What is Influenza? Very highly contagious viral infection of
the respiratory passages. Often causes fever, severe aching. Often causes epidemics

SymptomsSome symptoms include Runny or stuffy nose Cough and/or sore throat A fever of 100 F or higher fever Not many people get a fever when having a
cold Body aches and/or headaches. Fatigue Most common in children, Nausea, vomiting,
and/or diarrhea

What causes the Flu? Flu viruses travel through air when a
person sneezes, coughs or talks. A person can get the viruses by simply
touching an object. Influenza viruses are constantly
changing

Treatment You can treat flu symptoms with and without
medication. But it won’t make you any less contagious

The Seasonal Flu Seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory
illness caused by flu virus. Approximately 5-20% residents get the
flu each year. Flu season begins from early October
and as late May.

Who is at risk? Children (younger than 2) Senior (65 and older) People with low immune system Changes to a pregnant woman’s immune
system can make her more sensitive for the flu. The flu can bring her pregnancy at great risk.
People with disabilities Travelers and people living aboard.

Types of Flu Viruses H7N9 (Avian Influenza A Virus): been
detected in poulrty in China, people and birds in the U.S
H3N2V: does not usually infect people or spread among people.
H1N1(Swine Flu): it’s now a human seasonal flu that circulates in pigs
H5N1 (Bird Flu): serious outbreaks in domestic poultry
