How an External Gear Pump Works
1. As the gears come out of mesh, they create expanding volume on the inlet side of the pump. Liquid flows into the cavity and is trapped by the gear teeth as they rotate.
2. Liquid travels around the interior of the casing in the pockets between the teeth and the casing (referred to as “locks”). It does not pass between the gears.
3. The meshing of the gears forces liquid through the outlet port under pressure.
The displacement is directly proportional with speed.
Basic Features
• Gear pumps use close running clearances to seal suction from discharge pressure and provide increasing volumetric efficiency with increasing viscosity
– Flow constant over varying pressures– Flow directly proportional to speed– Power directly proportional to speed– Efficiency increases with velocity

Sleeve Bearings
GR Bearing Considerations• Roller Bearings: Standard Configurations
– Clean Viscous Liquid up to 500° F• Bronze Sleeve Bearings
– Dirty services above 100SSU/below 350° F• Babbitt Impregnated Carbon
– Clean services below 100SSU and below 350° F• Antimony Impregnated Carbon
– Dirty services above 350° F– All services above 500° F
GR Sealing Consideration• Packed Box: Standard Configuration

• Inboard Bearing Configuration– Limited to 240° F max
• All Applications above 300° F– Refer to Factor / FSD
GR Pressure Consideration• Cast Iron GR
– 10 psig suction below 75 SSU– 50 psig suction above 75 SSU
• Cast Steel GR– 50 psi suction above 200 SSU– NOT recommended below 200 SSU
• Insurok Wear Plates– 50 psig suction / 250° F limit
• Double Stuffing Box Configuration– 100 psi suction limit
GAX/GR Selling Features
• Higher Speed Capability– 1800 RPM at lower
viscosities and smaller sizes
– Reduced need for gearboxes, couplings, and guards
– Higher system efficiency without gearbox
GAX/GR Selling Features
• Back Pull-Out Design– Quick access– Undistributed system for
inspections– Ease of maintenance
GAX/GR Concerns• Applications to Carefully Apply:
– Solidification: steam jacketing is a must– Low NPSHA: reduce speed to gain NPSHR– High Temperatures: review bearings/seals
• Applications to Avoid:– Low viscosity/Lubricity: <30SSU– Vertical Lift Applications: not self-primer– Solids handling– Shear sensitive liquids– Corrosive liquids
Market
• GI Applications– Fluid circulation– Supply to burner and heater sets– Slop oil and waster transfer
• OEM Applications– Lube and seal oil supply– Filtering and metering systems– Proprietary equipment systems
• Oil Applications– Asphalt transfer– Heavy oil/grease transfer– Barge, train, tank, truck loading
• Chemical Applications– Highly viscous polymers– Cellulose acetate– Feedstocks
$200M+ market in North America annuallyOverwhelmingly distributor-driven
GAX/GR Selection Process• Information Required:
– Viscosity (max and min)– Flow rate desired– Differential pressure desired (or max acceptable by system)– NPSH available
• Steps:1. Gear Pumps notsupported by Affinity.2. GAX and GR SelectionTools available on PumpNet(Distributor Portal)
