LETTER

every month I feel like the content and design can’t get much better

than the prior month’s issue. I keep proving myself wrong. This month we tried our first ever feature on some of Fargo-Moorhead’s top bar-tenders. The interview and photography process made for a great time and learning experience on what it takes to be a great bartender. On top of that, we listed most of the area’s outdoor patios

because we know how much Fargo residents appreciate the outdoors and doing everything outside!

Last year it was fun featuring RedHawks manager, Doug Simunic, and I’m confident to say that this year’s interview and photo shoot was even more of a blast! We also all agree that Mason Jennings supplied us with one of the coolest interviews we have done. We especially liked how he mentioned that

he gets his influence from Walmart. As for our other sections, we really are trying to expand our guides and re-sources. I hope you enjoy our event calendar and Hotlist section. Challenge yourself to experience some of our recommendations and then email us about how much you enjoyed it!

In conclusion, summer is here and we understand the impact the lakes have on this community. But here at

FARGO HOOTERS

1What are your

nicknames?

There are actually two Kel-seys so everyone calls me Kelso.

2What are

your fa-

vorites at

Hooters?

I love the 1/2 pound of steamed shrimp and a strawberry ice tea!

3 What

kind of

girl are

you?

I would consider myself a guy’s kind of girl. I love sports and if you are a Steelers fan then you will definitely be on my good side!

4 What are

some

things we might not

know about Hooters?

On Wednesdays, Fridays and Satur-days we wear black uniforms and if you see a white name tag it means

that Hooters girl is under 21.

5 You're Miss

Hooters of

North Da-

kota?

Yeah, I was just presented the crown last month at the pageant hosted at the Big Boy’s Toys

Expo at the Fargodome.

6 What do

you get to

do with

that?

I get to represent Hooters of North Dakota at the Miss In-ternational Hooters Pageant

in Hollywood, Florida! I’m going to Holly-wood!…Florida?…

[laughs].

1 Your new album is entitled “Minnesota.” Tell us exactly what Minnesota means for you?Jennings: It is a word that to me brings to mind contrast. Extremes. Hot/cold. City/wilderness. Opposites slam into each other in Minnesota.

2 How has your music grown after years of performing?Jennings: I think it gets more refined. I feel like I’ve learned how to sing better over the years. Playing songs in front of people weeds out ones that don’t work.

3 Your lyrics are very poetic. Do you con-sider yourself a poet?Jennings: I suppose so, at heart. I find myself staring at trees a lot. But I am more of a song-writer. Words sitting flat on a page isn’t really my bag.

4 Where do you get your inspiration?Jennings: Everywhere. But mostly Walmart. If they are out of it, Target. Anywhere there are people.

5 Do you have any weird superstitions before you perform?Jennings: I eat Thai food pretty much every-day. I don’t like green light on me. I don’t like the pre-show music to have drums. Ya know, the usual.

6 What’s your past experience with Fargo and what do you think of our little city?Jennings: I love Fargo. I always think of trains. It’s one of the first places I played outside of Minneapolis.

7When you come to Fargo what’s your favorite thing to do here?Jennings: I love Zandbroz Variety store. That place rules. Great folks.

8 If you had one day to live and you had to spend it in Fargo, what would you do?Jennings: Are you threatening me? [Laughs] I guess I would play a show. I always try to be mindful that each day could be my last. Hope-fully, not soon, but it’s good to do what I love everyday.

Webster’s Definition: A recreation area that adjoins a dwelling, is often paved, and is adapted especially to outdoor dining.

Spotlight’s Definition: A recreation area that’s snow-free for three months out of the year and often trampled by an overabundance of ravenous summer-time enthusiasts who shamelessly strut their barely-there clothing.

>>Anthony has been slinging drinks for the last eight years. He has bartended at Playmak-

ers, The Hub and has been at the HoDo for a little over a year. His quick wit, love of music, laughter and ninjas keep us coming back for more. Next time you’re at the HoDo throwing a few back, try an “Antito Mojito” or one of his pop-ular shots, the “A-Bomb.” What drink is

going to be hot this summer? According to Anthony, “Summer drinks mean fresh and clean, so teas, mojitos, and cocktails containing fresh citrus, cucumber, mint, pomegranate and blueberries.”Also, make sure you ask him about the time he dressed up as a ninja with smoke machines behind the bar...Actually, there are a lot more stories he can tell you but you have to ask him in person.

She tends at one of Fargo’s newest adult playgrounds - The BAR. Her six years of experience combined with her off-the-charts sass and wit are sure to keep you coming back for more. She also has some of the

edgiest jokes in town, “Why are men smarter in bed?...because they’re plugged into a genius.” A few must knows about Alisha: her go-to drink is Rumpies, her summer-time drink suggestion is “The Perfect Summer” and, though she may be edgy, she’s firm in her belief that actions speak louder than words.

directly with people. But nowadays working with customers is his favorite part of the job. Cas has worked at the West Fargo and Moorhead O’Leary’s for a total of ten solid years. He’s got a wicked good pick-up technique he uses

on the ladies: “I approach a girl and say ‘hi’ but when she tries to say ‘hi’ back I interrupt her and say, ‘excuse me,’ pull out my asthma inhaler, take a hit of it and then say, ‘Sorry, you just took my breath away.’” Go in and try Cas’ favorite drink, the Crown 7, or ask him to tell the story about the half naked woman and the mop closet.

more impressive is that all those years have been racked up at Rick’s. Spike has a joke or two for any of his custom-ers: “A three legged dog walks into a bar and says, ‘I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.’” He recommends

that everybody try the Chuck Norris and Kamikaze shots. Heck, everybody likes those anyway. Looking for a good sum-mer drink? According to Spike, you have to try the seasonal beer and fruity drinks like Sex on the Beach. Or do you want a good story? Ask Spike to tell you about the time that Robin Zander from Cheap Trick came into Rick’s.

with a splash of OJ. When it comes to her life Alicha has a quote that rings true to her, “Let the best of your past be the worst of your future.” Guys, sorry to tell you but you don’t have a chance stealing her heart because it’s already owned by her twin ten year old daughters.

years of tending experience at various bars around town, Shane’s dry sense of humor has made him a local favorite. The Texas native has been in Fargo for 15 years and has some great advice to

bestow. Favorite pick-up line? “Just say hi. That’s it. It’s simple, effective and ice breaking.” Good first date advice? “Lie your ass off! JK. Honesty is the best policy.” Good, simple advice from one of the best bartenders around. When you visit Shane ask for a pootie tang. We promise it’s not what you think.

>>With only two years of bar-tending experience, Cassie is the newcomer to our Bar-Tend

Bunch. She graduated from Fargo North in 2004 and went to MSUM for mass communications but loves her job as a bartender. “I love the crazy, fast at-mosphere I get to work in. When I look down the bartop and it’s lined with peo-

ple who need drinks, that’s what excites me. It can be overwhelming, but you just have to keep it together and keep moving to make that mad cash.” Though fairly new to bartending, it’s clear that Cassie has what it takes. Oh, and a word of warning to guys: she hates all pick-up lines so don’t bother trying any.

and has been at The Northern for almost three and a half years now. She’s heard every kind of pick-up line from, “Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven?” to “come over here and feel something really cool.” So guys, try to be more

original the next time you go to see her. During her years of bartending there’s not much she hasn’t seen. She’s been spit on, had glasses chucked at her head and, on occasion, even smacked people with a shaker. Lindsay gives one good reason to come watch her serve, “Everyday behind the bar is a dance party, in my case, a no pants dance party.

>>Sean started his bartending ca-reer at Old Chicago but has been working at Duffy’s for the last

four and a half years. He’s lived in Fargo-Moorhead his entire life and has never felt any desire to move. Like all good bartend-ers, Sean is quick with a joke: “Have you heard the one about the one night a man walks up to his wife with a duck under his arm and says, ‘This is the pig I’ve been

sleeping with.’ His wife says, ‘That’s a duck you idiot!’ The man replies, ‘I know, that’s who I was talking to.’” When you visit Sean watch out because he likes to push the big gingers – a double shot of Jameson and ginger with a lemon and lime. This summer he recommends the classic Summer Shandy or a Jeremiah Weed and lemonade.

BLAST FROM THE PAST!

Mitch Malloy has lived the life of a rock star. Af-ter growing up in Dickinson, he moved to New York where he hit it big in the music industry. He has since toured all over the United States and Europe, and even had a stint as the lead singer for Van Halen. FM Spotlight caught up with Malloy to talk about what North Dakota means to him, his unlikely rise to fame and what’s in store for his future.

Page 62: FM Spotlight Magazine June 2012

60

1. Do you have any crazy stories from your years of performing?Malloy: There was the time I was wearing red leather pants and they split from the front to the back of the crotch to reveal my tighty whitey’s. Maybe God was trying to tell me no more red leather pants. I think I’ve worn them since though, a different pair of course. Then there was the time a girl jumped up on stage with her arms out lunging for me, running around the stage. She had a CRAZY look in her eyes. I was a little freaked out. The look in her eyes was one I didn’t recognize. There was no time to be flattered – it was more just like, “Run for your

life!” Thankfully the roadies grabbed her before I became possessed.

2. What sort of impact has growing up in North Dakota had on you?Malloy: Huge. I think I look at things in a much more down to earth and grounded way because of it. It also has made me proud to be from there and proud of all the travel and things I’ve done since I left. My father, the late Judge Harry Malloy, was very proud to be a North Dakotan and he instilled that in me.

3. What are you up to these days?Malloy: I’m working on a

new acoustic live CD. I’m recording songs live in my studio and recording them for YouTube at the same time. I love recording live. I have one song from it posted on You-Tube now. It’s called “On And On Acoustic” and it features Keith Howland, the lead guitar player from the band Chicago, sitting next to me also sing-ing background. He’s my buddy and we wrote the song together and he played most of the leads on the last CD which was called Mitch Malloy II and it’s a tribute to the first CD. I have as special guests Phil Collen – lead guitar play-er from Def Leppard, Hughie McDonald – bass player from Bon Jovi, Keith Scott – lead guitar player for Bryan Adams, Des Dickerson – lead guiar

player and background singer from Prince and the Revolution and many more friends. People can purchase that on iTunes or at www.mitchmalloy.com

4. What do you think of Fargo?Malloy: To me Fargo was always the big town, as I’m from Dick-inson. So it was always exciting going to Fargo. It always seemed to have a certain vibe or energy about it that was bigger than what I was used to. It’s funny because I’ve lived just outside of NYC and now in Nashville for 15 years and when I go to Fargo it still has that same vibe to me. Also, Fargo was exciting because we knew when we got to Fargo we were almost to the lake. I’ve had a lot of fun in Fargo growing up at the lake in the summers, also having a lot of fun with my friends who moved there from Dickinson. And then my dad lived there for a long time before he died, so I used to visit him there for many years. Then there were the Fargo Theatre shows I did and those were fantas-

tic memories. I have a lot of good memories of Fargo.

5. If you had one day left to live and you had to spend it in Fargo, what would you do?Malloy: Wow! That’s a tough one. I’m pretty sure I would do a show at the Fargo Theatre. To me that would be a good way to go out.

6. If you had one day left to live and you had to spend it in Fargo, what would you do?Malloy: Wow! That’s a tough one. I’m pretty sure I would do a show at the Fargo Theatre. To me that would be a good way to go out.

7. How often do you come to the area?Malloy: I try to come once a year. Doesn’t always happen, but I try. My family has a place on Lake Melissa (in Detroit Lakes) and that is my favorite place to be on the planet, so I try to come.

? WANT MORECheck out Malloy’s website www.mitchmalloy.com

or find him on YouTube.

8. How did you hit it big and what did it feel like when you first realized you were on your way to stardom?Malloy: Hard work. I moved to New York and just pounded it out and tried to make the right moves and I guess I did. But it felt great when I got my major label deal with RCA/BMG and made my CD in LA and then was touring the world and people were showing up and cheering and writing to me.

I love meeting the fans and talking to them and getting to know them. But the best feeling is when people write to you and tell you your music saved their life or helped them get through a dark time. I never realized as a kid the importance music can have in someone’s life. And when I started I never thought about that. I just thought there is something pulling and tugging at me to do this and I don’t know why. I guess you just think, well I’m pretty good at this so I should do it. But then when people take your music into their homes and into their lives it’s pretty amaz-ing. To affect someone’s life through your talent

is a great feeling, humbling even. So that to me is more important than feeling like a star any day of the week.

But I have to admit the day Eddie Van Halen called me and asked me to join Van Halen I thought wow… OK, this is cool. Last year I was on tour in Europe and after a show I was signing autographs for three and a half hours in that line and German man was standing in front of me crying as he was reading the liner notes of the new Mitch Malloy II CD and saw his son’s name. He was overcome. It was amazing. I have a song on the new Mitch Malloy II CD called “I’m the one” and I had invited fans to sing at the end and send me MP3’s and I told them I would pick the best three. Well, one of them was this young boy and I actually cried when I heard his voice – he was trying so hard and there was so much passion in it that it made me weep. So I put him on and of course added his name to the credits and that blew his father away. Getting to do your music and the cheering is great, but moments like that are what it’s all about for me.

Doug Simunic’s life is baseball. Batting averages and ERA’s are always on his mind. The RedHawks flow through his veins. Even after 17 seasons of managing he still practically lives at Newman Outdoor Stadium or on the FM RedHawks’ bus from May to September. Simunic, or Simi as his friends call him, comes to Fargo every summer to manage the RedHawks. FM Spotlight caught up with Manager Simunic to find out his thoughts on Fargo and the RedHawks.

1. Spotlight: How do the Red-Hawks look this year?

Simi: I was pleasantly pleased with the way our exhibition season went. It was a lot of the guys’ first taste of independ-ent baseball and was perfectly played. The regular season is off to a good start.

2. Spotlight: You play 100 regular season games. How do you keep everyone healthy and happy with such a grueling schedule?

Simi: It’s over three and a half months so you’re always on the go. There’s a lot of baseball be-ing played. Guys wear down so our job is to know when to push the buttons and to know when to back off so we don’t burn them out.

3. Spotlight: What’s your favorite aspect of baseball?

Simi: I’ve done it for 37 years so evidently there’s something I like about baseball. It’s a daily game… It’s not a very emotional game like football or hockey where you only play once or twice a week. With baseball you need

The MANager Behind the Teamto be even-keeled. You have to try to be as steady and competitive about it as you can.

4. Spotlight: What does Fargo mean to you and what do you think the RedHawks means to Fargo?

Simi: I’ve made this my second home. I come May 1 and I don’t leave until Septem-ber so my summer months are spent here. We have great fan support. We have a nice sta-dium. There’s something for everyone. Kids can get close to the players. The concessions are good. You can get whatever you want at the ball game. Plus, with the nice stadium seating, the RedHawks are right there at the top of the league with a great atmosphere.

5. Spotlight: What’s some of your favorite things to do around town?

Simi: There’s always something to do around here. We’re in and out of here so much you barely have time to unpack your bags. I like the Street Fair, Airshow and Ribfest. Those are three things that are fun to be around but the key is that you need to be in town for them. Our schedule sometimes doesn’t allow it.

Page 69: FM Spotlight Magazine June 2012

6. Spotlight: Tell us about grill-ing out at Newman Outdoor Stadium.

Simi: I like to cook outside so I’m not afraid to get the grill going and make something. We just sit out and enjoy the afternoon. I spend a lot of time at the ballpark so it’s better than go-ing out to a restaurant everyday because you get to do that while on the road. I like to mix it up so I like chicken, fish and turkey. We don’t have a favorite; we just make it all good.

MONTH

1. How did you get into being a chef?Olson: When I was a little kid it seemed everytime I wasn’t feeling good I would go to my grandma’s house and she would watch me. Her way of making me feel better was to bake rolls and bread. As I got older, my first job was in an old school meat market in Breck-enridge when I was 13.

2. What’s your favorite dish to make?Olson: I’m into the old school, comfort food classics like pot pies and mashed potatoes. I put a super cool spin on them with the organic ingredients.

3. What’s your kid’s fa-vorite meal?Olson: My boys’ favorite meal is Kraft Mac and Cheese out of the box… I can’t make it to save my life. Heaven forbid that I read the direc-tions so whenever I make it they don’t eat it.

4. What’s a good sum-mer meal at the Radis-son?

Olson: Every Friday evening we feature fresh fish. I order it on Wednesday and it comes on Friday. It’s as fresh as you can get it. It ranges any-where from ahi tuna to blue shell crab. It’s super light and the fresh herbs make it very summery.

5. What’s something

interesting about you that we should know?Olson: I’m really into tattoos. If I weren’t cooking I would be a tattoo artist.

6. How many people work in the kitchen?Olson: There are 13 of us and they’re all amazing. My sous chef, Chandra Smith, is awesome and my lead line chef, Lionel Diaz, is great as well.
