WINK – WATERBASED INKS, COATINGS, AND ADHESIVES

Wink is Functional Materials’ family of environmentally friendly waterbased inks and coatings. The Wink 8500 series of inks and coatings are both environmentally friendly and free of NMP (n-methyl pyrollidone) and APE (alkyl phenol ethoxylates). NMP and APE are on many countries negative chemical lists.

WINK Waterbased inks have the following characteristics:

Low Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP) •Superior adhesion under lamination

NMP and APE free •Short laminating cycles

Consistent Metallic colors without gassing •Full bleed colors without coated overlay

Low Heavy Metals •Excellent print ability •Fast Drying without clogging screens •Good shelf life

These new products can be cured with air requiring minimal thermal input. These eco- energy wise materials have all the economic performance and appearance benefits that our partners in the printing industry expect from FM products, with the added benefit of being NMP and APE free. Manufacturers with plants world-wide can economically ship the same product world wide at low cost as a non-solvent, non-hazardous material. The new Wink products contain less regulated materials, simplifying reporting, and lowering regulated chemical releases. Of special interest for manufacturers of laminated PVC or over coated substrates is the superior adhesion obtained to either printed substrate and PVC overlay or UV topcoat. For laminated cards this allows the use of uncoated PVC overlay even when the ink contains high loadings of pigment such as with metallic effects. This superior adhesion can also result in shorter laminating cycles for improved plant efficiency.

Wink waterbased inks and coatings have excellent stability and shelf life. A complete range of matte or gloss colors including metallic and pearlescents, as well as custom color matching is also available. APPLICATION OF WINK WATER-BASED INK Substrates: Rigid PVC, vinyl coated paper, styrene, treated polyester, polycarbonate, metals and foils can all be printed

with Wink water-based materials. Mixing: Although Wink series inks are designed to remain dispersed, it is best if they are mixed for a short

period of time just before printing. A Cowles type blade with coarse serration for good pumping action is recommended. The blade should be 2/3 the diameter of the mixing vessel. Special combination blades with good pumping as well as dispersion action are made by Conn and Co. We recommend using a single Conn #5 ITT Blade. If this blade is near the bottom of the 5 gallon pail and is run at low to medium speed you will get good mixing and little air inclusion. Blades can be obtained from: Conn and Company 11 South Marion St, Warren, PA 16365 (www.connblade.com).

Typical Mixer Set-up: Squeegee: We have found that a dual durometer squeegee works best. One such squeegee is the yellow/blue 70/90

durometer squeegee available from Martin Supply (# 750063 x 3/8”). Printing: Wink 8500 series inks are formulated to be used as supplied at the recommended mesh. If viscosity

modifications are necessary, we supply a thickener (Wink 8105 Water Base Thickener). Ink can be thinned with the addition of small amounts of water. If the screen is drying too rapidly, a retarder (Wink 072 Retarder) is available. The only major change in the printing process when printing a waterbased ink is that the ink, when dry, cannot be easily resolublized. For this reason whenever there is a print stoppage, the screen, ink and squeegee should be sprayed with a misting of ammoniated water. If the stoppage will be longer than a few minutes the ink should be removed, and the press cleaned.

Drying: Wink series inks are fast drying and will dry in a few seconds in a forced air oven at 170-200oF.

Drying times are similar to conventional solvent base inks. The key requirement is higher air flow in the dryer. The addition of an air knife located at the inlet of` the oven, blowing parallel to and away from the press will speed the drying rate. Additionally, IR lamps will help to pre-heat the ink, increasing the drying rate, as well as allowing the ink to “level” to an even film thickness.

Clean-Up: Whenever there is a stoppage, screens should be cleaned with a mixture of 10-15% household ammoniated

cleaner in water . PM100 Cleaner is particularly suited for cleaning Wink Waterbased Inks. If the ink has been allowed to dry hard, use 100% PM100 Cleaner to remove the dried ink. Some printers have found that immersing partially cleaned squeegees, and/or flood bars in a container of water while the operator cleans the screen helpful. Ink removed from the press should not be reused, if it has been allowed to start to dry. If screen images are to be re-used, screens should be washed carefully and dried, before storing.

WINK| - 850 SERIES LAMINATING ADHESIVES Lamination of rigid PVC is sometimes problematic because of poor adhesion of uncoated overlay to some inks, particularly UV-cured inks and full-bleeds offset colors. To overcome this problem one must use an adhesive-coated overlay or apply a coating to the printed stock.

WINK| Waterbased laminating adhesives have the following characteristics: •Low VOC/ Non Flammable •Shortened laminating cycles •Adhesion to UV inks •Full-bleed colors without coated overlay •Superior adhesion after lamination •Application by screen printer or coater •No N-Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) •No Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylates (APE)

Composite Cards Manufacturers of composite cards can use WINK| Waterbased adhesives to improve the bond between the layers. Wink Waterbased adhesives have been successfully used to bond the following materials: polyvinyl chloride, polyester, polycarbonate, styrene, foil and paper. Of interest to manufacturers of cards requiring high heat or time lamination cycles, Wink Waterbased adhesives do not discolor in contrast to other solvent based adhesives. Application Methods The adhesive may be applied by a number of application methods including Gravure, Roll, and Screen Printing. The last letter of the Wink item number indicates the intended application method. The Wink 8500 is designed for screen printing (305 Mesh). Wink 850R is designed for Gravure and Roll coating. In general, the peel strength of adhesives is related to the film’s thickness. When applying adhesives, there is a film thickness at which further increases in film thickness do not lead to increased peel strength. Layer thicknesses below this point will suffer from inconsistent peel results.

Suitable Application Methods Comments Tower Coater, Single May require two passes to obtain sufficient film thickness Tower Coater, Double Provides sufficient film thickness in one pass. Blanket Coater, e.g. Dahlgren Roll design critical to obtain sufficient film thickness Flexo Anilox Coater In-Line, sufficient film thickness, more reproducible than Blanket

Type Silk Screen Press Slower than litho press, sufficient film thickness with 305 (US)

mesh.

WINK| - WATER-BASED INK FOR PRINTING PVC AND POLYSTYRENE

The increasingly stringent regulations regarding emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) to the atmosphere, combined with the insurance industry pressure to reduce workplace exposure to flammable and hazardous solvents, has created a need for a water-based screen printing ink with good print ability.

WINK| Water-based inks have the following characteristics: •Low VOC •Fast drying without clogging screens •Low Heavy Metals •Excellent print ability •Short laminating cycles •Good shelf life •Superior adhesion under lamination •Gloss or matte colors available •Full bleed colors without coated overlay •No n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) •Consistent Metallic colors without gassing •No alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APE) Of special interest for manufacturers of laminated PVC or over coated substrates is the superior adhesion obtained to either printed substrate and PVC overlay or UV topcoat. 08004F_TDS_Wink Application.doc 10/7/2009

APPLICATION OF WINK WATER-BASED SCREEN INK Conversion From Converting from solvent-base inks to Wink 8000 series water-based inks is not difficult. There are four Solvent Based Inks: issues that need to be considered and understood when printing with these water-based inks. 1) Stencil Emulsion – Emulsions suitable for water-based inks need to be used. 2) Stencil Preparation – Proper drying of the emulsion is critical for screen durability 3) Clean Up – What to do when the press stops is probably the biggest change from solvent-

based printing. As dried water-based ink cannot be resolublized after drying, the screen and press need to be cleaned whenever the press stops. Ammoniated water is used to clean the screen. Short stops can be handled by misting the image area with the ammoniated water.

4) Drying – The speed of drying of water-based inks is about the same as a solvent-based ink. Water-based inks are more influenced by air-flow in the oven, than by the temperature. The installation of an air-knife will speed up drying.

Screen Mesh: For consistent screen tension we recommend that a high quality screen mesh

be used. Use a high tensile polyester, or stainless steel, such as Saatilene® Hitech brand of high-tension, low-elongation polyester mesh. In general, the screen mesh to be used depends, on the pigment size, and the pigment loading. A general guide follows:

Screen

Mesh/in. Particle Size (Microns) Effect

300 15 Very Fine Lustre

250 30 Fine Lustre 200 50 Lustrous 158 65 Bright 140 80 Sparkle 125 100 Bright Sparkle 110 120 Glimmer

For mass tone printing a mesh of 220 or higher should be used. Meshes of 195 or lower should

be used with luster pigment inks such as Wink Fine Gold Eagle and Wink Fine Silver ink. We are happy to provide recommended mesh size for each of our inks.

Stencil Emulsions: There are several good emulsions designed for water-based inks in the market place. For

printers just starting out printing with water-based inks, a universal emulsion is often a good choice. Universal emulsions are those that are suitable for solvent, water-based and UV ink. Autosol 6000 from Autotype is one such universal emulsion. Other suitable emulsions for water-based inks include Autosol 7000 also from Autotype, and emulsions from Saati. Extra hardener can be added to increase screen life.

Stencil Preparation: When preparing the stencil, the only change that must be made from the typical procedures

used, is that the dryness of the screen before exposure is critical. Improperly dried screens will break down rapidly in use. Fans blowing across the screen and dedicated screen driers are two methods of acceptably drying screens. As with any emulsion change, the correct exposure times will need to be found. Durability may also be improved by multiple exposures.

WINK| 8507 CLEAR BASE FOR LUSTRE COLORS Lamination of rigid PVC is sometimes problematic because of poor adhesion of the overlay to some printing inks. This problem is more apparent when using UV-cured inks and full-bleed offset colors. Use an adhesive coated overlay, or apply a coating to the printed stock to overcome this problem. Wink 8507 Clear vehicle will minimize the amount of overcoating needed for adhesion.

The increasingly stringent regulations regarding the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the atmosphere, combined with insurance industry pressure to reduce workplace exposure to flammable and hazardous solvents, has created a need for a good water-based laminating ink.

WINK| Water-based clear base vehicle has the following characteristics:

• Low VOC • Short laminating cycles • Adhesion to UV inks • Fast drying without clogging screens • Full-bleed colors without coated overlay • Smooth print surface for overprinting with litho inks Of special interest for manufacturers of laminated PVC is the superior adhesion obtained by both printed substrate and overlay. For laminated cards this allows the use of an uncoated overlay even when the ink contains high loadings of pigment, such as with metallic effects, full-bleed offset colors, or highly cross-linked UV ink. This superior adhesion can also result in shorter laminating cycles for improved plant efficiency. Lower temperature laminating cycles can also be used (270oF), which results in better edge distortion control and higher yields. A complete range of press-ready Wink Water-based ink colors, including metallic and pearlescents as well as custom color matching, is also available. These inks are custom-matched to the client's requirements and are supplied press-ready on a short turnaround basis. Other Useful WINK| items are: WINK 8500 Adhesive for uncoated overlay WINK 8501SM Primer for adjusting surface tension of substrate and improved adhesion

APPLICATION OF SLINK SOLVENT-BASED INK Properties: The Slink system is particularly adapted to the newer high-pigment

solids applications. Strong coloration particularly with high surface area pigment systems is well suited for this system. Runability is good, but care should be taken not to allow ink to dry in the screen.

Applications: Rigid PVC, vinyl coated paper, styrene, treated polyester, metals and

foils. Stencil Emulsions: Most standard emulsions should work. The usual cause of stencil failure

is improperly dried emulsion before washout. Stencils can be removed by using commercially available paint stripper and a high pressure washer. It is important, however, to follow manufacturer’s directions carefully.

Screens: We recommend the use of monofilament polyester screen material. For

mass tone printing a mesh of 220 or higher should be used. Meshes of 195 or lower should be used with lustre pigment inks such as Slink Fine Gold Eagle® and Slink Fine Silver ink.

Storage and Handling: Slink series ink should be stored in a cool place for maximum shelf-life.

But as with all inks, they must be allowed to return to ambient press room temperature before running. Local environmental, storage, and disposal regulations should be followed.

Mixing: Although Slink series inks are designed to remain dispersed, it is best if

they are mixed for a short period of time just before printing. Printing: Slink series inks are formulated to be used as supplied, but in instances

where viscosity adjustments are needed, Slink Thinner CH can be used and in instances where fine detail is needed or the press room is exceptionally dry or warm. Slink Retarder R500 can be used.

Drying: Slink series inks are fast drying and will dry in a few seconds in a forced

air oven at 170-200oF. Clean-Up: Slink Thinner CH should be used to keep ink from drying during the

short press stoppages. If screen images are to be re-used, screens should be washed carefully and dried, before storing.

SCREEN PRINTING GOLD GLOBE and FINE GOLD GLOBE

1. Vehicle Should be a clear vehicle with high polymer solid content (15%) and low viscosity (150 cp). 2. Pigment Concentration - 17 - 20% Gold Globe will use a 20% concentrate. Fine Gold Globe is finer in particle size than Gold Globe, but has approximately 15% more color strength. Thus, for a 165 lines per inch screen, a concentration of 17.5% pigment is sufficient. This will decrease the pigment to binder ratio and improve adhesion to overlay. Alternatively coat with Wink 7000 Laminating Adhesive or use Wink Fine Gold Globe ink. Fine Gold Globe may be printed with a 195 line per inch (75 line/cm) screen at 20% pigment concentration. Ink Makeup - 7 - 800 gms powder should be stirred in to 3000 gms clear at low shear adding pigment a small amount at a time to avoid forming agglomerates (Agglomerates, even microscopic ones, cause a loss of adhesion). When the ink is smooth, add additional 1000 gms. Clear vehicle and mix. Allow ink to sit overnight to ensure that pigment is completely wet out. 3. Screen Size Use fabric with as fine a filament thickness as possible. For Gold Globe 165 line per inch (65 line/cm) is recommended for good binding. Use of a finer screen, 195 lines per inch (75 line/cm), is possible with Fine Gold Globe. 4. Squeegee Use a 65 durometer squeegee with a rounded edge to insure proper ink laydown. 5. Adhesion A pull test minimum of 1600-1700 gms/inch. NOTICE: To the best of our knowledge, our technical information is accurate, but we cannot assume any liability thereof. SCREEN PRINTING GOLD EAGLE®, FINE GOLD EAGLE®, AND SUPER FINE GOLD EAGLE®

1. Vehicle

Should be a clear vehicle with high-polymer solid content (15%) and low viscosity (150 cp).

2. Pigment Concentration – 17-20%

Gold Eagle® will use a 20% concentrate.

Fine Gold Eagle® is finer in particle size than Gold Eagle®, but has approximately 15% more color strength. Thus, for a 165 lines per inch screen, a concentration of 17.5% pigment is sufficient. This will decrease the pigment to bind ratio and improve adhesion to overlay. Alternatively, coat with WINK 800 Series Laminating Adhesive or use WINK Fine Gold Eagle® ink.

Super Gold Eagle® is the same particle size as Fine Gold Eagle®. Super Gold Eagle® has higher color strength than Fine Gold Eagle®, but is closer in color shade to Gold Eagle® than Fine Gold Eagle®. This pigment incorporates the latest developments in the high luster screen-printing technology.

Super Gold Eagle® and Fine Gold Eagle® may be printed with a 195 line per inch (75 line/cm) screen at 17-20% pigment concentration.

Ink Makeup – 7-800 gms powder should be stirred in to 3000 gms clear at low shear adding pigment a small amount at a time to avoid forming agglomerates (agglomerates, even microscopic ones, cause a loss of adhesion). When the ink is smooth, add additional 1000 gms clear vehicle and mix. Allow ink to sit overnight to ensure that pigment is completely wet out. In general, it is better to use our press-ready SLINK solvent base ink or WINK waterbase ink.

3. Screen Size

Use fabric with as fine a filament thickness as possible (Saati Hitech mesh or equivalent). For Gold Eagle®, 165 lines per inch (65 lines/cm) is recommended for good binding. Use of a finer screen, 195 lines per inch (75 lines/cm), is possible with Fine Gold Eagle® and Super Gold Eagle®.

4. Squeegee Use a 65-durometer squeegee with a rounded edge to insure proper ink laydown. 5. Adhesion A pull test minimum of 1600-1700 gms/inch. SCREEN PRINTING SPARKLE GOLD EAGLE® and SPARKLE STAR GOLD EAGLE®

1. Vehicle

Should be a clear vehicle with high polymer solids content (>15%). Slink 1122 Clear is a suitable ink carrier.

2. Pigment Concentration - 20 - 22%

Sparkle Gold Eagle® use a 20% concentration Sparkle Gold Eagle® is larger in particle size than Gold Eagle®, but has approximately 15% less color strength. Thus, for a 110 lines per inch screen, a concentration of 20% pigment is sufficient. Sparkle Star Gold may be printed with a 110 line per inch screen at 22% pigment concentration. Because of the larger particle size there is poorer hiding power. Use of higher concentration of pigment or combination with other pigments is recommended. Ink Makeup - powder should be stirred in to part of the clear at low shear adding pigment a small amount at a time to avoid forming agglomerates (Agglomerates, even microscopic ones, cause a loss of adhesion). When the ink is smooth, add additional clear vehicle and mix. Allow ink to sit overnight to ensure that pigment is completely wet out. Alternatively you may use Slink PR Press Ready Ink.

3. Screen Size Use fabric with as fine a filament thickness as possible. 110 lines per inch (50 lines/cm) are recommended for good binding. 4. Squeegee

Use a dual durometer squeegee: 65 durometer outside and 95 durometer inside. A rounded edge will give a thicker ink laydown.

5. Adhesion A pull test minimum of 1600-2000 gms/inch. NOTICE: To the best of our knowledge, our technical information is accurate, but we cannot assume any liability thereof. SCREEN PRINTING PLATINUM FROST AND SILVER STERLING

General

These pigments are used for a “WHITE PLATINUM” look in contrast to ALUMINUM LUSTRAL S-22 AND S-23 which give a darker flop color. SILVER STERLING is designed as a single pass color OVER WHITE STOCK. PLATINUM FROST is designed to go over a silver or metallic base print such as ALUMINUM LUSTRAL MX. This gives optimum hiding as well as a very light bright Platinum effect. 1. Vehicle

Should be a clear vehicle with high polymer solids content (>15%). Slink 1122 Clear is a suitable ink carrier.

2. Pigment Concentration - 5 -17%

Use a 137 lines per inch (62 lines/cm) screen; a concentration of 5-17% pigment is sufficient.

Pigment powder should be stirred in to clear vehicle at low shear adding pigment a small amount at a time to avoid forming agglomerates (Agglomerates, even microscopic ones, cause a loss of adhesion). Allow ink to sit overnight to ensure that pigment is completely wet out. Alternatively you may use Slink PR Press Ready Ink.

3. Screen Size Use fabric with as fine a filament thickness as possible. 137 lines per inch (57 line/cm) are recommended for good binding. 4. Squeegee

Use a dual durometer squeegee: 65 durometer outside and 95 durometer inside. A rounded edge will give a thicker ink laydown.

5. Adhesion A pull test minimum of 1600-1700 gms/inch.

SCREEN PRINTING GOLD MERCURY and FINE GOLD MERCURY

1. Vehicle Should be a clear vehicle with high polymer solid content (15%) and low viscosity (150 cp). 2. Pigment Concentration - 17 - 20% Gold Mercury will use a 20% concentrate. Fine Gold Mercury is finer in particle size than Gold Mercury, but has approximately 15% more color strength. Thus, for a 165 lines per inch screen, a concentration of 17.5% pigment is sufficient. This will decrease the pigment to binder ratio and improve adhesion to overlay. Alternatively coat with Wink 7000 Laminating Adhesive or use Wink Fine Gold Mercury ink. Fine Gold Mercury may be printed with a 195 line per inch (75 line/cm) screen at 20% pigment concentration. Ink Makeup - 7 - 800 gms powder should be stirred in to 3000 gms clear at low shear adding pigment a small amount at a time to avoid forming agglomerates (Agglomerates, even microscopic ones, cause a loss of adhesion). UVP PHOSPHORESCENT PIGMENTS

UVP PHOSPHORESCENT PIGMENTS INTRODUCTION: Phosphorescence is an optical phenomenon whereby energy, usually UV or near UV light, is absorbed by a molecule and remitted at a lower wavelength. Phosphorescence is similar to fluorescence except that because the half-life of the emitted light is much longer for the fluorescence, one can have emission of light (afterglow or phosphorescence) long after the excitation source has been terminated. This afterglow phenomenon has been used to make objects glow in the dark, thus after exposure to near UV light the light source is extinguished and the object emits a characteristic phosphorescent color. The pigments that exhibit phosphorescence can be incorporated into a variety of ink, coatings or plastic formulations. APPLICATION: UVP phosphorescent are available in a variety of emission colors as listed below. The M series because of their larger particle size gives a brighter emission color. Because of its high specific gravity, care should be taken to uniformly mix inks and coatings containing this pigment. The pigment should be dispersed gently. Do not mill aggressively as it could destroy the pigment. Keep material away for acids to avoid reaction. Heavy metal ions such as lead, manganese, cobalt, etc., may poison the phosphorescence. Use with a transparent polymer system is recommended. Other transparent colorants may be added to change the color, adding opaque pigments will reduce the color intensity of the after glow. Major credit cards such as: American Express, Master Card and Visa have their logo or name imprinted with a blue ultraviolet marker. The enclosed paper describes various ultraviolet active compounds that fluoresce in various colors. INVISIBLE BAR CODES Bar coding as a method of carrying identification information is a well established technology. It is used for product identification, inventory control and in credit cards. Due to the desire of industry to maximize its usage of graphics on a product it is desirable to minimize the area devoted to a bar code. An alternative approach is to print an invisible bar code over the graphics. This would potentially allow many lines of code or two-dimensional codes to be printed with much greater information carrying ability. In principal one could even put two invisible colors one over the other in bar code. STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL As a result of interest in correlating finished product performance with various components of a process, it is desirable to mark lot-marks or a bar code on finished goods. An invisible bar code serves this purpose. An example would be: to mark every few yards on goods produced on a web using an ink jet or other marker.

SLINK IR BLOCKING SOLVENT-BASED INK

These inks have been developed for applications requiring IR opacity in the wavelength region from 800-1000nm. A typical application is in the manufacture of transparent or translucent credit cards. Many ATMs, Printing Presses and Card Personalization equipment such as Datacard machines have IR LED edge detectors which sense the presence of a card or sheet by the IR opacity of an IR opaque object. Without IR Opacity, cards are not sensed and are not transported through the process. #5801IRBGRN SLINK IRB5 GREEN YS SOLVENT INK gives high IR blocking with some yellow green color absorbance in the visible region. The ink may be blended with SLINK 0122 Clear vehicle to lighten the visible color.

SLINK IR BLOCKING SOLVENT-BASED INK ISO/IEC 7810 Specification The requirement for IR opacity is listed in the ISO standard ISO/IEC 7810 “All machine readable cards shall have an optical transmission density greater than 1,3 for the range of 450 nm to 950 nm, and greater than 1,1 for the range of 950 nm to 1000 nm on the specified areas as shown.” The IR Blocker #5801IRBGRN SLINK IRB5 GREEN YS SOLVENT INK was printed 156 mesh/inch (61 mesh/cm) and 305 mesh/in (120/cm) on 13 mil clear PVC Core stock. This is called single pass. Two of these sheets were laminated together with PVC overlay to form a 30 mil card structure. This is called double pass. One pass at 156 mesh/inch (61 mesh/cm) gives enough blocking to pass ISO specifications. The printer can experiment with the concentration and mesh to optimize for their requirements. These inks exhibit:

• Good compatibility with Waterbased inks and adhesives. • May be printed on front or back of core. • Excellent adhesion • Smooth laydown for excellent litho overprinting • Excellent runnability

WINK Waterbased IR Blocking inks are also under development.
