Parts of a Flower
• These are the main parts of a flower.
Petals• Petals attract insects and help to
protect the other parts of the flower.
Sepals
• Sepals protect the flower while it is still a bud.
• Sepals are usually green or brown.
Nectary
• The nectaries make nectar.• They are in the centre of the flower.• Nectar is a sweet substance, which
insects drink to give them energy.
Carpel• The carpel is the female part o the flower where seeds are
made.
• It has three parts: stigma, style and ovary.
– The stigma is sticky to catch the pollen.
– The style holds up the stigma.
– The ovary contains the ovules (or “eggs”).
Stamen• The stamens are the male parts of the flower.
• Stamens make pollen.
• Pollen is a yellow powder that is needed to make a new plant.
• Each stamen has two parts: the anther and the filament:
– The anther produces the pollen.
– The filament holds the anther up.
Receptacle
• The receptacle is where the parts of the flower are attached.
