Obituary

George Marshall Martin, was born in Abbeville, S.C. on September 23, 1950, the eleventh of twelve children born to the late Lillian and Millie Martin. He went to be with the Lord on February 14, 2019. George attended public schools in McCormick and Abbeville. He later attended Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood where he completed degrees in welding, pipefitting and Industrial Technology. He served in the army from 1970 through 1973, including a stint in Viet Nam. Following his time in the army, George began working at the Sandy Springs plant of Michelin Tire Company. He worked there for 30 years, retiring in 2009. After retiring from Michelin, George put his love for others and his desire to be a blessing to them into practice by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He really enjoyed this work and was blessed by the friendships that he formed, both with other volunteers as well as with home recipients. George was a caring man who loved the Lord, his family and those that the Lord placed in his path. He was a member of Golden View Baptist Church but was also part of the Freedom Center church family. Left to celebrate the life he lived and to cherish his memory are his devoted wife Mamie, two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Chris Robinson and Toya and Rico Brownlee. He also leaves six grandchildren; Julia, Jasmine, Kristen and Chris Robinson, Amber Crawford and Rico Brownlee, Jr. He also leaves seven siblings, Sara Horne, Alice Sparrow, Easter Cannon, Pauline Martin, Margaret (Phillip) Harrison, Walter (Beautine) Martin, and Thomas (Minnie) Martin; two brothers-in-law, James (Ruth) and George (Carletta) Marshall; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; a number of “adopted children"; and other relatives and friends. George was preceded in death by four siblings; Theodore, Cleo and James Martin and Beatrice Martin Norman.

Not, How Did He Die, But How Did He Live?

Not how did he die, but how did he live?

Not what did he gain, but what did he give?

These are the units to measure the worth

Of a man, regardless of birth.

Not, what was his church, or what was his creed?

But had he befriended those really in need?

Was he ever ready, with words of good cheer?

To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?

Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,

But how many were sorry when he passed away.
