Dear NCPP, Let the rains begin! Being originally from Southern California, it still amazes me how much more seasonal weather we receive in Northern California! Our family enjoys getting outside and exploring the local creeks, trails and getting a little wet! The only challenge is photographing in this unpredictable weather, but it can be fun just exploring and getting muddy in the process! October Guest Speaker - Michael Van Auken “Lifestyles of the Almost Famous” Michael shared many of his experiences with us that included building rapport, using props, finding interesting environments and enhancing the mood with controlled lighting. Michael’s presentation was accented with lovely images from his family sessions and commercial work. Techniques used and demonstrated were simple yet showed us how to better make an image and sales process more impactful.

Michael Van Auken has been “recording the history of people’s lives” for more than twenty-five years. MVA is accomplished in the art of photojournalism, portraiture, pictorial photography and is fluent in “Photoshop“. He was also the inaugural President of NCPP in 1998 and served on our board and as a member volunteer for many years. NCPP appreciates his many years of loyalty and service.

Image Competition – We had an exciting night full of 16 amazing image submissions. The race was close but the final congratulations go to…1st Place – Ann Gordon “Mamma's Favorite Girl”, 2nd Place –Tom O'Connor “Rocky Mountain High” and 3rd Place - Karen Drinkwater “Cloudscape”. Super job to these photographic artists who submitted these images! I know each of our members has an award winning image to submit. So bring it on for November’s People’s Choice competition! We look forward to seeing your images soon. NCPP’s New Board Member Team – Our board team has great synergy and enthusiasm. We work tirelessly on current goals to increase future membership and overall value. Our mission statement says it all and we look forward to continue growth within this wonderful organization. We are always looking for ideas and volunteers so don’t be shy! Vendor Night – NCPP proudly presents our annual vendor night in November. This is an extremely fun night with photographic demonstrations and awesome vendors. We hope to make this evening as memorable as possible and looking forward to meeting some new people. We have some great speakers lined up through 2013 so make sure you stay current with Focal Point, NCPP website, NorCal Meetup group and our Facebook page! Warm regards, Kevallyn

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.” Charlie Chaplin

NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Our purpose is to create an environment amongst professional photographers that

will inspire each of us and to help one another grow as business professionals and artists.

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point.

Focal Point November 2012

Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below.

1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal.

2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you

would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi

etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at

least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp.

7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same

way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page.

9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention:

· Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). · Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg

11. More information for download or viewing at.

NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA or re-enter with NCPP, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes you want. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except:

· PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg · Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php

ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES:

· Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to Wednesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link.

E-mail images to mailto:[email protected] Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

1st Place: “Mamma’s Favorite Girl” by Ann Gordon

“Mamma’s Favorite Girl” is a client image I created to make the very most from a sweet little Arabian mare whose general conformation leaves a bit to be desired. She has a beautiful face and wonderful personality. That’s what I wanted to capture for the owner. Bella is the owner’s first horse and the love of her life. The owner specifically wanted a head study and this is our result. I positioned Bella just outside the barn at the head of the aisle under an overhang. I closed the doors on the other end of the barn aisle to control the light and create the dark background. I had an assistant holding a large mirror to grab her attention and get her ears up. The mirror also acts as a reflector in this softly lit spot to bring light into the face. The image is captured at 250 ISO, 70 mm, 3.5 at 1/160 sec. I usually try to work at 90 mm or more to minimize distortion and not shoot slower than 1/250 sec. It just goes to show that in all things you need to be flexible. Ann

2nd place: “Rocky Mountain High” by: Tom O’Connor My wife and I were in the Canadian Rockies recently and went to Moraine Lake in the Yoho National Park, Alberta for a sunset shot. The Canadian Rockies as well as the trees and the water colors in the lakes and rivers are just amazing. We arrived early so we had time to walk the trails to find a good view. I ended up walking to the end of the lake and took several shots. For this image I used my 17mm Tilt Shift lens so I would get a wide angle view and a really sharply focused image. I did most of the processing in Lightroom with only a curves adjustment and sharpening done in Photoshop. Settings were iso100 / f/16 / 1/10sec. Tom

“Boost Your Business on a Budget” Jennifer Bagwell has been a wedding photographer for 5 short years and with each year she has grown her business. In 2012 she shot 35 weddings as the primary photographer, which was 13 more than she did in 2011. She attributes her success to savvy marketing and building a brand based on happy clients, happy guests, and a social media frenzy. Jennifer will discuss the things that she tried along the way that worked and what didn't and how to make marketing investments with a great return. Learn how to create a brand that is talked about, celebrated and yields a fully booked schedule today and future clients for tomorrow. Petaluma based photographer Jennifer Bagwell has used her retail experience to get a leg-up in the photography industry. At Best Buy she worked on a special board that worked hand in hand with the Gallup Organization where they studied the psyches of different customers and their shopping habits along with studying work staff personalities and how to better utilize them to service customers. She was also the head of PR for Best Buy in San Francisco and handled all of their media relations while managing the SF store. Jennifer is a proud stay-at-home mom of two adorable children as well as a full-time photographer.
