A s an English and Communications major in college, I lived by the

department’s motto: Keep It Simple, Stupid. The “KISS” philosophy was meant to help us remember to write simple. Don’t make stories complicated, or people won’t read them. Don’t over complicate a layout design, because people will be distracted and miss your message.

I like simple. I like to try and keep things simple. I still follow the KISS philosophy in most of the things I do. In quilting, for example, I keep my designs simple. Actually, when it gets too busy, it starts to stress me out. Over the years, God has taught me that simplicity is one of His gifts to me to keep my brain (and spirit!) happy.

Simple Grace. You’ve probably heard this catch phrase going around the church, especially through mission and our stewardship committees. We often like to imagine that grace is complicated. I recall a scene from the great movie, A League of Their Own, where Tom Hanks is coaching a woman’s baseball team during World War II and he leans into Gina Davis’ character and says, “(Baseball) is supposed to be hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it.” I also recall reading a biography on President

Theodore Roosevelt, who said, “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty.”

I challenge that. I’d like to sit down in a room with Teddy and ask him (if I could get a word in edgewise…he was famous for filling the room just with his personality) if that applies to everything. I do think working for something makes me value it more. But even if something takes work, I don’t think it has to be complicated.

One of my favorite stories in the bible is in 2 Kings 5. A commander of the Aram army, Naaman, has a skin condition (maybe leprosy. The bible basically uses leprosy to cover every skin condition under one code name). His servants tell him about a Hebrew prophet named Eiljah who can help him. Naaman goes to Elijah, who doesn’t even answer the door. Elijah’s servant answers the door and gives him the instructions to go wash seven times in the Jordan River and he’ll

(Continued on page 4)

From the Pastor Rev. Rebecca Mallozzi

Page 4: Flyer Winter 2018 - Amazon S3...Rob Clark, Jack Decker, Jim DePhillips III, Lisa Heineman, Linda Kennington, Bruce Luff, Tim Melnick, Diane Millick, Erik Walker, Chuck Waters, Cathy

be clean. First, Naaman is put out because Elijah couldn’t bother to answer the door for him. A COMMANDER. Secondly, Naaman is put out because it’s too simple. He says in verse 11, “I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy.” And the servant – I love that it’s a servant – calls him to task. “Master, if it was complicated, would you have done it right away? Are you going to not do it just because it’s easy?” Naaman finally does what Elijah tells him to do: washes seven times in the Jordan River. And voilà: he’s made clean!

I think we all need someone to give us that jolt sometimes: to remind us that just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s not important or worthy of our time. Not everything has to be complicated. Grace isn’t complicated.

It really isn’t. Simple Grace means we don’t worry if people paid us or look like us. We don’t worry about what it costs us or if we get anything back. We don’t worry if

someone ever steps foot in our church doors. We just love each other. We simply show one another grace. We simply give you what you need, whether it’s a simple hug, or a thank you. We simply give you a hot dog. We simply welcome you. We simply ask you how your day is going. We simply appreciate you for being you.

Don’t make it complicated. Don’t create hoops where they aren’t any hoops.

Here’s what I want you to do: At the bottom of this page, you’ll see a space you can tear out or cut out (feel free to tear. Keep it simple!). Take out the piece that says “simple grace” and put it somewhere you’ll see it. Put it on your fridge. Keep it in your wallet. Tape to your laptop or your car dash board. Remember to keep it simple, sisters and brothers. Simply love one another because Jesus loved us first. I hope seeing it reminds you to not just read it, but to live it. Live simple grace.

Simply in His common calling,

Pastor Becki

A Reminder from the Financial Secretary

A ll contributions to the church that are to be counted as 2018 contributions must be received at the church no later than

Monday, January 7. Any donations made after that even if the check is dated 2018, will be counted toward your 2019 contributions. The Financial Secretary will be printing and sending out your 2018 tax statements on January 8 and 9. Thank you for your understanding.

Special Congregational Meeting

T here will be a congregational meeting on December 16, 2018 immediately following

worship (to begin no earlier than 11:00 AM) for the purpose of electing the slate of officers and Nominating Committee members, and to vote on the pastor's terms of call. New officers will be installed in January and are invited to attend the December 11 session meeting.

Annual Report—Copies of the report will be made available the week prior to the Annual Congregational Meeting. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2018.

Pocket Directory—During the month of December, the proof copy of the church directory can be found on a table in the Narthex. Please review your family’s listing to be sure it is correct. A red pen should be tucked in the pocket for your use in making any corrections. Please consider adding cell phone numbers and email addresses. And how about email addresses for your teen children? The directory will be printed and made available during January.

Office Hours—The church office is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 2:00 PM... never on a Friday. Phone messages left and emails sent on Fridays are not answered until the following Monday. The office will be closed on the following dates during the winter season:

December 24, 25, 31 January 1, 16*, 21 February 17

Newsletter Deadline—The next newsletter to be published is the Spring 2019 edition. The deadline is February 17, 2019. The newsletter editor is not responsible for providing information on committees’ upcoming events, only sharing what has been provided. If you feel that something has been overlooked, please contact the appropriate committee’s chairperson.

Office Work Space—The long counter in the church office is a work space, not temporary storage space. When baskets, boxes and bags are placed on the counter, they are in the way of the weekly work flow. Please find other spots to place them, (like unlocked classrooms) and let those who are retrieving them know where to look. And please, follow up to make sure they’ve been retrieved.

2018-2019 Youth Group

T he hope of this year’s Youth Group is to grow together spiritually, build

relationships with one another, and engage our community with love. Planned youth

activities include retreats, 30-Hour Famine, game nights, and mission trip and immersion opportunities for us to be the change we want to see in the world. Following in the way of Jesus, we will also reflect on what it means to love God and our neighbors.

Every Sunday night, Middle School Youth Group will meet from 5:00-7:00 pm. Middle School Youth Group is open to all youth in grades 6-8. We will meet for activities, games, devotions, and then we will have dinner together from 6:30-7:00pm.

High School Youth Group will meet from 6:30-8:30 pm. High School youth group is open to all youth in grades 9-12. Join us at 6:30pm for dinner, then we will meet to talk about tough topics and reflect on faith and life together. This year, High Schoolers will also have immersion opportunities, work camp, and the PCUSA Youth Triennium! This is going to be an awesome year!

Each week, we will have a shared meal together from 6:30-7:00 whether it be bring a brown bag meal, pizza, or cooking a meal together. Adult mentors and parents will be invited to sponsor or cook a meal to support our youth. It is a lovely way to let the youth know that you care and support their work and time together. There will be a signup genius to make the schedule for sponsoring a dinner quick and easy, and you can work around your schedule. Adult Volunteers are always needed!

Peace, Joanne

Reading Resolutions E very January, many Christians resolve to read the entire Bible in one year. That’s a

worthy goal, but God doesn’t require us to read a certain number of verses or chapters per day. Instead, he tells us to simply be in his Word — and thus be with him — so he can grow our faith, light our path and assure us of his love and forgiveness. God’s Word is a precious gift, but we need to “unwrap” it! F.B. Meyer offers this helpful advice for a new year of discovering (and rediscovering!) Scripture: “Read the Bible, not as a newspaper, but as a home letter. If a cluster of heavenly fruit hangs within reach, gather it. If a promise lies upon the page as a blank check, cash it. If a prayer is recorded, appropriate it and launch it as a feathered arrow from the bow of your desire. If an example of holiness gleams before you, ask God to do as much for you. If the truth is revealed … entreat that its brilliance may ever irradiate … your life.”

Give thanks in all circumstances

I Thessalonians 5:18

T he words Thank You are two very powerful and motivating words. They let us know when we are doing things right, and that we are appreciated. They can

never be overused! Whenever notes are received, we try to make sure that our church members get to read them. Here is what was received since the last newsletter:

Thank you for the generous donation from Faith Presbyterian to EPNHN

through the Peace offering. The support and concern for others in the community from the congregation is greatly appreciated. ~Anne Zayaitz

Thank you for your continued support for the Emmaus Food Bank! Your generosity greatly benefits many families in our shared community of Emmaus. ~Leah Jarrett, on behalf of Bethel Bible Fellowship Church

Sandy Missmer left a phone message expressing his appreciation for the

cards and prayers during what he calls a tough time in his life. He has a new phone number. If you would like to update your directory, please contact the church office.

Dear Mission Committee,

On behalf of the staff and students of Lincoln Elementary School, I would like to thank you and the congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church of Emmaus, for the generous contribution of $500 to our Angel Network Program. With your donations throughout the years, we have been able to provide families with groceries, gift cards, clothing, school supplies, school photo packages, musical instrument rentals, and fees associated with field trips, as well as after-school opportunities.

As always, your donation to our Angel Network will be extremely helpful to us as we strive to meet the needs of the Lincoln families. We truly could not help the families at our school without your support.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness and continued generosity!

Daybreak Outreach

F aith Church cooks and serves a meal at Daybreak on the second Monday of each month, from 1:30 to 4:30pm. Over the past couple of years, we’ve lost many of

our cookie bakers. Can you find the time to bake a batch or two and drop them off by noon on that day?

Daybreak is a drop-in center for people suffering from mental illness, who may or may not also be homeless.

Helpers are also needed, especially cooks, from approx. 1:30 to 4:30pm. (Carpool leaves from the church!)

Drop off cookies in the church kitchen by noon of that Monday. Because of possible nut allergies, please mark cookies that have nuts in them. Sugar-free cookies are also appreciated.

Please consider helping out. A Volunteer Guide has been put together to make it easy for those who wonder what volunteering entails. The book can be found on the bookshelf behind the secretary’s desk in the church office. If you have questions needing the human touch, speak to Carolyn Baittinger or Zona Farmer.

The upcoming dates for Daybreak are:

Christmas Joy Offering: THE PERFECT GIFT

E ach year during the Advent and Christmas season, we turn our eyes to Bethlehem and celebrate the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. By giving to the

Christmas Joy Offering, you honor this gift by providing assistance to current and retired church workers in their time of need and developing our future leaders at Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges.

The Christmas Joy Offering will be received and dedicated on Dec. 23, 2018.

The offering is used to help fund the following programs:

The Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions

In 2017, the Assistance Program distributed over 800 grants and approximately $1.1 million to qualifying pastors, missionaries, other church workers, and their families.

The Assistance Program offers assistance to folks in one of these three categories:

Racial Ethnic Leadership Development

The Christmas Joy Offering provides opportunities for deserving students to attend Presbyterian-related racial ethnic colleges and schools. In 2017 $1 million were used to provide education and leadership development skills at Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges.

In 2017, Faith Presbyterian Church received $3,113.00, with 48 participants, for the Christmas Joy Offering.

Do you think we can be JOYFUL givers and “top” that amount?

I n mid-September, our church hosted our 10th “Consign for Good” sale! We had another successful event which resulted in a donation of $2,000 to East Penn

Neighbors Helping Neighbors. In mid-November, we held a “Stuff a Bag” sale in an effort to reduce our donated clothing inventory. It was another great event for the community—allowing us to replenish our bank account for advertising and other expenses which may be needed prior to our Spring, 2019 sale.

So, please save the dates for our next sale in 2019 (registration will be open in February)!

April 4 (Thursday Pre-Sale): 5:30 PM-7:30 PM (by invitation only)

April 5 (Friday) 8:00 AM-12:00 PM and 5:00 PM-8:00 PM

April 6 (Saturday) 8:00 AM-11:00 AM; Half Price Sale 11:30 AM-1:00 PM (consignor selected items only)

Visit/bookmark www.consignforgood.org for information on how to consign and

other updates about our sales. You can contact us by e-mail (and/or ask to join our e-mail list) at [email protected]. Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Consignforgoodemmaus/. Many thanks to our congregation for hours of volunteering and for spreading the word about this endeavor!

Broad Street Ministry immersion mission trip Saturday, November 17, 2018

R adical Hospitality, Community Engagement, and learning to Fail Forward were the

themes of the day for the 38 people involved in an intergenerational field trip down at Broad Street Ministry in Philadelphia. Faith Church and The Barn partnered together to experience how this innovative worshipping community serves the most vulnerable in downtown Philadelphia. Please enjoy the photos on the next few pages. If you want to learn more, speak to the Youth Groups, Jack Decker, or Joanne Marchetto

A Word from the Deacons

A s many of you know, the florist we have used for the past several years, George’s Greenhouse, closed unexpectedly and suddenly this past August. We

began using The Posey Patch in Macungie as our new florist. However with this change came a new cost of over $25 per bouquet.

After much deliberation and discussion, the Deacons have decided to move to using silk flower arrangements for our weekly Sunday flowers beginning in 2019. We are making this change for several reasons. The cost per bouquet for fresh flowers each week has become expensive, and the cost for unfilled slots comes directly out of the Deacon budget. Quite understandably, it has become difficult to fill in all of the available slots each week. Silk flower arrangements will be beautiful, cost considerably less money, and can be used for multiple Sundays. Congregation members will still have an opportunity to dedicate a bouquet for a particular Sunday. Of course, we will continue to have the annual poinsettia plants for the Christmas season as well as the traditional spring flowers for Easter.

The board of Deacons appreciate and thank you for your understanding. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact your Deacon.

A re you or a loved one in need of home medical equipment? The church has some medical equipment that is available for members to borrow, such as wheelchairs,

crutches, shower chairs, commode, etc. If you have a need, please see your Deacon.

Joy Somehow, not only for Christmas, But all the long year through, The joy that you give to others, Is the joy that comes back to you. And the more you spend in blessing The poor and lonely and sad, The more of your heart’s possessing Returns to you glad.

—John Greenleaf Whittier

“Once we have seen [Jesus] in a stable, we can never be sure where he will appear or to what lengths he will go or to what ludicrous depths of self-humiliation he will descend in his wild pursuit of men.” —Frederick Buechner

“Beautiful music ... is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” —Martin Luther

“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.” —Martin Luther King Jr.

Sharing Session Highlights

E ach month, a different elder is responsible for writing up the highlights of Session’s monthly

meeting...not the official minutes, but the bullet points. Our office admin will make them available in the following ways:

A single hard copy will be hung on a bulletin board next to Fellowship Hall.

A few bullet pointed items will be included in a weekly announcement email blast, which will include a link to the full submission.

Those who have a hard time reading a computer monitor, or don’t receive the email blast, can have a hard copy provided for them. Simply request one from the church office.

This change may take a little getting used to, but Lynda is willing to help everyone through the glitches, if there are any.

SCRIP Program The Scrip order for December is one week early

to allow time for Christmas gift cards to arrive expeditiously.

T hank you to all the participants in the Great Lakes SCRIP and Weis gift card programs. Profits for the year 2018 have been designated to the Operating

Budget again this year. When 2019 arrives, Session will decide where to direct these funds going forward. Please help this program continue to provide funds to the church by making purchases using SCRIP.

The total amount raised so far in 2018 is $407.53. The next deadlines are December 2, January 13, and February 10. Faith Church uses the scrip fundraising program, allowing church members to

raise money for the church. Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards.

You simply purchase gift cards from the church at face value. The cards are then ordered by the church’s Scrip coordinator at a reduced price. The difference is an instant rebate for the church, which is then used to defray the costs of items that Session has approved of in advance. In the past, the rebates have helped to pay for blacktop repair and lighting improvement.

Help the church make this program a bigger success!! For a complete list of retailers or for more information check the table in the Fellowship Hall or www.glscrip.com. Contact Lynda Scheirer at [email protected] if you have any logistical questions.

A little more about SCRIP

W hen we began the SCRIP Program several years ago, there were many more participants than we currently have. What do you need to know to convince

you to make this a part of your giving to the church? As the SCRIP coordinator, I’d like to help make the program a bigger success. The amount raised, listed above, is the result of a very small group of dedicated participants. If just a few more would give it a go, we could easily double or triple the amount.

If one person purchases a $100 gift card from a vendor giving the church a 10% reduced price, it’s an instant rebate to the church in the amount of $10. If ten people do it, it’s $100. If that happens every month, it’s $1,200!

Let’s do this! Together!
