DIVISION 470 - DECORATIVE SMALL CONTAINER GARDENS

CLASS: 1. FANTASY, FAIRY, or DREAM GARDEN – A portable, containerized garden scene (open or closed) planted with small-

scale, living plants and decorated with fences, trellis, paving and/or structures making it appear to be a real garden in miniature. Satisfy your desire for a Victorian arbor, putting green or jungle tree house, but on a small scale. Due to the delicate nature of the plant material, there is no requirement that all of the plants have been growing in place for any length of time, though the display should have a settled appearance. Have fun and indulge the landscape designer in you. Maximum size for stability and portability is about 2’ x 2’ (similar to a seedling flat).

2. COMBINATION PLANTING– A single container creatively designed for maximum show with a variety of compatible plantssuitable for indoor or outdoor display. Use differing leaf shapes, colors and flower forms to mimic the popular large mixed planting outdoor containers. Suggested container size is 10-16” diameter inside measurement.

3. LIVING ART PLANTING – Exhibitor-created wreath, plaque, frame, globe or similar form attractively planted with avariety of coordinated, rooted, growing plants. Other elements may be added, but living materials should predominate. Entry should be provided with a sturdy wire loop for hanging or display stand for non-hanging design.

4. PATTERNED PLANTING – An exhibitor-created container planting in which the form and colors of the many individualplants are combined into a design as in a quilt, long ago called ‘Victorian carpet bedding’. Ground-hugging and small- scale succulents work very well to form distinct patterns; but, any plant type may be used. Exhibit will be viewed from above to show the full effect of the pattern, rather than the individual plant forms. Shallow container size should be between 18”-24” across. (Also, see similar miniature design in Division 434 Class 8.)

Judging will be based on the overall design and appropriatechoice/use of the plant material.NOTE: This may be an actual garden or one only imagined and devised by the exhibitor.

2. MY HERBARIUM – An exhibitor-prepared pressed herbarium of at least ten individual plant specimens or similarcollection of various leaves or seeds, suitably mounted, identified and prepared for exhibit in folder, as a book or withsheet protectors in a notebook. Each mounted plant specimen should show the entire plant as needed foridentification. Whether using a formal press or heavily-weighted book, the age-old technique of flat, dry preservationis still scientifically important. A project guide for children at https://theherbalacademy.com/herbarium-project-for-children/ and other simple methods for this project (as well as a more complex procedures used for special scientificvalue) can be found online.
