Notes ON THE PROGRAMBeyond the Horizon (2009) by RossanoGalante is “a dynamic compositionencompassing majestic brass fanfaresand sweeping melodic lines. The piece iscomprised of two themes that musicallypaint a picture of the Earth’s breathtak-ingly beautiful horizon.” Galante’smusical language calls for music that is“heroic & romantic,” “delicate,”“warm & lush,” and “big & beauti-

ful.” These descriptive phrases enhancethe beauty that is this composition andis visual portrayal of the horizon.Galante (b. 1967) has composed musicfor films, such as The Prince of Veniceand The Great Gabble and his compo-sitions are commissioned by ensemblesall over the country.

Dances of Galanta (1933) by ZoltánKodály is a symphonic poem compliedof dances derived from the 18th century,Verbunkos, a characteristic Hungariandance of military origin. Galanta was asmall market town in Western Hungary(now in the Czech Republic) known tothe travellers from Vienna to Budapest.Kodály spent several years of his child-hood hearing the famous gypsy-bandplaying the Verbunkos and the Czardas. He returned to this place on his firstfolksong-collecting expedition. Dancesof Galanta recreates the sonorities ofprimitive gypsy music in terms of the

modern orchestra. The solo clarinet isvery prominent and the writing for vio-lins is quite virtuoso in the bravuramanner of Gypsy fiddling. ZoltánKodály (1882–1967) is considered amost prominent representative of theHungarian composers, along with BélaBartók, for using folk music in theirworks. The Dances of Galanta is hismost well-known orchestral composi-tions. It was transcribed for symphonicband by Jos van de Braak.

October (2000) by Eric Whitacrespeaks to the composer’s love for themonth of October: “Something aboutthe crisp autumn air and the subtlechange in light always make me a littlesentimental, and as I started to sketch Ifelt that same quiet beauty in the writ-ing.” Whitacre turned to the inspirationof such composers as Ralph VaughnWilliams and Edward Elgar to create asense of romanticism in the simple, pas-toral melodies that unfold throughout

the work. An accomplished composer, conductor and clinician, Eric Whitacre(b. 1970), has already achieved sub-stantial critical and popular acclaim, with works such as Godzilla Eats LasVegas and Ghost Train are among hismany compositions performed aroundthe world.

A musical landscape of the beautifulMediterranean coastline in southernSpain. Chord progressions common toSpanish flamenco guitarists have beencrafted in a spirited and a beautiful set-ting of three authentic folk danceforms: the corrida, the jota and thefandango. Opening with a fiery state-ment reminiscent of the traditional

bullfights a quick folk dance (Jota) fol-lows, utilizing traditional Spanish per-cussion. A lush alto saxophone solointroduces the middle section, a lyricalfolk dance (Fandango) with the fieryJota returning to conclude the piece.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) is oneof France’s most important musicians. Two of his most renowned composi-tions, The Carnival of the Animals andSymphony No. 3 serve as testimonialsto his musical grandeur. Samson etDalila is one of Saint-Saëns’ mostimportant works and the only one ofhis twelve operas that is still in therepertory. At the time of its composi-tion, it was nearly not performed at alldue to legal restrictions against stagerepresentations of Biblical subjects.First performed as an oratorio, Samsonet Dalila was staged three years laterand premiered in its present form atWeimar in 1877. Danse Bacchanale is

extracted from the third act of theopera. The Israelite hero Samson hasbeen betrayed by the seductive Philis-tine beauty Dalila, and is chained tothe pillars of the Temple of Dagon asthe philistines celebrate their victoryover the Israelites. This Danse, fast-paced, exotic, and with orientalinfluences, is the musical accompani-ment to the wild revelry. It takes placejust before Samson, calling upon theLord for one last burst of strength, brings down the mighty pillars andtumbles the temple roof, destroying hisenemies as well as himself.

Semejanzas Argentinas––a debut cre-ation by Joaquin Encinias for the youngdancers of the Tierra Adentro of NewMexico Dance Ensemble––is a suite ofFlamenco choreographies and composi-tions that explore the cultural traditionsof Argentina, through Spanish musicand dance. Journeying through awealth of Argentinian imagery, Seme-janzas Argentinas finds moments ofunique similarity between two musicaland artistic worlds, in turn illustratinga cultural relationship between Spainand Argentina not often acknowledged. The suite opens with “Sevillanas,” apopular partner dance traditionally per-

formed on the streets of Seville duringthe Andalusian capital’s April Fair.Resembling the Argentine tango in itsflirtatious partnering steps like thepasada, where man and woman passeach other in intimate proximity,“Sevillanas” finds a connectionbetween two disparate folk danceforms. Similarly, “Panaderos Flamen-cos”––a musical composition for theguitar and castanet––is a Flamenco folktune adapted for the sound of the Clas-sical Spanish guitar, a style ofguitar-playing shared by musiciansacross the Spanish-speaking world. Thedancers then perform “Alegrías,” a

JOAQUIN ENCINIAS Semejanzas Argentinas

lively dance to music originating fromthe Spanish port town of Cadíz. Chore-ographed by Flamenco master teacherJosé Galvan in 2013, “Alegrías” is per-formed here in a traditional sombrerocordobés and is full of movement remi-niscent of the tango, somehow drawingBuenos Aires and Cadíz––two portcities with an ocean between them––closer in proximity. “Alegrías” isfollowed by “Zapateado,” a masculinedance whose fast footwork wouldn’tfeel unfamiliar to a traditional Argen-

tine cowboy, the gaucho. “Zapateado,”choreographed by Roberto Lorca in1978, challenges the performers to usea long staff as a percussive instrumentas they dance, complicating this chore-ography’s rhythmic patterns to anexciting effect. Finally, “SemejanzasArgentinas” closes with a traditionalFlamenco fin de fiesta––a party of musicand improvised dance––called “Bulerías.”

Misa A Buenos Aires (Misatango) wascomposed between September of 1995and April of 1996. The premiere per-formance was given by the OrquestaSinfonica nacional de Cuba, the Choirof the Faculty of Law of the Universityof Buenos Aires and the PolyphonicTown Choir of Vicente López (choirs towhom the work is dedicated). This pre-miere featured bandoneón player JulioPane, pianist Hernan Posetti, andsoprano soloist Mariela Juni under thedirection of Fernando Alvarez.

Misatango was first recorded inLiepaja, Latvia by the Liepaja Sym-phony Chorus led by Fernando Alvarezwith bandoneón player Pablo Mainetti,Martín Palmeri on piano, and mezzo-soprano soloist Alejandra Malvino. InDecember of 2000, at the request ofMaestro Mario Benzecry, a new sym-phonic arrangement was premiered bythe Coros Facultad de Derecho of theUniversidad de Buenos Aires. This con-cert was broadcasted throughout thecountry by Channel 7 via UBA TV.

Misatango has been performed inArgentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador,Chile, the United States, Israel and inmany European countries under thedirection of prestigious conductors such

as Fernando Alvarez, Mario Benzecry,Nestor Andrenacci, Nestor Zadoff,Joseph Prats, Ligia Amadio, EberhardMetternich, Michel Piquernal, ThomasKammel, Roberto Luvini, AlejandroRutty, and many others. Misatango hasalso been programmed on various festi-vals: the 2013 Festival Internazionalede Musica e Arte Sacre in Rome (byCoro de la Catedral de Koln) and the2014 Festival C’est pas Classique inNice, France (by Choeur PACA).

From two important musical experi-ences in my personal musicalhistory—arranging tango music anddirecting choirs—the idea emerged towrite a work that somehow integratesthese two experiences that developedindependently.

It was always my intention to arrangetango for choral groups, attempting tomaintain the “essence” of the genre. The existing choral repertory lackedneither “a cappella” nor accompaniedtango arrangements, but while previousarrangements were sometimes accept-able, they have not been satisfactory.Though the technical and expressivepossibilities of choral voices is great, forsome reason it is difficult to achieve theprecision that the tango genre requires.

You who sit at theright hand of the Father, have mercyupon us.For You are alone are the Holy One, youalone the Lord, you alone the MostHigh, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spiritin the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Taking this into account, my objectivein this composition was to maintain theharmonic language, rhythms, melodicdesigns, and all of the characteristics oftango within the orchestral score, thusallowing the chorus to have full libertyto just “sing the mass.”

My decision to use the Latin text couldbe explained by the place of the Latinlanguage among centuries of choralmusic and the universal connection tothe language. But I have to say that mydecision also carries the weight of myaesthetic requirement: Latin gives thework a reserved, esoteric qualitywhich, from my point of view, has

much to do with tango—especially pro-gressive tango.

Thank you to all of the singers who par-ticipated in this incredibleconcert—thanks for your energy, passionand enthusiasm you demonstrate in themoment. Thank you to the directors ofeach chorus, who in some cases havebeen dear friends to me along my musi-cal journey throughout the years. Thanks to DCINY for having chosenMisa A Buenos Aires for the 2015 con-cert series and for promoting this concertto such heights.
