The Stratux (Like the Appareo Stratus only cheaper)ADS-B weather and traffic on your iPad for $61 (and some sweat equity)

Yes, you can build a working portable ADS-B receiver with parts ordered off Amazon. No, it’s not “just as good as an Appareo Stratus 2S.” And, yes, it will work with ForeFlight — at least for now.

The minimum Stratux would be a Pi Zero for $5, one SDR for $25, a Wi-Fi dongle for $10, a USB power supply and cable for $21. Download the Stratux image and tape the whole thing together.

That’ll get you just ADS-B weather and traffic on 978 (no GPS, AHRS or direct 1090 traffic) for $61, plus an hour of setup.

Even if you go all out and get the better Raspberry Pi B kit ($60), two Nano SDRs (two at $40), custom antennas ($10), GPS/AHRS ($40), a UPS power system for the Pi ($45), jumpers for wiring ($5) and a nice case ($30), that’s still only $220 in parts for an open source ADS-B in system with all the perks.

Compared to $549 for the cheaper Status 1S and $899 for the deluxe 2S model.

New FAA Compliance Philosophy in a Nutshell(I really think they are serious about this.)

Compliance is required and expected from all

The FAA assumes you want to comply with the rules(They realize that some of their rules, products, and procedures need a little modification and or improvement)

The greatest risk to Safety comes from those:unwilling to comply

knowingly violate rules or take inappropriate risksunable to comply

lack the fundamental skills or qualifications required

The ENFORCEMENT tool is for those unwilling or unableEnforcement is a means to rehabilitate and achieve compliance

The FAA wants to use the most appropriate action to resolve the Safety issue (not see how many violations they can issue).

The new focus of the FAA is to :achieve rapid complianceeliminate the Safety riskensure positive and permanent changes

Simple mistakes, lack of understanding, or diminished skills will earn you “training” or will drive improvements to training or procedures.

This new FAA Compliance Philosophy is starting to resemble the USAF.

The objective is to prevent future mishaps …Not see how many pilots you can bust.

If a training syllabus, ops procedure, or data product is causing or contributing to the possibility of a mishap, then it needs to be changed (improved).

The FAA is currently:Training all employees on the NEW Compliance Philosophy.

Using data (not the calendar) to determine when and where to conduct surveillance and inspections.

Emphasizing to employees that critical thinking and judgment are expected in order to determine the most appropriate tools needed to permanently fix the problem.

Self-disclosure of errors (and the reason WHY) will help the FAA identify products, processes, and procedures that they need to fix.

CAUTION: older FAA employees might have a hard time accepting and complying with the new FAA Compliance Philosophy mindset.

Two new (revised) Advisory Circulars.The revised ACs explain and update available weather information, policy and products, provide new information on weather phenomena critical to aviation, and update modern concepts of meteorology and radar meteorology.

A new graphical weather product from the U.S. National Weather Service’s Aviation Weather Center is one answer to the question of how pilots may determine cloud top forecasts once the text-based area forecast is discontinued.

The new product is a computer-modeled forecast of cloud top heights, depicted using color-shaded contours at specific intervals. Forecasts are provided at select time step intervals.AC 00-6B Aviation Weather … AC 00-45H Aviation Weather Services.

This Month Lack of Proficiency was responsible for11 of the 13 Deaths.

Stay focused on your own proficiency.

Keep doing what you’ve been doing (CAP is doing GOOD).

Consider adding a little emphasis to Bold Face procedures.

Regarding ATC requests to "call a number" after landing.

Have a plan BEFORE this happens.

If you are asked to call a number after landing, consider:

Then … at your discretion, call the number requested by ATC
