Managing The Environment For Sustainable Development

• Supervised Clean-up activities in One Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety (1690) Oil Spill sites nationwide

• Remediated Four Hundred and Thirty (430) lead poisoned homes (compounds) in Zamfara State and Four (4) Hectares of lead poisoned industrial sites in Bagega Village Zamfara State.

• Built Geographic Information System (GIS) Support Database of Tank Farms & Underground Storage Facilities in 9 States

• Produced Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Mapping (Phase 2) covering 100km inland from the coastline

• The Ministry procured equipment for the GIS (Geographic Information System)/Remote sensing laboratories at the Headquarters in Abuja and five zonal offices located in Kaduna, Lagos, Port-Harcourt, Uyo and Warri which I commissioned in September 2014.

• The Ministry collaborated with other Stakeholders to create the oil spill monitor – a robust GIS-Based web platform that has raised the level of awareness and transparency in oil spill management.

Key Achievements

• Distribution of 30 Low Pressure Injection Foaming Machines:

• The Ministry distributed a first set of 30 Low Pressure Foaming Machines to small Scale Ice Machine Makers, under its Ozone Depleting substances Phase out Programme.

Key Achievements

Establishment Of Integrated Waste Management Facilities

• Implementation of E-waste control programme at global, regional and country levels

• Developed the National Environmental Regulations for the Electrical/Electronic Sector;

• Facilitated the development of the Abuja Platform on EWaste- a global initiative to address E-Waste problems;

• Developed guideline for importers of used electrical/electronic equipment;

• Developed Guidelines for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programme that addresses many waste streams including E-Waste.

• Commissioned the Air Curtain Burner in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to address the environmental implications associated with open burning particularly by Regulatory Agencies (e.g CBN, NAFDAC etc) to reduce the emission of hazardous air pollutants into the atmosphere.

Establishment Of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring And Management Stations

• Stations where information on air quality is collated, analyzed and disseminated;

• The equipment has the capacity to generate scientific data for proper planning and creating public awareness.

• Trained Fifty (50) Health Officers on the construction of domestic bio-digester nationwide;

• To date, 7,983 Environmental Health Officers have been registered and certified nationwide;

• An additional total of 4,324 Environmental Health Professionals have been registered to sit for the Certification examinations in November 2014.

Establishment Of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring And Management Stations

The Federal Ministry of Environment has developed:

• A National Policy on Climate Change;

• A National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action;

• A strategic plan for addressing climate change in Nigeria.

• Developed capacity of Agriculture Extension Service Officers on interpretation and dissemination of climate change information to end users especially rural farmers;

• Established a National Greenhouse Gas Inventory system to provide database for estimating greenhouse gases from various sectors of the economy;

• Established data base system to provide information accessibility to various stakeholders for climate and climate change scenarios modelling to assist planning in various climate-related activities;

• Developed a pilot greenhouse gas mitigation solar project in Federal Government College, Kwali

Highlights

• Trained and equipped staff of National Parks Service for Para-militarization as approved by Mr. President.

• Trained 546 students on Sound Environmental Management

• One Hundred and Fifty Seven(157) Erosion and Flood Control Projects executed nationwide at various stages of completion

• Fifteen (15) Erosion and Flood Control Projects attained an average of 60-100% completion in the South East Geo Political Zone

• The Dredging and Sandfilling Works at Federal University of Technology, Otuoke, Bayelsa State-100% completion

• Phase I of the Channelization of Asa River in Kwara State is completed

• Sagbama Erosion Control and Rehabilitation works, Bayelsa State

• Three Hundred and Seven(307) Web-based Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) established to forecast flood incidences for major cities in Nigeria with 5 days lead time

• Seventeen (17) Community-based FEWS established to provide adequate community based monitoring & forecasting

• Four (4) stand alone Automated FEWS facilities installed along Ogun-Osun River Basin, Eruwa River, Benin-Owena River Basin and Ose River; monitored in the central hub/GIS laboratory in Abuja

• Established 179.26 Hectares Permanent Sample Plots (PSP) nationwide.

• Produced tree and ornamental seedlings for training and establishment of plantations

• Established National Forest Information System (www.nfis.org.ng)

• Establishment of 22ha of Gum Arabic plantation in Yarda and Dandiin Jigawa and Kebbi States

• Development of Green Village in Jiddel and Waga, Adamawa State

• Establishment of a 2Km shelterbelt in Zango/Baure, Katsina State.

• 2,871,415 seedlings for forestry and orchards have been procured and planted.
