WHAT IS FLY ASH?
Fly ash is one of the residues generated in coal combustion facilities, and comprises the
fine particles that rise with the flue gases.
A general flow diagram of fly ash production in a dry-bottom coal-fired utility boiler
operation is presented in Fig.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Fly ash utilization has significant environmental benefits:
It increases the life of concrete roads and structures by improving concrete durability,
It helps in net reduction in energy use and greenhouse gas.
It can be used to replace or displace manufactured cement.
Reduction in amount of coal combustion products as it is used in other purposes.
Conservation of other natural resources and materials.

Chemical composition of Indian fly ash
Application
Classified and quality ensured Fly ash is used as
Performance improver in manufacturing of OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement).
Pozzolan material in manufacture of PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement).
Cementitious material used as partial replacement of cement in concrete and mortar applications.
Raw material for manufacturing of building material like clay ash bricks /cement lime ash bricks, blocks and Tiles.
Material for road embankment and construction of base course of road.
Material for back filling of open cast mines & stowing of underground mines. Light weight aggregates.
Source of plant nutrients and soil amendment in Agriculture.
Filler replacement material of paints.
Raw material for roofing sheets manufacturing.
Industrial flooring.

IMPLEMENTATION:-
Technology development and demonstration
Facilitation and hand holding for the multiplier effects
Technology development and demonstration:-
Few photographs given below provide a glimpse of the demonstrations:
-
Upper dam of Ghatghar Pumped Storage First fly ash embankment in the
Schemeconstructed with RCC country (Okhla fly over, New Delhi)
( 65% replacement of cement with fly ash)
Reclamation of saline soils using fly ash Cabbage at Dodhar, U.P. on
(75% savings in Gypsum) fly ash amended soils
Demonstration of medium concentration ash Floriculture at ash ponds
slurry conveying ( 50% by weight) at Dadri
-
Sintered aggregated (75-85% fly ash) Dwelling units on ash pond Facilitation and hand holding for the multiplier effects:-
The technology development and demonstration projects undertaken had created lot of
awareness among the stake holder agencies / individuals and many of them came forward
themselves to use the technologies developed and demonstrated for their projects.
