CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
I am writing this on a flight to Cape Town. A few minutes ago I was on the
ground under a very cold and gloomy sky. It was the 7 o clock flight and the
sunlight had barely got through the heavy layer of cloud. Then we took off.
Within a few minutes we were through the depressing clouds and into bright
sunshine. It is one thing being underneath wet and dark clouds but it is a
completely different thing being above them. My world, which was now
completely different to everybody else’s, except, of course, my fellow
passengers, had transformed from something gloomy and depressing into
something magical. There really is something special about viewing clouds
from above them. It’s like being transported into a different universe, back
into our childhood days where castles are built on the soft pillows of cloud, a
universe where giants walk and unicorns play.
So what has this got to do with photography? It got me thinking about the
last club meeting. I had been really busy at work and was not in the right
frame of mind for a club meeting. At 3 o clock that afternoon I only started
preparing images for the evening. I had images from some shoots that I had
done but I didn’t have time to select and prepare them properly. But as the
evening started I began to relax and really enjoy the images. Some excellent
work had been submitted and the Judge was really enjoying them. This
showed from the generous awards that she was handing out and, in addition,
her comments and criticisms were accurate and helpful. Together with some
lovely images she transformed my stressed out, gloomy world into a happy
place. All of a sudden the purpose of photography became clear again.
The flight to Cape Town takes around two hours. During the flight you are
removed from normal life, there are no complaining colleagues, no angry
customers and no distracting emails, sms’s and telephone calls. Photography,
for me, does the same. It forces me to get away from the stresses of daily
life and lets me focus on something I enjoy. Yes, sometimes you have to
force yourself to get out and take pictures or come to the club, but it is
always worth it!
See you at the next meeting.
Colin

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE
1. Select Canvas (Frame) Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add a
boarder to the image and make your adjustements. If you do not wish to add a boarder, go
to Step 2.
2. Select Image Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Tick the following boxes:
Scales Sizes, Constrain Proportions and Resample Images.
3. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.
4. When resizing a horizontal image (Landscape) enter 1920 pixels in the Width Box and the
vertical size will be adjusted automatically if you have ticked the “Resample Image” box. If
the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is correct. If the vertical adjusts to a
value more than 1080 pixels (say 1096 pixels) then adjust the vertical size to 1080 pixels
and the horizontal size will automatically reduce to below 1920 pixels if you have ticked the
“Resample Image” box.
5. When resizing a vertical impage (Portrait) enter 1080 pixels in the Height Box. The value in
the Width Box will change automatically to match the original image if you have ticked the
“Resample Image” box.
6. The maximum image data file size is 1,500Kilobytes in the JPEG format. Note that if a
border is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and reducing the file size to
a maximum of 1,500 Kilobytes to ensure that the image remains within the specified
1,500Kb.
7. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can be
selected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/Convert to Profile.
