Welcome!An eco-friendly life in the city. Sustainably grown foods. Clean energy. A healthy living environment.
Increasing numbers of people are interested in these themes and try to live accordingly in their
everyday lives. These themes have even more undiscovered options and opportunities. They are also
urgent if you consider the fact that by 2050 68% of the global population will live in cities.
The International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 will show us an optimistic future. It
provides a stage for those that think big both nationally and internationally, innovators and intelligent
types with green solutions that will make our cities increasingly liveable and sustainable as well as more
fun.
Moreover, the Floriade will offer an appealing platform for trade delegations, industry professionals,
business clubs thereby attracting a wide-ranging international audience. The seventh Dutch edition of
the International Horticultural Expo will again have a lot to offer. This living laboratory stimulates your
senses. You will be touched by what you see, smell and taste. The expo is an extraordinary experience.
Inspiring conferences, workshops and exhibitions will be provided, alongside surprising tasting sessions
and an exciting art and cultural programme. Floriade energises and inspires.
Naturally, all this takes place in a beautiful, green environment. We don’t refer to it as ‘the greenest day
out’ for nothing. For six months, from 14 April 2022 onwards, Almere will be the stage for the Floriade
Expo 2022.
A unique day out for two million visitors as well as a unique opportunity for participants, sponsors
or suppliers to share their contributions to the International Horticultural Expo with the world. The
opportunities are boundless. This brochure intends to give you a glimpse of Floriade’s green, energetic,
promising, innovative world. Stay inspired!

Floriade Expo 2022’s founders: joining forces for sustainable, liveable cities

[Dutch horticulture council], the
Municipality of Almere and the
Province of Flevoland, Floriade Expo
2022’s three founders, have joined
forces with a single, communal
objective: to find systemic innovations
and solutions for sustainable, liveable
cities.
How we aim to do so? By bringing
various groups together from around
the globe. They will present their best
horticultural practices to consumers
and colleagues.
Future urban districts
The International Horticultural
Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022
provides Almere with much more
than a unique, international
event. After the Expo, Floriade
site will be redeveloped into
Hortus: a green, healthy urban
district for the future.

Floriade’s theme Growing Green Cities presents the creative,
green, sustainable solutions required to make this a reality.
This theme is more important than ever. By 2050, some 68%
of the global population will live in cities on a mere 2% of the
earth’s surface area.*

healthier lives. We will do so using four
sub-themes:
Growing Green Cities

Green cities are liveable cities. But how do you make
built-up cities greener? Immerse yourself in the
arboretum’s greenery: a living catalogue of trees and
plants. Every species has a demonstrable role it could
play in the cities of the future. A great place for your
organisation to share its knowledge.
Food production is no longer the countryside’s
prerogative. It is our pleasure, together with our
participants and sponsors, to present solutions
in the field of experimental agriculture and
horticulture, urban agriculture, artificially produced
food, nutrition, health and sustainable agriculture.

participate in society for as long as possible.
Floriade Expo 2022 reveals the search for clean
air, water and soil to help you feel in top shape
both physically and mentally.
Sustainable energy solutions are indispensable.
Particularly as the expanding population’s energy
requirements are also increasing. Floriade Expo 2022 will
show visitors new inventions for generating, storing and
saving energy.

The Floriade park will be a celebration of green
and sustainable technology. New technologies for
greenery, food, energy and health will be researched
and implemented at this living laboratory. Visitors
will be touched by what they see, smell and taste.
The park consists of permanent elements and
expo-specific ones. All contribute to Floriade’s four
sub-themes: Greening the City, Feeding the City,
Healthying the City and Energising the City. Inspiring
gardens, conferences, workshops and exhibitions
will be mixed with impressive attractions, surprising
tasting sessions, art and culture. The site will be full
of energy and action. Naturally, all in wonderful,
green surroundings.

The Arboretum Always green

will be an alphabetically
organised tree and plant
encyclopaedia that you can
walk through.

arboretum extra unique
is that all the trees and
plants contribute to a
healthy, green city.
Real estatePermanent space for learning, meeting, caring
An important, permanent part of Floriade Expo 2022 is
the real estate that will become part of the new, green
urban district Hortus. For instance, Aeres Hogeschool
Almere [a university of applied science] located on
the Flevo Campus, will – starting in the 2021 – 2022
academic year – provide a healthy, inspiring learning
and working environment for students and staff. The
Food Forum Pavilion will become the meeting place
for, among others, producers, students and researchers
collaborating on innovative plans for sustainable future
food supplies. The Flores building, an eye catcher that
serves a variety of commercial purposes during the
expo will subsequently be sustainably converted into an
apartment block.

InfrastructureRe-using bridges and concrete, thereby integrating greenery
Green bridges are a must in tomorrow’s green city. The
Bruggencampus [bridge campus] Flevoland will display
two bridges during the expo constructed from waste
flows from Almere. The two bridges are part of the new
urban district Hortus’ infrastructure.

Cable car A ride to the future
An 850-metre cable car link
provides a fast, sustainable
connection between the
southern and northern parts of
the Floriade park. The attraction
not only provides an amazing
view, but also represents an
excellent opportunity to study
the sustainability potential of
urban cable cars.

Art and cultureA park full of energy and action
Floriade Expo 2022 will provide art and a wide-
ranging cultural programme. Exhibitions, live
music from classical to jazz, entertainment and
orchestras. The park will be full of energy and
action.
Alongside a daily theatre and music programme,
visitors will also be able to enjoy (environmental)
art and cinema. Parts of the programme are
specifically for children. For instance, we will be
building a woodland theatre on the Utopia island
where we will create a fun children’s play. There
will also be five very special play areas spread
across the Floriade site.
Food outlets and shoppingSomething for everyone
There are plenty of opportunities for every
visitor to grab a bite or a drink. A range of
restaurants, food trucks and tastings will
offer local products, healthy snacks and
meals. And, for the shoppers among us, there
will be plenty of places to get a Floriade Expo
2022 souvenir.

Unmissable innovators from around the globe
Floriade Expo 2022 provides the opportunity to introduce two
million visitors to innovations for sustainable cities. National
and international participants will showcase their concepts for
working towards green, healthy cities where sustainability and
liveability are of paramount importance. Floriade Expo 2022 will
provide visitors with an introduction to:

Dutch horticultureSee, smell and taste
Dutch horticulture will present innovations and
solutions for sustainable, liveable cities. Visitors
will experience horticulture and have their senses
stimulated by a huge variety of products. Produce
horticulture for example will use tasting sessions
to enable visitors to taste fresh vegetables
and fruit. Their visual cortices will enjoy the
wonderful floriculture. Growers from around
the Netherlands will have sent in trees, bushes,
perennials and flower bulbs. These will all be part
of the arboretum’s planting and contribute to
sustainable, healthy cities. Furthermore, attention
will be paid to sustainable production, innovation
and smart utilisation of the means of production.
Kascomplex A high-tech experience
The Kascomplex or greenhouse complex is the
place for Dutch horticulture in the broadest sense
of the term to present itself. The Kascomplex will
represent a journey through horticulture. The
170-metre long greenhouse will be subdivided
into five parts: the Reception, a High-tech
Greenhouse, an Experiential Greenhouse, a
Technology Innovation Centre and a Greenhouse
Restaurant. All-in-all a wonderful stage for the
global presentation of your products.
Agroforestry Where forest and agriculture meet
Agroforestry is a centuries-old form of circular
farming. Agroforestry is scarcely implemented
in the Netherlands in contrast to other European
countries. Agroforestry combines trees and
shrubs with agriculture and/or livestock farming.
This combined farming technique can have a
positive influence on biodiversity, soil fertility and
landscape appeal.
International participants
There won’t be just Dutch organisations at
Floriade Expo 2022. Some 40 countries will
participate to show off what they have in the field
of one of the expo’s sub-themes: Greening the
City, Feeding the City, Healthying the City and
Energising the City.
National pavilions will present their culture,
plants, flowers as well as local innovations and
solutions to the rest of the world. In this way we
can all inspire each other and share our cultures
during Floriade Expo 2022.

Programmes
So much information and so many ideas on a single
site is unique. Our special programmes try to
collate and provide access to knowledge.
Educational programmes for school children
The seeds for a sustainable, greener life should be
sown in the young. Local cooperations will involve
as many school children as possible in Floriade Expo
2022.
Knowledge programme for entrepreneurs, scientists and government
During Floriade Dialogues entrepreneurs, scientists
and government employees will seek the solutions
and issues they need to create the green city of
the future. The Floriade Dialogues are organised
several times a year in the run up to Floriade Expo
2022. Previous editions were held in Almere,
Amsterdam and Beijing.

Floriade Academy for students
Floriade Academy involves young talent
in the preparations for Floriade Expo
2022. Many students are involved in the
organisation as interns, do graduate work
or are engaged in practical assignments.
They all give the organisation their own
inflection and input. A unique opportunity
for young talent to be involved in a large-
scale, dynamic project organisation.
Floriade Business Club for entrepreneurs who aim to be sustainable and responsible
Floriade Business Club (FBC) is the network
for ambitious entrepreneurs who want to
grow their business and make the world a
greener place. Entrepreneurs with drive,
who want to do business in a sustainable,
responsible manner and who would love to
contribute to Floriade Expo 2022.

Floriade Expo 2022 is more than an exceptional,
international event. After it is over, the International
Horticultural Exhibition will provide Almere with a
new, green, virtually car-free urban district called
Hortus, alongside a substantial economic stimulus.
New companies and knowledge institutions will base
their operations in Almere. A good example is Flevo
Campus: a leading knowledge and innovation centre
in the field of food issues. Finally, Floriade Expo 2022
will have a lasting effect on the green, healthy city of
Almere thanks to the expansion of the A6 motorway,
the ‘greening’ of the city centre and the refurbishment
of the Almere Centrum railway station.
