Steve Dzerigian “TRAIL OF STONES: My Path in Photography”

Book Launch Exhibition March 7 - 31

STEVE DZERIGIAN began using a camera in his youth, exploring the nearby landscape. Photography became a means for interacting with the world, for discovery and communication; pursuing and teaching the medium became his life’s work. He instructed field workshops for the University of California, Santa Cruz Extension from 1977 through

2007. From 1984 to 1990, he was an assistant instructor and one-time director for The Ansel Adams Gallery Photography Workshop in Yosemite. In 2002, he served as a co-coordinator for the “Ansel Adams Centennial Symposium in Yosemite: Edges and Intersections, The

Evolution of Change.” Devoted to facilitating art and education in Central California for the last forty-five years, Dzerigian has served as a curator, juror, and consultant for many exhibitions, competitions, and media events. In addition, he taught photography full-time at Fresno City College. In 1980, he gathered charter members to create the local Spectrum Art Gallery, one of the longest running, nonprofit cooperative galleries in the United States. In numerous one-person and group exhibitions, as well as publications, Steve Dzerigian’s works have been seen throughout the country.

Tim Hill, head of imprint New York Graphic Society Books and the founder of Contemporary Photographer and Audience magazines says:

“TRAIL OF STONES: My Path in Photography is an extraordinary narrative by a superb photographer. Steve Dzerigian has taught photography for many years, touching the lives of over five thousand students. His is a journey with which any creative person and lover of photography will identify. This unique book is a remarkable combination of exultation, intuition, and struggle in search of the subtle, the profound, the unusual, and the spiritual. Dzerigian has been guided by contemporary life and that of ancient cultures. A split and fallen tree, an alignment of rocks, or a creamy white, pillared basement in Guatemala are all spiritual self-portraits.

Trail of Stones: My Path in Photography is a visual autobiography into the realm of “seeing,” and how an artist not only captures a photograph, but what is going on inside his head.”

Helen Gigliotti “Iran: As I Saw It”April 4 - 28

In April 2018, ten of us traveled to Iran as “goodwill ambassadors of peace, one tourist at a time”. We embarked on this trip with a sense of adventure and with a modicum of anxiety but determined to assess the nature of the Iranian people and their culture, to experience remnants of their past great civilizations and to chronicle the current financial/political pressures bound to affect future decision-making as this great Islamic country struggles with its place in the world.

This ancient country boasts 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites from Persepolis to the capital city of Tehran. These sites consist of ornate mosques, great salt deserts, citadels and bazaars of the Great Silk Road, the Qanat network of water canals, Persian Gardens with underground water channels leading to lavish palaces, and so many more magnificent monuments of the past. The colorful mosaic-tiled buildings with their brilliant calligraphy are stunning to observe and photograph.

Armed with my trusted Canon camera and for my own remembrance, I wandered the streets, villages, markets and monumental structures. The current exhibit of color images captures a small fraction of my many impressions. The brief slide show for Friday Photography Live (April 12, 7 pm) which accompanies this print exhibit expands on these impressions. Please join me for it all!

I am a long-time member of Spectrum Art Gallery and have been photographing “forever”. But only after retirement from teaching (Biochemistry) and administrative duties at Fresno State have I been able to devote time and energy to photography classes, workshops and self-study, especially those encompassing the color digital format. All my RAW images are processed using the tools of Adobe Photoshop and printed in my own studio. I can be reached by email at [email protected]. or through my website at http://www.helengigliotti.com.

Art Serabian ““Insight”April 4 - 28

Art Serabian is a Fresno native whose career spanned 34 years serving public education in a variety of capacities from high school math teacher to central office administrator. While Art has used a film camera most of his adult life, his photography was composed mostly of snap shots with an occasional “artistic” attempt. It wasn’t until he retired that he had time to learn and truly grow as an artist photographer.

Art enjoys photographing a variety of subjects including landscapes, urban scenes, architecture, creative images, and still life. He creates both color and monochrome print images and truly enjoys taking a photographic concept from capture, through digital processing, printing, and finally matting for display.

Exhibitions are a real source of joy for Art because they provide a unique opportunity to connect with visitors and savor their responses. Photography is deeply personal and

Art Serabian - San Simeon Calm

a self-fulfilling proposition for him – it is all about the story the image conveys. Regardless of the path one takes, he feels if an image resonates and speaks to a viewer, that is a good thing - a fringe benefit of his effort.

“Insight” is a collection of images that provide a glimpse into who Art is, and how he views the world. While the prints cover a wide range of subject matter and techniques, it’s felt they have a common theme of style and vision that will engage the viewer, and perhaps take them on a journey that will intersect that of the artist.

Schedule and Procedures

Dennis Krug graciously volunteered to take on Digital Display Coordinator duties from Randy Vaughn-Dotta. Thank you both for your service!

All active Spectrum Gallery members may submit 4 digital image files to be exhibited on the Digital Display frame in the Member’s Space whether or not they are currently exhibiting in the Main Gallery or in the Member’s Space.

The Digital Display is updated 4 times a year as shown in the graphic below. Active members may submit 4 new images every quarter or allow their current images to roll over into the next exhibit at each quarterly deadline.

Please email your 4 digital jpeg image files to Dennis Krug at [email protected] by the submission deadline in the table shown below.

If your images are received by the deadline they will be exhibited. If they arrive late they will be saved for the following quarter.

A Note from the President

Happy New Year to everyone. I hope amidst the turmoil of current events that each of you is able to find the creative fire and make truly wonderful art.

It will be a busy year for SPECTRUM ART GALLERY as we make plans and celebrate our Fortieth Anniversary. Please find a way to participate. Contact any of the board members with any ideas or questions you might have. With everyone’s help it will surely be a wonderful and festive occasion.

On the topic of volunteerism, some of the sitters we have been counting on to keep the gallery open are no longer available, so we need members to step up and help. We also need extra sitters and helpers because the Rogue Festival will be taking place during the month of March. And, by the way, (also during March), I am so looking forward to the solo exhibit that coincides with the book-launch of “Trail of Stones” the long awaited monograph of Steve Dzerigian.

I am reaching out to the membership and asking if anyone has surveillance equipment that they would like to donate to the gallery. Based on situations that have made sitters uncomfortable, even fearful, the board has agreed that having video surveillance would be a good idea.

Our annual Members Meeting will be held on April 7, 2019. Please attend. We will be holding elections for some seats on the Board of Directors. If you are interested, please let us know.

The Board just approved “The Alternative Process Photography Workshop Series”. This is a great opportunity for individuals to learn and participate, so spread the word.

We are always open to suggestions about possible grants and other fundraising opportunities, so if you have ideas or know of anything, please pass on to one of the board members. One possibility for fundraising would be to print Fortieth Anniversary T-shirts. If you have a good idea or design for a T-shirt, please contact me or share with any of the board members.

In closing, I came across these wonderful quotes by Iris Murdock while reading Maria Popova’s Brain Pickings.

Great art is able to display and discuss the central area of our reality, our actual consciousness, in a more exact way than science or even philosophy can.

Great art, then… inspires truthfulness and humility.

Ed Gillum, [email protected]

Curator’s Corner

Unusual weather tends to lend towards amazing photographs – and we’ve had a bunch of strange weather lately! Don’t let the rain discourage you from seeing the world. If nothing else, take up an indoor project, focus on smaller objects or details, and hone those macro skills. Or if you are so inclined, brave the weather and capture some great views in the changing light. The world is full of opportunities to create art; you just need to be there!

While you are out in the world, be sure to stop in to Spectrum Art Gallery for some inspiration and to support your fellow members. In March, we have a treat! Steve Dzerigian brings us a collection of his works to launch his book, “Trail of Stones: My Path in Photography.” These images span a lifetime of works from an extraordinary photographer, and must be seen to truly appreciate the impact of the work. Steve will also be having a discussion and book launch party on Friday, March 22 – you won’t want to miss this!

Showing in April we have Helen Gigliotti, who is presenting “Iran: As I Saw It.” Wandering the streets in Iran, Helen captured many images of the places, people, and the culture in Iran. Helen’s images bring to us a world far different from our own, but so much the same. Be prepared to see the many colors and patterns while you journey to Iran in these detailed images from Helen.

Also showing in April is “Insight” by Art Serabian. This collection of images draw the viewer into the scene, and we are immediately taken on a journey of inspired works that are connected to each other through the mind’s eye of the artist. To tie it all together, be sure to attend the Friday Photography Live on April 12th and meet the artists while they discuss their work.

We have several Traveling Show opportunities coming up this year, so be prepared! We will be exhibiting again at Fresno City Hall, and we will also be showing at the Big Fresno Fair! Due to the success of our last time, we will also be exhibiting at the historic Coke Hallowell Ranch House at the San Joaquin River Center. This show will be for four months! Be sure to respond to the call in the next e-announcements coming up!

If you are flying out of Fresno Yosemite International Airport, be sure to check out the two exhibition spaces from Spectrum Art Gallery at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport! The exhibition changes every four months, and will have an upstairs group show in the “Spectrum Sky Gallery” and a downstairs featured artist in the “Wing Gallery.” We are currently featuring John Moses – Be sure to see what he

Spectrum at Fresno Yosemite International Airport

Last Fall, we were excited to connect with the Fresno Yosemite International Airport and have secured two separate exhibition spaces at that venue. This is a great opportunity to showcase our organization in a public art venue and a fantastic way to get exposure for our members. Over 1.5 million passengers have moved through our airport since 2016 providing many opportunities for the public to view the art work of Spectrum members.

Heading toward the terminal gates, there are lounging areas filled with new furniture and surrounded by visual art. Several exhibition spaces are available, one of which showcases a single member of Spectrum Art Gallery. The “Spectrum Wing Gallery”, as it is named, is placed in a well-lit area where passengers can relax and view the art pieces.

Heading upstairs toward the upper gates, there is a long, curved wall. This wall is titled the “Spectrum Sky Gallery” and will house a rotating theme-based group-showing of Spectrum Art Gallery members. The beautiful skylight and the vaulted ceiling create an amazing space where the works of our members can be viewed and appreciated.

All exhibitions will hang for approximately four months with the first call having been responded to in the last quarter. Stay tuned for calls to be placed in future e-announcements for both theme-based group showings and featured member portfolios for space in the Spectrum Wing Gallery. In each case, a prospectus will provide directions for submitting works for consideration.

Please contact Jesse Merrell at [email protected], should you have any questions.
