APRIL is National Minority Health & Health Disparities Month In accordance with this year’s Minority Health Month theme:  Prevention is Power: Taking Action for  Health Equity. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) are focused on highlighting preven- tion strategies and actions leading to Health Equity. During April, we mark National Minority Health Month by raising awareness about the health dispari- ties that continue to affect minority populations. The Florida Department of Health in Franklin -Gulf Coun- ties Closing the Gap Program hosted a Day of Dia- logue on Minority Health event this past February that supported the CDC’s theme Prevention is Power. The Day of Dialogue on Minority Health event brought church and faith-  based leaders together from North Florida counties with health organizations, university faculty, and community leaders to identify health con- cerns and share best practices and develop action  plans among minority populations. The events consist of health screenings, exhibitors, guest speakers, and healthy lunch. DOH-Franklin Coastal Cleanup Day The Florida Department of Health in Franklin County Staff conducted a Coastal Cleanup on St. George Island on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. The crew assembled at Lighthouse Park and then pro- ceeded to comb a mile long section of the beach. They had found some interesting items along with  bottles, straws, bottles caps, cigarette butts, and debris washed ashore. The group had also received help from a few beachgoers who happened to see our efforts and brought trash and debris to put in our trash bags and thanked us for what we were doing. The crew collected nine pounds of trash from the cleanup.

FITNESS CHALLENGE 2015 

After twelve weeks of determination and hard work, the Commu

nity Health Improvement Partners would like to congratulate allof the Fitness Challenge 2015 Participants.

What an exciting finish to this most recent Community FitnessChallenge! I applaud all of you who made the commitment to liv

a healthier life—through diet, exercise, or involvement in yourcommunity.

Mr. Tydron Wynn was the overall Community Champion ofthis Challenge. He lost 13.5% of his body weight. His common

sense approach to the Fitness Challenge was to stop some reallydestructive habits and replace them with healthy choices that he

enjoys.

APRIL 2015-CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

The Florida Department of Health in Franklin County Healthy Start/Healthy Family

Team would like for staff to wear please dress in blue on April 10, 2015, to honor ChildAbuse Prevention Month. There will be a photo op in front of the health department’s

sign in Apalachicola. You will see pinwheels planted around the county. Through re-search we know so much more than we used to about how children’s brains develop and

the potential lifelong results of adverse childhood experiences. For more informationabout the research related to CDC studies please visit www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/ace. Otherinformation about the development of children’s brain can be found a

www.zerotothree.org, and also in our offices. As the month rolls on there will be moreinformation to come.

Franklin County SWAT

SWAT Advisor Pamela Lewis, Apalachicola Bay Charter School SWAT, and the Tobacco

Prevention Specialist conducted a presentation called “Ditching the Snuff for Better Stuff”.

This presentation depicts a ‘burial’ of smokeless tobacco products in the courtyard of the

ABC school on Monday, March 23, 2015.

We welcome Mrs. Shelia Martin our newest faith- based SWAT advisor shown below with

SWAT students as they participate in SWAT’s Annual Beach Butts Search on St. George

Island.

 National Infant Immunization Week is an a

nual observance to promote the benefits immunizations and to improve the health

children two years old or younger. For moreasons to vaccinate, talk to your child

In the event of a tornado, hurricane or other disaster BE PREPARED! There are many things to consider while preparing for a disaster.

Two essential things to remember is WATER AND FOOD. Below you will find a checklist to consider to assist with your preparedness

Emergency Preparedness Checklist Regarding Water and Food

Water— Two gallons per person per day for 1 week. A good location to store water is in a detached garage (single story) or away

from any heavy structure that may topple over. Remember your water heater in your house is typically 50 gallons and may be

used as a secondary (only) water supply if your dwelling survives. 

Food— Each person of family should have on hand an emergency food supply other than your weekly store bought food. You

may consider purchasing freeze dried, dehydrated, MRES (ready to eat meals) type of foods that have an extremely long shelf life

that are nutritious and can be stored in the same area for accessibility. Plan for a minimum of one week of food per person. Don’t

forget a can opener!

Cooking—Barbecue 40 lbs charcoal, and two cans of starter fluid. Or a propane unit with 20 lb container of propane. A propane

camp stove may also be used.

Store the following items for use when preparing your checklist: Pot, Pan, Kitchen knife, silverware, Styrofoam cups, water proof
