This week you are required to complete and submit one KPOW for each of your subject areas.

Year 10 Key Piece of Work (KPOW): Use the Leonardo DiCaprio speech, you explored in lesson last, to help inspire you to respond the following writing task.

‘Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and landslides – we see more and more reports of environmental disasters affecting the world and its people every day.’ Write the text of a speech for a debate at your school or college in which you persuade young people to take more responsibility for protecting the environment.

1. Plan your ideas first (possible plan is provided below): Para 1 - Start with a description of a beautiful landscape? Start by describing a barren and empty world? Use a metaphor to help describe the issue (a dark cloud, a disease, a war etc). Para 2 - Explain what climate change is – what is happening to the world over time? Para 3 – Explore the selfish behaviour of humans and how we continue to destroy our planet – what do we do? Burn fossil fuel, deforestation, agriculture, producing cement and housing, driving cars etc. Para 4 - Think about solutions to the problem. What can you do as individual, as a community, as human beings globally? Para 5 - Call for action at the end of your piece. Consider the impact on future generations if we do not act now.

2. Write your piece (it should take you between 35-45 minutes to complete)

3. Always proofread and check your writing. Read it aloud and it will help you spot any grammatical errors

you might have made. Look at the example of an opening paragraph a student has written in response to this question. Read the success criteria in the box below. Can you identify any of the effective devices the candidate has used for effect?

When I say the word environment, what springs to mind? Does it make you think of beautiful, picturesque landscapes that we are all too familiar with whilst walking through the countryside or watching documentaries on TV? Does it make you think of the many natural wonders of the world? What about the coral reefs, mountains ranges, canyons and rainforests? You do know that they won’t last forever, right, that they are ephemeral? In fact, the way the world is rapidly changing and developing, most of the natural habitats that have become iconic in our lives may no longer remain in their current forms. Tragically, many of these wonderful habitats may one day vanish. Forever. All of the blame can certainly be directed towards human beings and their ill-informed conduct in the world entrusted to them by Mother Nature.

Y10 KPOW Success Criteria:

• PLAN - You are required to PLAN your response first and then produce at least 2 sides of A4.

• AP – ensure you meet your purpose, producing a persuasive speech.

• CD (Craft devices) – you need to use a range of PERSUASIVE DEVICES for effect (rhetorical questions, emotive language, imperative verbs, triple emphasis, repetition, effective metaphors etc.)

• AV – Use ambitious vocabulary throughout your piece.

• SS & OP – Use a range of sentence openers and sentence structures.

You should spend approximately 1-2 hours completing this piece of work, as it should demonstrate effort and

quality.

Verna has a medical condition which affects her mobility. Verna uses a walking stick to get around most of the time, but some days she needs to use a wheelchair. Verna also has asthma which has recently got much worse. She has type two diabetes. She takes medication and has a diet plan to cope with the diabetes.
