Timetable:

I have been visiting and photographing a se-ries of abandoned buildings such as mental homes, hospitals, orphanages, morgues and houses. I have so far been using film cameras and more specifically lomography cameras to capture the photos. I plan to take this further with using both a digital camera and large for-mat film to give my final book a good amount of varitation.

My theme is mental illness and this is shown throughout my quotations.

The walk was taken in several stages, from Waltham Abbey to Shenley, Abbots Langley to Staines, Staines to Epsom and Epsom to Westerham before going on to Dartford, the river and Carfax and arriving back at Waltham Abbey. Each stage fills a chapter and the reader is advised to take a leaf out of Sinclair’s own book by taking one stage, one chapter at a time.

Duane Michals:

Michals’ work makes innovative use of photo-sequences, often incorporating text to examine emotion and philosophyHe is noted for two innovations in artistic photography developed in the 1960s and 1970s. First, he “told a story through a series of photos” as in his 1970 book Sequences. Second, he handwrote text near his photographs, thereby giving information that the image itself could not convey.

I started experimenting using the same theme as I used last term, which was putting illustrative ty-pography over images. I gathered quotes from online sources and the others were created by myself.

The quotes are themed within mental illness ,the emotion behind it and most importantly how the people who resided there while it was up and running may have felt.

I began experimenting with the pictures I had accumulated by overlapping them ontop of each other to create new images which gives them a fairytale feel about them. This is a deep contrast to the con-

trast of the orginal images.

I will use last semesters experimentation with photography and illustration to help mold my final major project. My aim is to go to a number of previ-ously well researched abandoned buildings ranging from mental hospitals, morgues, orphanages, schools and mansions. While exploring I will use my personal array of film cameras such as my mini diana and lomogra-phy LC-A to capture what I find. After developing these images I plan to use illustration to finalize them via writing over them with phrases that I have gather from secondary research and also the internet and books. The phrases will center around the lies within the establishments of which the photographs were taken.

For my primary research I will watch a selection of films centered around lies such as Girl interrupted, Magdalene sisters, One flew over the cuck-oos nest etc. I will also read a selection of books for gathering research on artists, along with reading magazines and watching the news for current stories on my topic. For secondary research I will ask my peers what they think of these types of establishments.

For my final piece I will aim to create a hard back book which will hold a varied selection of my work that has been created for this project. I will aim to create from around 30-40 combined image and illustration pieces.

To take my book further, I will return to the buildings and take new photos using both a digital camera and large format film. This will give the book a large amount of variation within its images.
