Monday’s Minute with Schnellenberger
Preseason
Training camp has been marred with the
normal injuries that teams get at this time of
year but has been very fruitful for us. We
have made good strides. If those strides are
good enough to come out of Nebraska with
a win is questionable. It is an opportunity
that the kids look forward to, the kids look
forward to and hopefully everybody will
have a great time watching a great football
game.
Camp
The weather has been outstanding. We
haven’t even had a tropical storm. With the
exception of this last weekend it has been a
fine time to play football.
Long Schedule
If you go back as far as I do a nine game
schedule was the standard of the day, yes it
has gotten to be quite long. However, if you
coached in the National Football League this
is a real shorty compared to that. A 12-game
schedule is about right for our players. They
are prepared for that and will get ready in a
hurry for a 13th game, I assure you.
Memories of Nebraska
The first game that we played in the Orange
Bowl back in 1983 I have a lot of memories.
The one we played when I was at
Oklahoma, I don’t have memories hardly at
all. Coach Osborne and I go back a long
way together, I assume we were, when I was
with Coach Bryant. Two games in the
Orange Bowl with Nebraska. Since that time
we saw each other a lot when we were trav-
eling the CFA circuit. I have a great deal of
respect for him as does everybody in the
nation. He is one of the fine ambassadors for
the game of college football. It was just too
bad both of us couldn’t win the ’83 game
because both teams played well enough to
win. It was an exciting day. Us being able to
make the two-point play which led to a
major dynasty.
At Oklahoma we played Nebraska at the
exact wrong time. They were an outstanding
football team. As I look back at the score, I
didn’t remember until I looked it up, I took
some hope because they were undefeated
and, won the national championship and
scored as high as 77 points and were a truly
outstanding football team.
This game will feature a team that I’m sure
has a goal of winning the national champi-
onship and has the talent to make that dream
become a reality. We face them in the open-
ing game of the 2009 season which will
catch the Nebraska fans at their best. It is
going to be a monumental struggle for us,
but our players are looking forward to that
struggle, just as we did last year and came
up very short. We go into their holding out
the hope that the situation might develop that
we have a chance to be in the ball game late
in the game and that something good could
happen to us. Obviously, the odds are
against that, never the less our football team
is going to Nebraska with strength in their
heart and with a wide open attitude. I’m
hopeful we distinguish ourselves with what-
ever the final score might be.

At Florida Atlantic
Ten years…ten years in the making. In
April of 1998 Howard Schnellenberger was
asked to consider a project, weigh the facts,
research the possibilities and explore a com-
munity’s interest in supporting the addition of
football to FAU’s sports roster.
By 2008 Head Coach Howard
Schnellenberger had welcomed the first
recruiting class; climbed the ranks of Division
I-AA, including a national semi-final appear-
ance; joined a conference and began playing
football in the country’s highest classification,
the Bowl Subdivision; and grabbed a league
title and two bowl championships to add to his
collection.
When you consider all the "firsts" that
Florida Atlantic University's football team has
accomplished, it is hard to
believe. What may be even more
difficult to comprehend is that
legendary Head Coach Howard
Schnellenberger accomplished a
"first" as well in 2007. When the
74-year-old program builder was
named 2007 Sun Belt Coach of
the Year, it marked the first time
he had earned a conference
award. Schnellenberger has res-
urrected two programs from vir-
tual extinction. Neither was
affiliated with a conference.
He joined the FAU staff
May 1, 1998, with an unheard-
of opportunity: build a collegiate
football team from scratch. In
January of 1999 the Board of
Regents approved FAU adding
football. Twenty-five recruits
signed in his first FAU class.
Since that time each recruiting
class has been better than the
last, each schedule is more diffi-
cult than the last and each mile-
stone is one step closer to
Schnellenberger’s dream: build
the best football team possible in the heart of
paradise.
When the team took the field for its first
practice, Aug. 12, 2000, 164 players were
dressed. FAU played its first scrimmage Sept.
23, 2000, and took to the field Sept. 1, 2001. It
only took two games for FAU to have its first
upset, defeating the No. 22 ranked team in the
country, 31-28. FAU holds the record for the
fastest start-up program to earn a Division I-A
victory, is the fastest program to reach the
Division I-AA playoffs and is the fastest start
up program to be invited to bowl game.
Proving it wasn’t a fluke, the Owls made a
repeat appearance in 2008 becoming the only
team in the state of Florida to have back-to-
back bowl victories in 2007 and 2008. FAU
also became the first Sun Belt Conference
team to win back-to-back bowl games. What
makes the bowl victories more impressive is
that FAU became bowl eligible, in its rise to
Division I-A status in 2006 therefore the Owls
have captured a bowl victory in two of the
three seasons that they have been a part of the
Bowl Sub Division.
Schnellenberger, the 2003 Sports Network
South Coach of the Year, began this assent by
playing the best teams that would schedule the
fledgling Owls. The Owls stormed into
Hawaii, with a hurricane hitting Florida's
coastline at game time, and handed the
Warriors their only home field loss in 2004,
defeating a bowl participant in just the 36th
game of the program's existence. The team
then defeated perennial Sun Belt power North
Texas the next week. FAU rattled off five-con-
secutive road victories to enter the 2004
home schedule 5-0. The Owls finished
their first transitional season 9-3, and bid
farewell to the senior class with a third-
consecutive "Shula Bowl victory over
FIU. 2005 was the first full season of
Division I-A play, facing Kansas,
Oklahoma State at home, and Minnesota
and Louisville on the road. The young
squad put together several outstanding
performances sending Kansas into the
locker room with a 9-7 lead, Oklahoma
State with a 13-3 margin at the half, and
Louisville, who entered the game ranked
No. 14 at game time, with a 10-point
cushion, 20-10. Florida Atlantic began
2006 picked as the second worst team in
the country. With this as motivation, the
Owls used what Schnellenberger called
advanced training, its non-conference
schedule, to finish with a 4-3 Sun Belt
record and were in the hunt for the Sun
Belt title deep into the season. The team
jumped from a preseason eighth place fin-
ish to third in the Sun Belt. Both the
offense and defense came together with
one goal in 2007: win the SBC. From
January to December the focus remained
constant and the accolades continued to roll in
culminating with a bowl game invitation,
becoming not only the youngest program to

All-Time Series
receive a bowl invitation but to earn a victory.
The Owls would enter 2008 as the SBC’s
favorite in just its eighth season of playing
football. The team would struggle early and
rally late to prove they were indeed a team on
the rise.
For the National Title
Schnellenberger has been part of four colle-
giate national championships. His 1983 Miami
Hurricanes won the school's first title, defeat-
ing Nebraska in the 50th Orange Bowl. He
was offensive coordinator for Paul "Bear"
Bryant at Alabama when the Crimson Tide
won championships in 1961, 1964 and 1965.
In the NFL
Schnellenberger has been part of seven NFL
playoff teams and was part of two Super Bowl
championship staffs. He helped the 1972
Miami Dolphins to the NFL's only undefeated
(17-0) season. Schnellenberger has recruited
and/or coached former pros Jim Kelly, Bernie
Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Jay Gruden,
Browning Nagle, and Jeff Brohm (FAU’s quar-
terback coach), and stars such as Michael
Irvin, Brian and Bennie Blades, offensive tack-
les Bruce Armstrong and Jerry Crafts; fullback
Carwell Gardner; wide receiver Earnest
Givins; defensive end Joe Johnson, defensive
tackle Ted Washington; cornerback Ray
Buchanan; and defensive tackle Mike Flores.
Three of his former assistants were on the staff
of the Dallas Cowboys during their rise to con-
secutive Super Bowl Titles.
At Miami
Schnellenberger took over a University of
Miami program that was nearing extinction in
1979. He installed a pro-style attack with quar-
terback Jim Kelly and led Miami to an Orange
Bowl bid and the national championship four
years later. His teams lost only two home
games in five years (22-2) while laying the
groundwork for a program that went on to win
three more national titles in the next seven sea-
sons.
At Louisville
A native of Louisville, Schnellenberger
returned in 1985 to build a college football
contender. His top team finished 10-1-1 and
defeated Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl, the high-
light of the most successful decade in
Louisville football history. His teams played a
coast-to-cost schedule against the top confer-
ences in the nation and produced victories over
such teams as Texas (1), Alabama (1),
Michigan State (1), North Carolina (1),
Virginia (1), NC State (1), West Virginia (1),
Boston College (1), Arizona State (2), and
Pittsburgh (4). The Schnellenberger Era also
generated support for the University's 42,000-
seat, on-campus stadium.
Personal
Howard Schnellenberger learned his football
tactics as a player for "Bear" Bryant and
Blanton Collier at the University of Kentucky.
He served as an assistant to Collier at
Kentucky and Bryant at Alabama.
Schnellenberger then moved on to pro ball as
an assistant to George Allen (Rams) and Don
Shula (Dolphins). He was head coach of the
Baltimore Colts from 1973 to 74. He and his
wife, Beverlee, have two sons: Stuart and Tim.
Stuart was a tight end/center on his father's
1983 national championship team. His eldest
son, Stephen, passed away March 9, 2008.
Grandchildren are Teather Ann, Joey and
Marcus.

• Howard Schnellenberger enters his ninth
season as the Owls head coach and his
11th at the University. Schnellenberger,
the 1983 National Coach of the Year, is
known as a program builder. He
resurrected the University of Miami,
culminating in UM’s first national
championship. He pulled the University
of Louisville from the Nation’s forgotten
into a top-10 team. He has built FAU
from scratch and is currently listed No.
12, by the NCAA, in victories by active
FBS head coaches (148-125-3, .542).
• Rusty Smith will return for his third
season as an Owl starter. The senior from
Jacksonville, FL holds nearly every FAU
passing record. He was the 2007 Sun Belt
Player of the Year and the 2008 Preseason
player of the year. He guided the Owls to
back-to-back bowl victories and earned
bowl game MVP honors in both.
• As a start-up program, the Owls soared
through the Division I-AA ranks setting
records along the way. FAU declared its
intent for Bowl Subdivision status in
2003, began the move in 2004 and 2005
and was officially eligible to play for a
bowl opportunity in 2006. In the three
seasons that FAU has held full Bowl
Subdivision status, the Owls have played
in two bowl games.
• The state of Florida is arguably the best
state in the country for college football,
earning the National Championship Title
two of the last three seasons. In that time
FAU is the only team in the state to win
bowl games in both 2007 and 2008.
Since 2006 when FAU officially became
Bowl Eligible:
UF (35-6, .854) 2-1 bowl games
USF (26-13, .667) 2-1 bowl games
FSU (23-16, .589) 2-1 bowl games
FAU (20-18, .526) 2-0 bowl games
Miami (19-19, 500) 1-1 bowl games
UCF (18-20, .474) 0-1 bowl games
FIU (6-30, .167) no bowl games
• Florida Atlantic is the only team in Sun
Belt Conference history to win back-to-
back bowl games.
• Senior Frantz Joseph anchored the 2007
and 2008 FAU defense. Joseph led the
SBC in tackles both seasons and
concluded his three-year career ranked
No. 17 by the NCAA in Career Tackles
Per Game at 9.35. FAU will showcase
three new linebackers in 2009 with
Michael Lockley expecting to step in at
MLB.
• The Owls will return three-year starters at
both wide receiver positions and at tight
end. The receiving corp’s careers are
parallel with quarterback Rusty Smith as
all started on the scout team together in
2005. The group will also welcome the
return of tight end Jason Harmon whose
explosive ability sparked the 2007 season.
Harmon along with the return of 2008
starter Jamari Grant will provide a two-
tight end set that will be hard to defend.
• William Rose will return to the backfield
as the most dominant fullback in the Sun
Belt Conference. Rose averages 5.0 yards
per carry and 6.9 yards per reception. He
has 11 career scores.
• The offensive line will be anchored by
four-year starter David Matlock. Matlock
has had knee surgeries each of the last
two off seasons but has yet to miss time
on the field. Matlock has been part of an
offensive line that has provided protection
for the prolific passing attack as well as
for a program that despite sharing ground
duties between three rushers saw its first
individual gain 1,000 plus yards in a
single-season.
• The defense will look to Josh Savidge for
its experienced senior leadership. Savidge
drew his first start as a true freshman
against Oklahoma State in Land Shark
Stadium. He played every game that
followed until a knee injury in the fourth
game of his junior season forced him to
the sideline. He returned in 2008 to play
and start in every game. Savidge recorded
28 tackles, including five for a loss of 12
yards.
Alfred Morris: 3.0+ club member 3-of-4
semesters at FAU. Morris is an Exercise
Science and Health Promotion major.
Keegan Peterson: Also played in one confer-
ence tournament for FAU tennis. Excels in the
classroom and has maintained above a 3.0
since joining the team. Intent is dental school.
Jeff Van Camp: His father played football at
Louisville, but not while Schnellenberger was
there. His father also was a professional
wrestler. His name was Lord Humongous
Paul Muse: Transferred from Clemson. In
three seasons with the Owls he has not only
battled back from injuries but has trained for a
new position each year: tight end, offensive
lineman and now defensive lineman. Muse
was also a little league opponent of FAU
quarterback Rusty Smith.
Chris Bonner: Chris’ mother attended college
on a track scholarship. His sister attended col-
lege on a basketball scholarship and he is now
attending college through a football scholar-
ship.
David Matlock: Has had two acl surgeries,
one following each of the last two seasons.
Kyle Watkins; surpasses him with a total of
six.
Ed Alexander: began his career as a walk-on
and while his work ethic helped secure a spot
on the team his attention to detail is what pro-
pelled him into the starting line-up. This detail
oriented characteristic is also helpful as a
mechanical engineering major. Teammate
Brent Harstad and fellow defensive back is a
civil engineering major. And defensive back
Austin Jensen, an exercise science and health
promotion major has earned a 3.0 or better 3-
of-4 semesters he as been at FAU. Rod
Huggins also excels academically with a 3.0+
gpa 3-of-6 semesters.
Wharton School: At any one time 2-of-4
defensive lineman could be from the Wharton
School. Dino Cox, a Finance major, was the
first to see playing time, playing as a true
freshman. Jamere Johnson began playing in
‘08 as a redshirt freshman.
Redshirt Freshman Jordan Sessa is an Eagle
Scout, one of the highest honors you can
receive as a boy scout. Sessa is a civil engi-
neering major and through his first year of
college maintained above a 3.7 gpa.
Both Alex Fick and Ed Wertepny are geolo-
gy majors. Fick has been a member of the
3.0+ honor roll every semester and holds
above a 3.5 gpa.
Malik Eugene; will step into the starting role
in ‘09. He has spent his first three years at
FAU working on special teams and has made
time to work on a dual major in management
and marketing. Eugene is also a regular on the
3.0+ list. Ryan Wischnefski is another who
will step into a starting job. Wischnefski has
earned a 3.0+ 5-of-6 semesters and holds
nearly a 3.5 gpa.
Schnellenberger versus opposing coaches:
Howard Schnellenberger is the third oldest
Bowl Subdivision Coach. Penn State’s Joe
Paterno (12/21/1926) is the oldest. Bobby
Bowden, from Florida State (11/8/1929) is the
second oldest. FAU’s Schnellenberger is
third (3/16/34). On the flip side, when FAU
plays at FIU December 5, 2009 the Owls will
play a team led by Mario Cristobal who is
the third youngest coach. Christobal will be
39 this season (9/24/1970).
Schnellenberger and win totals: FAU Head
Coach Howard Schnellenberger entered the
2009 season with 148 victories, 12th national-
ly among active FBS head coaches. Troy’s
Larry Blakeney entered the 2009 season no.
13 with 143 wins.
