A Closer Look at Explicit Teaching in Writing Workshop through the Mini Lesson.

Monday, March 30th, 2015 (Spring Break)

8:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Daniel’s Den, Webster Middle School

How do I know what to teach next? We’ll study efficient protocols for researching students, understanding text types of the common core through genre studies and thinking about the process of writing in order to effectively design mini lessons that are geared toward the needs of your specific students in order to have an authentic, student-centered curriculum. We’ll also consider how this particular structure of teaching supports learning and memory, as evidenced by recent neurological studies. Finally, we’ll learn practical tips for supporting language learners by using this structure of whole group teaching as a first step in helping all students experience success in workshop classrooms. Participants will leave with templates to help them plan in their classrooms, several drafts of mini lessons they can apply in their classrooms this spring.

Materials: Handout, starter kit of texts as possible mentor text selections to be used across the year paid for by ESC West.

Closer Look at Teaching Reading Comprehension and Speaking & Listening Through Interactive Read Aloud.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015 (Spring Break)

8:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Daniel’s Den, Webster Middle School

This component of a balanced literacy classroom is an essential part of a well-designed English Language Arts curriculum. We’ll begin with an overview of all the components of a balanced literacy philosophy, we’ll define various aspects of the teaching of reading, we’ll study the speaking and listening standards of the common core, experience interactive read aloud first hand, and learn how to plan efficiently and effectively for this daily component as a means to support all students in your classroom. We’ll consider researching students so that our plans are geared to what students need support in. We’ll look across the year in strategic curriculum mapping to consider how this component supports work in the fall, winter and spring as your curriculum calendar progresses through each text type of the common core and genre studies to support each. Finally, we’ll learn how this component supports language learners in our classrooms as one of the many parts of a balanced literacy classroom.

Materials: Handout, starter kit of texts as possible read aloud selections to be used across the year.

ESC West Benchmark: Students will collaborate on rigorous

Common Core aligned tasks, answering purposeful

questions, using academic language and citing evidence.

I’ve taught the mini lesson, now what? (for experienced Workshop practitioners only)

Monday, April 6th (School Holiday)8:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Daniel’s Den, Webster Middle School

*Note: This day is designed for educators already teaching a balanced literacy approach and have well-designed workshops running in their classrooms.

Workshop is designed to have differentiated instruction at its heart. On this day, we’ll begin with an overview of various structures we can choose to design the most strategic differentiated instruction for our students including: strategy lessons, book introductions, guided reading and component work. We’ll consider the research we conduct in order to know our students as individuals (running records, assessment tools, etc.). We’ll begin a study on knowing the characteristics of leveled texts so that we can support readers as they progress through levels of our classroom libraries. Participants will study several “case study” students as a way of designing a variety of small group structures to help students experience success in our classrooms. Participants are invited to bring with them their independent reading levels and conferring notes so they can apply the information from this day directly to students in their classrooms this spring. Participants will leave with a variety of note taking tools, planning templates and draft plans they can utilize in their classrooms this spring.

Materials: Teachers who are already implementing Reader’s Workshop in their classroom will be able to order $500 worth of literature to enhance your classroom library. Books will be delivered to your school.
