The Florida Artist Group was incorporated as a non-profitorganization of professional artist painters, sculptors andphotographers who have received national and statewiderecognition and whose works contribute significantly to theexhibitions. The purpose of the group is to attain the higheststandards of creative art.

Since 1949 the Florida Artist Group has held an AnnualSymposium & Exhibition each year in a different Florida city.Education and other cultural aims are advocated at thesemeetings through lectures, panel discussions and artistdemonstrations opened to the public.

All members are eligible to participate in the Annual FLAGExhibition which is juried for awards and on occasion, due tospace requirements, is a juried show. In addition to theSymposium & Exhibition, Area Exhibitions are sponsoredthroughout the year. The nature of these follow the characterof the annual meeting which provide an opportunity toparticipate in different venues bringing the membership closertogether. Our goal is to contribute to the cultural atmosphereof our state. Each juror is a distinguished artist, educator, curator, ormuseum director. Among them Sam Gilliam who has achievedinternational recognition as a member of the WashingtonColor School, Dr. Donald Kuspit one of America's mostdistinguished art critics, David C. Levy, Director of theCorcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, Dr. John Angeline,Professor of Parsons School of Design and recipient of thePeggy Guggenheim Fellowship Award, Donaldson F. It is exciting when I reflect on the fact that The

Florida Artist Group is sixty years old. We are

the oldest continually operating artist's organiza-

tion in our great state. To be celebrating on scenic

Sanibel Island just adds to the excitement.

We all greatly appreciate the Officers and Staff of BIG ARTS for their

hospitality and help in hosting our 2010 Symposium. A symposium and

the organization behind it doesn't just happen, it takes lots of dedicated

work. I want to publicly express my personal appreciation to Joan Furia

Klutch, FLAG Vice President and Area Chair for Area VII and the

members in Area VII for the hard work and enthusiasm in organizing

and making the Symposium and Exhibition a reality. I also want to

express my appreciation to our Treasurer Roberta Schofield for her

diligence in keeping track of dues and registration monies for our

membership. The treasurer's job requires hours of selfless effort and I

applaud her dedication to our organization.

Our juror and special guest for the Symposium, Dan Welden is a

nationally recognized artist and printmaker. We are indebted to him for

agreeing to jury our exhibition, for presenting a valuable workshop in

solar printmaking, and for participating in a critique and panel

discussion. The 60th Symposium is certainly a memorable experience

for all of us.

A final thank you to the spectacular FLAG artists whose work is the

centerpiece of our Symposium. I know that visitors to Sanibel Island and

BIG ARTS will find the work worthwhile. We invite everyone to visit our

Florida Artist Group web site to learn more about our great organization:

“ Solitude”

Dan Welden is a painter / printmak-er, art educator, inventor and author. After receiving his B.A. and M.A.degrees from Adelphi University, hestudied lithography primarily withKurt Lohwasser in Munich, Germany.A veteran of over 65 solo exhibitions, he is knownprimarily for his hybrid works on paper involvingcombinations of print, paint and drawing techniques. Asan educator, he has directed a summer program inFlorence, Italy, since 1999. He has traveled extensively offering workshops all over theworld, Greece, and Belgium. As a Master Printmaker, hehas printed for many artists in his own studio, includingWillem and Elaine de Kooning, Richard Vaux, Dan Fla-vin, Eric Fischl, and David Salle. He is co-author of thebook, Printmaking in the Sun, and recently received aVogelstein grant to produce the the development of theacidless, water wash technique of Solarplate Etching.

Dan Welden on Solarplate

After finishing his master's degree in the U.S., Welden, "dissatisfiedwith his situation and longing to learn," decided to go to Munich forfurther study. According to Welden, Munich's reputation for music, artand beer was a great lure. Thus trained on both sides of the Atlantic,Welden returned to the States, eventually making his home and studioin Sag Harbor, Long Island, a couple of hours outside of New York City.Besides succeeding in his own career as an artist, he has printed forartists like the de Koonings, Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, Jasper Johns,Robert Motherwell, Fischl, Salle, and Flavin among many others. Hekindly agreed to talk to World Printmakers.Q: We would be fascinated to know when and how and in whatcontext the Solarplate idea occurred to you?A: Kurt Lohwasser showed me a polymer plate and explained its use inindustry. I took it and 'changed' its use from the relief principal to theintaglio technique. It was no great stroke of genius to try something newwith a material, it was, however fortunate timing. People were beginningto become more aware of health and safety issues revolving around tradi-tional printmaking techniques.Q: What do you see as the principal advantages of Solarplatetechniques? A: Instead of using acids, solvents and grounds for etching,Solarplatesuse sunlight and water. The same results and more, are obtained. Inaddition, the plates are more spontaneous, direct and quicker than tradi-tional techniques. Printmakers also approach the technique more with alithographer's directness than the etchers multi state method. The artistcan also create with the positive image in mind, not the reverse, or negativesense of the intaglio plate. The speed at which the printmaker can pullimpressions is also a great attribute. Since the backing of the Solarplate issteel, it can be inked on a magnetic table creating a solid, stationarysurface for quick, simple wiping.Q: What do you forsee for Solarplate printmaking in the future?iA: I don't have any expectations. I would hope, however, that printmakingin general would make progress in the future. I would love to see more andmore-active presses in schools and communities and younger peoplegetting their hands into ink. If Solarplate can help stimulate the activity,

Fred's dedication to his teachingwas his life's passion. The

privilege of working withcreative minds is one that

he always treasured. Heinspired many to pursue a career

in art simply by his life example. His enthusiasm for creating art

was boundless and was reflectedby his continuous

production of art for over sixty years.

A regionalist, an abstract expressionist,a journeyman painter he was. He neverrefused anyone’s request to do a

painting or drawing. He designed and painted detailed illustrationsof Stetson campus buildings for the president’s Christmas card forthirty years. Stetson now owns this collection of thirty originalwatercolors. Fred was one of the founders of the Florida WatercolorSociety. He was elected to the American Watercolor Society in 1958and became a Life Member. He was also a charter member of theFlorida Artist Group and the National Watercolor Honor Society.

Fred had two one-man art shows in New York City, two inFlorence, Italy and one in London. He was honored with shows atOhio Wesleyan University and West Virginia Wesleyan. Hispaintings are collected by several museums permanentcollections. Fred loved taking his art students to Italy duringStetsons’ mini semester in January. Fred retired from Stetson in1989 after thirty years severing as chairman. He continuedteaching painting workshops around the country.

Fred was a great father to his six children and loved family life. His many talents included his love of sports, the theatre, he actedand directed plays, golf and music namely playing the trumpet
