hard.” In 2013-14, the Patriots wereoutrebounded by 3.1 boards per contest, but did have a plus turnover margin.

Among the key returnees are 5-10 se-nior guard David Brown (3.5 ppg, 2.0apg), 6-4 senior guard Trevonte Dixon (6.5ppg, 4.0 rpg), and 6-7 senior forward LukaZivkovic (5.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg). “Trevonte isstepping up, and has seen that he needsto be a team leader,” said Edwards. “Hewill be relied upon for scoring, rebound-ing, and the little things like takingcharges. He had a great scrimmage re-cently against Barton.”

Also returning is sophomore 6-3 forwardAlex Bryant (0.3 ppg, 0.4 rpg).

With no big man in the paint, offensivelythe Patriots will “keep the basket open”with cutting and motion, while placingdefensive emphasis on attacking in theopen court.

Edwards pointed to Browning as a truequarterback for the 2014-15 Patriots.“Detrek brings the intangibles that are veryhard for a coach to teach sometimes. Hejust has a savviness and an understand-ing of the game that’s really helped us alot. He knows where the ball needs to goand he’s going to hit big shots for you. Ihave the utmost confidence in Detrek. Heis a pleasure to coach.” During his se-nior season at Irmo High School, Brown-ing averaged 13.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 4.0apg. He was an All-State and All-Regionselection, leading the Yellow Jackets toan undefeated season (29-0), a statechampionship, and a national ranking(13th) from USA Today.

The Francis Marion University men’s bas-ketball team will open its 2014-15 cam-paign on Friday (Nov. 14) when the Patri-ots take on Catawba College in the PeachBelt Conference-South Atlantic Confer-ence Challenge in Salisbury, N.C.

The contest will tip-off at 8 p.m. in the In-dians’ 3,500-seat Goodman Gymnasium.It will follow a 6 p.m. match-up betweenLenoir-Rhyne University and UNC Pem-broke.

Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne will swap op-ponents on Saturday with FMU facingLenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 6 p.m.

With a career mark of 499-366 in 30 sea-sons, FMU head coach Gary Edwardsenters the 2014-15 campaign one win shyof the 500-win plateau. He has amassed110 of those victories at Francis Marion.

The Patriots will play their first home gameat the Smith University Center on Thurs-day, Nov. 20, against non-conference foeFlorida College. Home contests will bestreamed live online at http://www.ustream.tv/fmupatriots and shownlocally on Time Warner Cable channel 11,courtesy of the Patriot Sports Network.

Edwards welcomes back five lettermenfrom last season’s 12-15 squad that placedfourth in the PBC East Division and ranked10th nationally in three-point field goalsmade per game (10.1). Edwards has addedfive newcomers – two junior college trans-fers and three true freshmen – in additionto red-shirt freshman point guard DetrekBrowning.

Edwards said, “I am really proud of thisgroup. We have made progress in thepre-season, and I feel as though we couldnot be in any better a situation headinginto Friday’s opener. The newcomers haveworked hard, including adjusting to earlymorning practices, and that has broughtus closer together as a unit.”

He went on to say, “We must create turn-overs to offset our lack of size, but I be-lieve our lineups will create matchup prob-lems for some teams. Those turnovers willmean we don’t have to rebound every de-fensive possession. We’re not as big aswe were last year, but we’ll go after it very

2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK

4

Edwards also mentioned that the Patri-ots could go with both Brown and Brown-ing in the back-court at times without adrop-off in production.

The first-year newcomers include 6-3 jun-ior forward David Jerome (transfer fromFlorida State College at Jacksonville), 6-4 freshman guard Mike Davis, Jr., 6-1freshman guard A.J. Jackson, 6-7 fresh-man forward Jay Alexander, and 6-3 jun-ior forward Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan (transferfrom Western Oklahoma State College).Edwards said of his newcomers, “I’m re-ally impressed with how hard they’ve beenworking. We’ve got four freshmen who Ireally believe could be Freshman of theYear because they’ll get plenty of play-ing time.

“David (Jerome) is a player who can getthe tough rebound and can score aroundthe basket. Mike and A.J. are similar play-ers in that both are talented, shoot theball well, and are ready to play. Jay is awarrior who will flat out go and get theball.

“Dii’Jon is a great addition to our team, and I love his game. He’s a slasher, along defender, and has a winning attitude. We’re a much better team when Dii’Jon’son the floor.” Edwards noted Allen-Jordan’s length and his ability to attackthe rim and draw contact as valuable tothis year’s club. Jordan averaged 16.3ppg, 5.8 rpg, and 1.4 apg this past sea-son for Western Oklahoma State, garner-ing second-team All-Region accolades. In 27 games last season, Jordan at-tempted 226 free throws (more than eightper game).

“If we play hard and learn each game, that is all I can ask of a team,” Edwardsconcluded.

Francis Marion’s 2014-15 schedule in-cludes 15 home dates. Eight of thesquad’s first 13 contests will be in theSmith University Center – a site wherethe Patriots were 8-3 a year ago.

Entering its 44th season of basketball,Francis Marion is 24-19 all-time in sea-son openers, including a 6-2 mark underEdwards. FMU has spilt six all-timemeetings with Catawba, while LRU leadsthe all-time series 5-1.
