Dear NCPP, Hello! As we embark upon summer, schedules seem to get busier and does anyone actually get to just slow down or actually enjoy a bit of R & R? Even with longer days, they just don’t seem to be long enough to fit all the fun activities and at the same time, relax. My favorite parts of summer are the awesome sunsets, wonderful landscapes and social happenings. Hope your summer plans are filled with laughter, fun and adventure…with your camera of course!
April Guest Speaker – Kelly McCathran
Founder of Onlineinstruct.com and Training Evangelist for Roundpeg Inc. Kelly McCathran wowed us with her teaching Adobe applications. She has traveled North America, and abroad, teaching applica-tions to the largest tech firms, print shops and ad agencies in the world. NCPP was truly honored to have such great instruction and information. Kelly kept the pace steady and we all attempted at keeping up with blazing fast note taking! Amazing how many quick shortcuts Adobe offers that we have at our fingertips. I am sure that all of us learned a ton of useful information to say the least.
Print Competition – NCPP is excited to see this competition grow not only in amount of entries but the variety is really inspiring. April winner’s congratulations go to…1st Place – Bill Baker - "Through the Night" and 2nd Place – Tod Gomes - "Swing for the Fences" and 3rd Place - Barbara Brady-Smith - "Golden". Great job to these artists! Make sure to get ready for next month’s print competition and Starbuck’s gift prize to one lucky print comp participant.
PPC Judging Academy – April 30, 2013 presented by Tim Mathiesen, M.Photog.Cr. F-ASP, PPA National Jury Chairman. Tim Mathiesen has put together a workshop for prospective jurors so that we can raise the quality of all competitions around the state. The details of this class are: An all day workshop on the judging process, based on the PPA judging system and a place on the PPC qualified judging list. This workshop is very intense and involves hands on judging and discussion of the many aspects of judging. We are looking forward to planning this event! Please visit our NCPP website for more information. Tim Meyer – Lighting Styling Workshop – Sunday May 19, 2013 presented by Tim Meyer. NCPP would like to invite you to join us for a day full of lighting techniques and posing. Tim will illustrate how your choice of light shaping tools, metering, ratios, facial analysis and posing all work together to produce consistently high quality images. This class will be about light styling - using light to shape and make statements about style - and will provide the opportunity for you to develop a professional level of portrait lighting skills. Although, taught in a studio environment, this class will be valuable to photographers who work in studio and with natural light. Warmly, Kevallyn Paskos
“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
NCPP Mission Statement:
The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Our purpose is to create an environment amongst professional photographers that
will inspire each of us and to help one another grow as business professionals and artists.

Branding + Authenticity Caroline will be sharing her creative process and how photographers can tap in to their true authentic self for creative inspiration and picking a branding to match your style and personality. Artist Caroline Winata flows through life like her lusciously modern clientele.
Wishing to life a mix-and-match of bold, fresh and dreamy-romantic concepts, she captures dreams for clients living their happily ever after’s.
The doors to her northern California studio open to her world where, along with namesake and best puppy friend Milou, you might find Caroline obsessing over design, gorgeous, randomly-discovered light, finding happiness in obscure moments, and traveling the world fashionably and fabulously.
“Olin” (as her friends call her) also loves chunky cocktail rings, dog-friendly beaches, and vibing with friends, especially over sumptuous sashimi. And cupcakes. Never forget the cupcakes.
Caroline appears in dozens of special, happy places, like Martha Stewart, Bride’s Magazine, The Knot, Style me Pretty, Green Wedding Shoes, and PhotoPro Magazine. She was also named one of Rangefinder Magazine’s Top 30 Rising Stars in 2012.
Milou + Olin = was, is, and always will be. In love with photography, and art, and design, and shoes, and life since she was very small, she is at her happiest with her inspiration Milou. For her romance-addicted clients seeking an edge, she always will be. Love always is.
When not obsessed with her photography and all things beautiful, Caroline is also working on her woman-centric non-profit, HelloXOXO.
Honored to be one of Rangefinder Magazine's Top 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography. Founding member of BestWeddingPhotographers, ModernPhotographers, member of AGWPJA and Photographik. 1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal.
2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you
would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi
etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at
least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp.
7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same
way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page.
9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention:
· Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). · Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg
11. More information for download or viewing at.
NOTE: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except:
· PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg
· Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES:

“Through the Night” by Bill Baker
Walking out the front door of a relative's home on the east coast, I looked up at the wintery branches of a tree and immediately saw the type of patterns that attract me. Giving it the layering with branches in and out of focus added to the sense of depth in a way I liked better and of course then the moon becomes a focal point. Some color field was added also. Something about twilight type images interests me a lot. There is a sense of mystery in the twilight.

3rd place: “Golden” I had in mind a certain image I wanted to capture. I wanted to photograph my golden retrievers during the golden hour, with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background and with lovely golden light in the sky - hence the name "Golden." The dogs were on leash and tied to a rock; those leashes were removed in post. An assistant was to my left keeping my off camera flash in a Doug Box Modifier from blowing away and also got the dogs to look her way. This was taken with my Nikon D800, 24-70 lens at 1/200, f5.6, ISO 200 with off camera flash to properly expose the dogs. Barbara

This isn't a photo of dogs playing pool, but a true portrait – that picture-perfect image of Man's Best Friend. Whether you want a formal portrait with a journalistic feel or a record of a family experience, it starts with getting the dogs outside. Ann walks you through everything you need to know from developing the story to perfecting the lighting and finally, the sales process. By the time you're done, you'll know how to find the perfect location, be it the yard, a park the hills or the beach. You'll feel confident in managing the dog(s) and you'll make it a fun experience for everyone from the pet and owner to yourself.

Why Be Certified? Being a successful professional photographer takes more than a camera. A Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation will help you:
• Show the industry and potential clients that you have the knowledge and the talent to back up
your business. • Let clients know you mean business and that your knowledge and skills are cutting edge…before
they meet you. • Earn prestige, more clients, and simply put…more money for your business.
If you are interested in raising the bar and become a CPP Certified Professional Photographer: • Let's start a study group. The recommended book London, Stone & Upton. Photography. 2011
(10th edition) has eighteen chapters. • Read a chapter or two a week and have a Q&A each week. • We can meet at a specific location or better yet meet once a week for an hour on Goggle +
Hangout (its free and you can save time) • Upcoming examination in the Bay Area in June or July. We can have one in SF area if enough are
interested. CONTACT me to sign up or more information: Wayne Miller, Cr. Photog., CPP Certification Liaison Professional Photographic Certification Commission 2010, 2011, 2012and 2013 email:; [email protected] or 925-330-8737 WHY WAIT??? Your education and Certification is your key to future success!
