Upgrade Considerations and Timing
How long does it take end to end
• Where are you starting - 5.2? 6.2? 7.1?
• Go-live downtime limitations
o Ruins your holidays /weekends
• How many configurations and customizations have been implemented?
o Like for Like vs. Plain Vanilla
o Consider Business Process transformation
o Evaluate using ‘new’ OOTB features or using alternative methods (scripts)
• Size and complexity of Database(s)
o Data scrubbing – Utilize Archiving tools
o Industry solutions may need application edits due to added features
• Dependant on number of integration points
• Training requirements
• Team size and availability

Upgrade Considerations and Timing
• Upgrade vs. Fresh Install?
Quality of existing data – targeted data migration
• Consolidate multiple instances of Maximo?
Leverage Multi-site/Multi-Org
• Custom Reports – are you using BIRT yet?
• Don’t forget about mobilizing your workforce!
START NOW!
Average upgrade can take 3 – 12 months depending
on answers to the above questions…

Upgrade Process - Best Practices
• Can’t upgrade ‘in-place’ – need a new target environment
Infrastructure assessment
New DB instance
• Multiple Iterations (minimum 3)
TEST, TEST, TEST
Trial/Dry-run/Go-Live
Expect remediation throughout the iterations
• Incorporate end user ‘champions’ in testing
Eliminate issues early in the process
Ensures performance
Promotes early adoption
• Focus on Data migration first
Reports/UI/Integrations after you’re in the target environment
Use 7.5 Migration Manager for promoting Configuration Edits on an Upgraded database

• Be realistic about level and availability of in-house skills
• When time is running short, do not short-change the testing cycle; stickto the plan!
• Include product champions in all planning and delivery
• Factor in time for practice runs of various processes including datavalidation and loading
