slightly smaller aperture of f7.1 was used as I wanted the trunk and branches to be relatively sharp.I did not bring my tripod, hence a higher ISO 320 helped to result in a faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake.
Center weighted metering, DaylightWhite Balance, ISO400, Program Mode,Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f3.5
It was a very cold morning when this shotwas taken. We were seeking shelter in atea house where the waitress was clearingthe table. She breathed hard and thecondensation of her breath washighlighted by the strong morning light. Her body outline was clearly defined bythe light. ISO400 was used to ensure afast enough shutter speed to freeze theaction and minimize camera shake.

The classic "rim light" effect of thebacklighting was exhibited here when thebacklight shone on this monk. The lightingwas strong hence an ISO 125 is goodenough to result in a faster shutter speedto minimize camera shake. A telephotolens and big aperture of f3.5 were usedto render the background blur due to asmaller depth of field. I shot many picturesof this angle so that I have more choicesto choose from.
Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/90s, Aperture f4.5This model has very nice dyed thick hair. We posed her at the doorway where the morning light shone into the corridor. Her hair glowed beautifully. A reflectorwas placed a distance away from her face to avoid harsh direct reflection. This resulted in her face appearing to be naturally lit. We avoided having a flash firedon her face or a reflector put close to her as these will result in a harsh light which may look unnatural.
Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/750s, Aperture f3.5We were waiting for our tour bus and there was this thick growth of lalang next to us. The backlight highlighted the lalang and they looked like dancing flamesin the bushes as the gust of wind swept past. The lighting was very strong and a fast shutter speed of 1/750s froze the lalang. Some digital enhancement wasmade with the "shadow/highlight" feature of the Adobe Photoshop to bring out the details of the background.
Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f4Obviously a bad hair day for this monkey at the zoo. Its hair was standing and it was scratching itself. The backlight highlighted its standing hair. ISO 100 wasgood enough to result in a fast shutter speed as the lighting was strong.

The setting sun emitted a nice glow of golden light which shone on the dancers.Aperture f2.8 was used to throw the background out of focus and a higher ISO 320 was used to result in a faster shutter speed to capture them. There was nosecond chance as the dancers walked away quickly. I hardly had time to compose the picture as they were rushing away. In such cases, I would shoot as manypictures as possible and choose the better pictures later, given this nice setting and beautiful subjects.
Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/400s, Aperture f5.6This specie of orchid had its edge highlighted by the backlighting. I chose an angle where the background was dark green (dark green trees) so that the"rim effect" was obvious. It was a sunny morning and I was using a telephoto lens. ISO 200 was used and the focal length was 300mm. The shutter speed of1/400s was fast enough to minimize camera shake with the long lens.

Underwater photography is slowly gaining
popularity amongst the diving enthusiasts
who want to capture those moments in a
different world. They serve as historians by
capturing the life deep under in an ever
changing eco landscape that is threatened
by pollution and poaching. Many species of
fishes, corals and other life forms are yet to
be discovered while some become extinct
before they can even be discovered.
Diving has always been one of Margaret
Ang’s favourite past time. Her other hobby
is photography where she learnt the art of
composition and searching for angles.
"Margaret is one of my few students who can
couple their diving skills and photography
skills to bring to us the wonderful world under
the sea", said Steven Yee. She is encouraged
to pursue her specialization in underwater
photography.
She upgraded her DSLR equipment by
purchasing the Nikon D80 body, the 60mm
micro lens, the 10.5mm lens as well as the
underwater casing and accessories. She went
on numerous diving trips with her new
investment ever since. One advice which she
would give is that one needs to know the
objective of each shoot and prepare the right
lens. I t is impossible to change lens
underwater.
For Margaret, this is a case of how 2 hobbies
(diving and photography) can merge to derive
moments of excitement and satisfaction.

PORTFOLIO : LESTER KOH MENG HUA
Lester Koh is relatively new to photography. His first brush with photography started two yearsago with the top selling Nikon D70. He began hisphotographic journey with Nature Photographywhich he explored on his own.
He made the wise decision of directly adoptingthe Digital SLR platform. With digital, Lester foundthe EXIF data and the possibility of immediateimage review a distinct advantage in acceleratinghis photographic learning process. All his winningimages were taken with Nikon D70.
In 2005, he decided to improve his photographicski l l by taking up courses from SAFRAPhotographic Club.
Although he owns a Digital SLR Camera, hedecided to sign up for Basic Film Photographyconducted by Mr. Yip Hoi Kee as he strongly
believes that one still needs to understand thefundamentals of photography in order toexcel. After taking Basic Photography, he venturedfurther with Studio Portrait (by Mr. ChristopherWong) and Nature Photography(by Mr. Low SoonLeong).
Lester cited "I am fortunate to have Mr Yip andMr Low, both distinguished photographers,as my mentors, who always challenge me toproduce something creative and unique.”.
INSPIRATIONBoth Mr Yip Hoi Kee and Mr Low Soon Leong whowere his instructors during his learning in SAFRAPhotographic Club have always encouraged himto pursue an independent approach and visionvis-à-vis photography.
Mr Yip and Mr Low constantly challenge Lester toproduce something unique and different and theirfeedback is invaluable to his learning process. MrBernard Poh, a professional photographer, alsoshared many important aspects of pictorialphotography with him.
Lester, being relatively new to photography, feelsthat there are so many aspects of photography tomaster, so he does not restrict himself to anyparticular subject/style of photography. He doeshave a preference for the abstract genre
PHOTOGRAPHIC ACHIEVEMENTSThough Lester is fairly new to photography, hehas a passion for photography and his passionhad won him several awards namely:
• JAN 20071st Prize, SAFRA Photographer of The Year 2007
• OCT 20063rd Prize, Waterfest
• DEC 2005Best Student, Basic Film Photography SAFRAPC
