Orlando-based Florida Citrus Sports remains committed to being one of the most dynamic, sports entertainment organizations in the industry. What began as a small group of folks happy just to put on a college bowl game 63 years ago has now evolved into one of the top producers and managers of sporting events in the country.

Orlando is blessed with a tradition-rich stadium and a sports community that is eager to embrace everything that comes to town. Since the inception of the Tangerine Bowl in 1947, the bowl game has grown, the stadium has expanded and the community has matured into one of the premier destinations for marquee national and international sporting events.

The Tangerine Bowl (today’s Capital One Bowl) history has a tradition of great players and coaches. Throughout its over 60 years of existence the game has gradually grown into a New Year’s Day tradition. In the early years, the game was known as “The Little Bowl WithThe Big Heart” for its reputation of charitable giving. Small schools like Catawba, Sul Ross State and East Texas State were rewarded with trips to Orlando and the Tangerine Bowl in the 1940s and 50s. In the late 60s, the game evolved and began to host mid-major schools like East Carolina, Houston and Miami University (OH).

With the birth of Orlando’s major theme park attractions, the popularity of the city as a tourist destination exploded and the Tangerine Bowl grew with it. By the late 70s the bowl hosted college football’s powerhouses. Since that time, the game has hosted at least one team from all six conferences that comprise today’s Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

Crowds swelled as the major teams began to come to Orlando on a regular basis. The bowl experienced 11 consecutive sellouts between 1980 and 1991. The game also changed names to the Florida Citrus Bowl in 1983 thanks to a sponsorship agreement between the organization and the Florida Department of Citrus.

Under the Florida Citrus Bowl moniker the game and organization experienced an unprecedented run. In the midst of the consecutive sellout streak, the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium was expanded to its present day capacity of 65,438 permanent seats in 1989-90. With additional temporary seating the stadium hosted crowds of over 70,000 on several occasions including 1991 when the bowl hosted it’s first and only contest with National Championship implications.

Georgia Tech, behind the play of quarterback Shawn Jones, crushed Nebraska 45-21 in the 1991 game to earn the UPI (Coaches Poll) National Championship for the Yellow Jackets.

Two years later the bowl entered into agreements with the Big Ten and SEC to annually bring teams from those two conferences to Orlando.

Thanks to the outstanding match-up between the Big Ten and SEC, the game is one of the most competitive bowls in the country. Six of the last nine games have been decided by seven points or less, which includes the bowl’s first overtime game in 2004.

After two years as the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl, the game’s relationship with the Florida Department of Citrus came to an end. The game, which is annually broadcast on ABC, became the Capital One Bowl.

During the bowl game’s rise to national prominence, the Florida Citrus Sports organization began to grow and expand as well. The list of major football games grew as Florida Citrus Sports organized regular season games between teams like Florida State and Notre Dame. Preseason NFL games also popped up on the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium calendar.

The organization had a hand in bringing World Cup and Olympic soccer to Orlando in the mid 1990s. In fact, Orlando is one of a handful of venues in the world to host both matches in the World Cup (1994) and the Olympic Games (1996). In 1999, the U.S. Women returned to play a friendly match against Brazil, a match where Mia Hamm etched her name again into the record books by scoring her 108th international goal and becoming the greatest goal scorer in soccer history.

In 1997, the Florida Classic was added to the Florida Citrus Sports calendar. The Florida Classic is the nation’s largest historically black college football game. Each year Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman bring their fierce rivalry to Orlando for a full week of activities before the game. The Classic is the highlight of each school’s season and has become a major community event. In 2003, a crowd of 73,358 attended - the largest recorded crowd in stadium history and another Florida Classic attendance record.

From January 1999 through January 2005, Florida Citrus Sports organized the Gridiron Classic College All-Star Game. In its seven years of existence, the game matched players with ties to the state of Florida against players from the rest of the United States. The Gridiron Classic used a North vs. South format and was played during its last two years at The Villages, Fla. The game was enthusiastically embraced by the community of approximately 36,000 people and was called The Villages Gridiron Classic. The game was a sellout in its first year at The Villages with over 12,000 people in attendance. Proceeds from The Villages Gridiron Classic benefited charitable programs including the Buoniconti Fund to cure spinal cord paralysis.

What today is known as the Champs Sports Bowl originated in 1990 as the Blockbuster Bowl in Miami, Florida. The first game on December 28, 1990 featured two legendary coaches as Bobby Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles defeated Joe Paterno’s Pen State Nittany Lions, 24-17. In 2001, Florida Citrus Sports moved the game to Orlando. and in honor of the city’s rich bowl history renamed the game the Tangerine Bowl, now called the Champs Sports Bowl since 2004. While the game has seen numerous sponsors (and thus name changes) since 1990 none has been more dedicated than Champs Sports. After two years as the title sponsor, the Bradenton, Florida based company upped its financial commitment. The game was then able to maintain its selection order position in the expanded ACC and add a top-level Big Ten team to the matchup.
