Introduction
Carlsberg UK runs a fleet of more than 290 vehicles and covers over 14 million kilometres every year. It delivers to around 13 thousand accounts every week and has challenged its drivers with an ongoing efficiency programme.
As a result, the UK arm of the fourth largest beer maker in the world is now more than 9% more fuel efficient than it was at the start of the programme. Together with the introduction of the Microlise telematics solution, and sustained effort and analysis of the driving performance data, the team has made continuous improvements.
Using the Microlise tools, Carlsberg now monitors how its drivers are performing on a daily basis, with live updates available via a web portal. With visibility over how the whole fleet is performing, the team has been able to focus on different elements of driving style to make cumulative improvements.
At the beginning of the process Carlsberg began monitoring a single Key Performance Indicator (KPI). This has now expanded to multiple KPI’s as it continues to identify new and different ways to improve efficiency.
Carlsberg has a plan for future improvement with new gamification techniques coming online to create a competitive environment between drivers to encourage driving efficiency. League tables, accessible by all drivers, show individuals how they are performing comparably with the rest of the group. Positive driving behaviour is incentivised.
A lot has already been achieved – but Carlsberg’s continued improvement programme carries on.
What are the details of emissions savings achieved and evidence of how figures have been derived?
![Page 2: Fleet Hero Awards 2015 second round application form_FINAL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082907/589b9f9b1a28abd63e8b5e43/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Emissions are tracked on a Monthly Fuel & CO2 Report (see attached Document 2 – New 2015 Monthly Fuel CO2
Report). Using Microlise Kilometre per Litre (KPL) fuel usage data and monthly kilometres, Carlsberg is able to
calculate the fuel saved and the total CO2 NOT generated as a direct result of the activities undertaken. The
underlying data is captured by the Microlise telematics solution which is fitted to the entire Carlsberg fleet. These
fuel savings are benchmarked against the average for the previous year, calculated at the end of the twelve
months.
Carlsberg is now in the fifth yearc its ongoing fuel and emissions journey and so the scale of the additional savings
achieved each year are diminishing slightly. However, in real terms year on year, Carlsberg has saved 1.4m litres
of fuel since 2010, that’s 37,500 tonnes of CO2. Please see the below slide, which was presented internally on
June 15th and gives full details of cost avoidance and CO2 reductions.
Have there been any additional environmental, cost, safety or other resource benefits achieved?
Carlsberg fleet utilisation has been directly impacted by the use of Microlise reports to provide day-to-day data on
how the fleet is being used. This has been invaluable in challenging the depot fleet structure, resulting in fleet
reduction, less kilometres and less fuel usage (plus associated environmental benefits i.e. tyres, consumables
etc.).
How does the project fit in with overall fleet policy and wider business strategy and the extent to which environmental considerations form part of that strategy.

Carlsberg’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy is clear and linked directly to logistics. Below is an extract
from the Carlsberg CSR, Society & Reputation slides which represent an ongoing strategy for the company.
Logistics is listed alongside packaging, research & development, procurement and other core business activities.
The slides (Document 3 - SOCIETY and REPUTATION) underline how important sustainability and continuous
improvement are to the business. The slide below is an extract from this document.
Overview of any monitoring and reporting in place e.g. fuel use, mileage, published and overall carbon emissions.
The graph (below) is a tool that is owned by the depot senior team and reviewed by the Logistics Director weekly to
challenge depot daily performance. It monitors and displays how drivers are performing at each of Carlsberg’s
depots around the country, based on the Microlise A to G rating system. As you can see from the figure, the
performance between May and August has largely been good, with only one depot missing the target. If you would
like to review the below graph in more detail – you can view it in “Document 2 – New 2015 Monthly Fuel CO2
Report”. Also, see Document 1 as referenced above.

How do you gain or maintain staff buy-in.
Carlsberg regularly communicates directly with its drivers via national and local meetings and its in house Driver
CPC programme. The 2015 DCPC module is Eco Driving and links directly to Microlise A to G reporting.
Microlise driver and vehicle performance reports, used in conjunction with Carlsberg’s driver de-briefing, education
and training, help to reduce over-revving, harsh braking and speeding violations and eliminate unnecessary idling. It
encourages the appropriate use of cruise control & brakes and generally promotes safe and economical ‘green
band’ driving.
Through integration with Carlsberg’s CANbus’s, the Microlise tracking unit continually monitors precisely how the
truck is being driven. Based upon commonly used standard energy efficiency ratings, Microlise’s A to G grading
scheme provides a precision view of driving style.
In addition to viewing individual driver reports, Carlsberg also generates reports that group drivers together, to
represent, for instance, a specific depot or vehicle type. The information gathered is delivered in easy to
understand and interpret reports that grade individual aspects of driving style on a scale of A to G and then rolls
these up to provide an overall rating.
This grading, across all the key elements of driving style makes it very easy to identify patterns of behaviour and to
highlight problem areas that require attention and to engage drivers. Comparative ‘league tables’ can be used to
readily identify problem areas and then to drive improvements in driving style at both individual and group levels.
This also introduces an element of competition between drivers, urging them on to improve performance. By giving
the drivers their own knowledge – the power is placed in their hands and engagement is increased.
Included as part of this entry are a set of slides, presented to the business, outlining how the A to G Driving Style
Initiative has been updated for 2015 (Document 4 - 2015 A to G Driving Style Initiative). Below is an extract from
those slides giving an outline of the new focus areas for 2014 and on into 2015..

Any positive impacts outside of Carlsberg as a result of these actions e.g. impact on employees outside of work hours, customers and contractors.
Carlsberg’s drivers often talk about the way they drive the company’s vehicles and quite rightly they are proud of
their achievements in reducing fuel usage significantly. They also relate to stories where they have reduced fuel
usage at home by employing good driving style technique.
At this stage a short quote from Steve Hammond from the Carlsberg Torquay depot about the training offered by
the company, sums up the impact of the scheme on employees: “With what I have learnt from ECO driving in
Driver CPC [Carlsberg training], I now save fuel in my own car. I am an old school driver but this training has
helped me improve my driving style so that I save fuel for the company every day that I drive.” – Carslberg is
empowered to make a difference and engaged with society.
Are there any details of press or publicity coverage for the project?
In 2013 Carlsberg won a Motor Transport Training Award, which resulted in coverage within Commercial Motor and
Motor Transport. But besides this award the activities within Carsberg have been primarily internal.
