    CHAPTER 1 IlTRODUCTION

1.PURPOSE AND SCOPEThismanual is designed as an aid for the uniform training ofper-

sonnel in recognition ofarmored vehicles. It covers the methods tobe used in training and the vehicles that at present are consideredoperational.2. OBJECTIVE

The objective of training in the recognition of armored vehiclesis to make each individual capable of recognizing instantly armoredvehiclesnow in operation, and tobe able tolearn quicklytorecognizeany new vehicles that may be developed. The individual must beable to recognize such vehicles under varying conditions of terrain, weather, and light; when the vehicle, or observer, or both, aremoving orstationary; and when thevehicle isviewedfrom thefront, side, rear, top, oratvarying angles.3. RESPONSIBILITY OF UNIT COMMANDERS

It is the responsibility ofunitcommanders that each individual ofhis command be thoroughly trained in armored vehicle recognition. The subject cannot be delegated to a few short hours on the basictraining program, but must be continuous throughout training andcombat.

    4. NECESSITY FOR RECOGNITION TRa. The first requirement in warfare is the ability tofriend fromfoe. Before theoutbreakofthiswarfew realiz

problems ofrecognition: Since then, mistakes in recognisea, on land, and in the air, have been too numerousUsually thesemistakes are attendedbythemostseriouscItmustbefully realized that theonlyway toobviate theseis by demanding the highestgeneral level of proficiencytion. This can only be attained by,conrinual, concentIt is not suggested thatpracticewill make one absolutelyit will certainly gomostoftheway toreducingthechanbeinga danger not only to himself, but to his comrades-

    b. Recognition does not begin and end with appearessential todistinguish between the appearance offriendthis is seldon sufficient. It is also essential to recognize thIn the case of armored vehicles, this recognition gives kthe vulnerable portions, approximate speed, probableand ifhostile, a reasonable deduction as to futureactions

    C. What enables a person accurately and speedily toship, a plane, or a tank? The process is no different frecognizing an automobile, a horse, a bird, ora friend.thequestion, ''When I see a friendwalking down the streateveryfeature ofhimand, havinggonethrough aproces

decide thatit isBill?" Obviouslynot. Youknow immediately thatit is :'Bill" because you arefamiliarwith his whole appearance, hisvariouscharacteristics, andrthewayhe standsorwallks. Recognitionisinstinctive. It isnotdifficult totranslate thesevariouspointsintotermsofatank,an airplane, ora ship. So thecombination ofthese, and many other features, make up what is known scientifically as"total form perrcption." Now ask one more question, "Why didyou getto know the-various-fratures of afriend, orautomobile, orhorse?" The answer is, Because you were interested in him or it.Therefore, the requirement for proficiency in armored vehicle recognition isfamiliarity based on a knowledge of armored vehicles in general, aknowl-edgewhichwillbe gainedonlybyanarousedinterestandenthusiasmfor armored vehicles. If this is borne in mind, there will finally bean endto thosefamous lastwords," I think they'reours."5. USE OF RECOGNITION TRAINING AIDS

    a. This manual. (1) This manual is designed primarily forself-instruction andgeneral use,butwillalsoserveasatextinrecogni-tion courses. Itincludes four typesofmaterial: silhouettes, pocqtorialoperational data, photographs, and editorial matter. The materialIsthemostexactcurrently available. Themanual willbe constantlyenlarged and amended.

    (2) The silhouettes contained in this manual are drawn to aconstant scale, so that when viewed from 5 yards they represent thevehicleat400yards.

    b. Silhouette posters and photographs. (1) Silhouettesarethe foundation stones or ABC on which all recognition training isbased. They may seem dull and uninspiring, but thefact remainsthatthe"threeview" silhouette, givingthehead-on,plan,and sideview, shows very salient recognition features of a tank just as anarchitect's drawing of plan, section, and elevations gives theessen-

tials ofabuilding. Silhouettes should be studied fortheieffectandnot justfordetails. Photographspickupwheresleaveoff, byshowingthevehicleinvariouspositions. Havsketchsilhouettesofvarious armored vehicles.

6&TEACHING RECOGNITIONThe above training aids can best be utilized for teaching recog

nition iftrainingprogressesas indicated,below.a. First, the student must be taught the important items ofar-mored vehicle nomenclature and recognition features. (See ch. 2.)b. Individual vehicles are next presented, with emphasis on their

silhouette, engineering form photographic appearance, and interestappeal. In addition to Field Manuals, large posters or silhouettesmay be used in this stage of training. Silhouettes or photographscan also be projected on screens using delineoscopes or film slides orstrips.C. As soon as the student knows the component parts of thevehicle being studied, his attention must thereafter be directed to recognixing the total form' of the vehide. Modelscan be utilized to goodadvantage at this period in the training program. Film slides andfilm strips on individual vehicles projected forprogressively decreas-ing periods of time are excellent means of presenting "total form"recognition and should be utilized to themaximum extent theavail-abilityofthese aidspermits.d. Formore advanced training, film slides, strips, or photographsprojected for very short time intervals can be utilized. These sametraining aids can be used for test purposes. Where the necessaryprojection equipment is not available, the ingenious recognitioninstructor will improvise his own equipment, such as an opaqueprojector (reflectoscope) made of box, bulbs, old lenses, cardboardtube, etc.

    8. TURRET tank2597.The turret i s a dome-shaped or box-shaped structure on the topofthe vehicle. It usually carries the main armament-machine guns,37-mm gun, 75-mm gun, 105-mm gun, and various other calibers asexplained in paragraph 10. Distinguishing features of the turret(figs.1and2) are:

    a. Position on hull. (1) Well forward as on the Russianmedium tankT34.(2) Just forward ofcenteras on mostU. S.tanks.(3) Near thecenteras on the German PzKw III.(4) Neartherearas on theGerman 6-wheeled armored car.(5) One onesideofthehullason theU.S.medium tankM3.b. Single or multipleturrets. Most tanks havesingle turrets. However, there are somewith multiple turrets. These maybe-(1) Sideby side.(2) Oneabove the other.(3) In line.c. Cupola. This is a small, turretlike projection on top ofthe

turret. It may have a machine gun projecting from it. See U. S.mediumtankM3.d. Shape. Theshape of the turret may be-(1) Cylindrical. See Japanese lightarmored car2597.(2) Cone-shaped. With top of cone cutoff. SeeJapanese medium

    10. ARMAMENTThe armament varies from machine guns to large cannon. Inturreted vehicles the heaviest armament is normally in the turret.

Look for thefollowing:a. Short barrel, as on theU. S. 75-mm howitzer motorcarriage M8.b. Medium barrel, as on the U. S. medium tank M4.c. Long barrel, as on the German Pz Kw VI. Note that some ofthe German tanks also have a muzzle brake, a large ringlike deviceon the end ofthe barrel.d. A cannon in a turretusually has a coaxial machinegun mountedwith it.e. A machine gun may be mounted in the hull. See U. S. lighttank M5A1 and medium tank M4.f. An antiaircraft machine gun may be mounted on the turret, or

it may be on a pedestal or othermount in turretless vehicles.g. Sizeofgun, that is, length and diameter ofbarrel.

Many vehicles may be definitely recognized by the traction. How-ever, donot make traction a standard meansofrecognition as wheelsor tracks will often be obscured by grass ordefilade. The followingare recognition features:a. Wheeled vehicles. (1) Two, three, four, or more wheelson a side; that is, four-wheeled, six-wheeled, eight-wheeled, orevenmore.(2) Are wheels evenly or unevenly spaced? Most six-wheeled

vehicles will have fourwheels close together near the rear.(3) Are wheels large or small? Mostwill be large.

    b. Part-track vehicles. These may be half-track, threetrack, or track may be even larger. On some German vehifront wheels can be lifted and the vehicle run as a full-trackNote thefollowing:(1) Frontwheels.(2) Length of track as compared to length ofvehiclec(3) Number and size ofbogi wheels.c. Full-track vehicles. Note the following(1) Number ofbogiewheels.(2) Spacing of bogies and bogie wheels.(3) Are wheels mounted singlyor in pairs?(4) Arewheels large or small?(5) Is partof tractioncovered byan armored skirt?

The above paragraphs cover description ofthe various partvehicle. Other features to note area. Size ofvehicle.

    b. Height ofsilhouette.c. Positionofradioantenna.d. National markings. Do not depend on national markinAtured tanks may be used againstyou or the enemy may use your ovwnnationalmarkings.e. When viewing a vehicle from above, note(1) Position of turret.(2) Length of gun.(3) Shadows, which willoftenshow more than direct vievehicles.
