Storage Class Memory - NVMe Drives

Industry wide term for non-volatile memory devices that perform faster (~10µs) than traditional NAND SSDs (100µs), but slower than DRAM (100ns).

The price point sits between DRAM and traditional NAND. Price is significantly more expensive than traditional NAND drives.

Two major vendors in the market:

Intel 3D Xpoint memory technology in Optane drives

V8.3.1 - Distributed RAID (DRAID) Expansion

What is DRAID Expansion?• Ability to dynamically add one or more drives to an existing DRAID mdisk.

• New drives integrated, and data re-striped to maintain DRAID protection• All pools and volumes remain online and accessible during expansion

What can be added?• Between 1 and 12 drives can be added in a single operation• New drives can be used to add extra spare areas

• Stick to rough rule of 1 spare per 24 drives

What should I know?• Should maintain same or better drive “tier”

• Provisions can be made to add slower drives, but exception cases only• Added drives can be larger in capacity than existing drives

• However, effective capacity per drive is dictated by smallest member drive• It will take hours to days to complete - CLI and GUI estimate completion

• Runs in the background - capacity gets drip fed into the disk• Rebuild will take priority - expansion halts if a rebuild is needed• Expansion takes priority over copy-back operations (after a drive replacement)

What cannot be done?• Stripe geometry cannot be changed, i.e. whatever the “x+P+Q” geometry was beforehand

V8.3.1 - Cache & DRP performance enhancements

— Traditional Spectrum Virtualize model is to have each object on a different CPU core for load balancing. • Incredibly successful in large configurations

• Can be problematic for Proof of Concept tests or very small configurations with large performance requirements

— Cache performance changes in 8.3.1 have allowed a single object (volume) to make use of all CPU cores in the system.

— Has a significant impact on throughput of Data Reduction Pools. The following example improvements are measured on a FlashSystem 9150, comparing V8.3.0 with V8.3.1

• Up to 2.5X improvement DRP IOPS throughput

• Up to 50% reduction DRP read Resp. time

• Actual improvement will be different for everyone, and low end systems such as V5030 will not see as much improvement.

1. Online expansion of HyperSwap volumes

2. Significant improvements to Volume Protection – preventing you from making destructive changes to live volumes

a. Now configurable at a Storage Pool granularity as well as system level – must have both enabled for the feature to be active

b. Use different pools for active volumes that you with to be able to delete – e.g Spectrum CDM Snapshots

c. System setting will preserve existing value when upgrading

d. Mkrcrelationship will be protected by volume protection

3. SCSI LUN ID across IO groups will be enforced when adding additional IO groups, and the commands will fail if matching SCSI IDs are not available.

4. More guidance when restarting replication to help ensure that you start the replication in the correct direction

1. HyperSwap performance optimization – Read IOs will always be serviced by the site that receives the IO if that site has a good copy of data.

2. Host status reporting, general usability improvements

a. Complete mode – degraded state if any connectivity is missing (current behaviour)

b. Redundant mode (new default) – degraded state only if the system believes there is a Single Point of Failure

c. Redundant mode will resolve issues with AIX LPM systems always showing degraded

d. For Stretched Clusters or HyperSwap – you can configure the host’s expected site connectivity as either “all” or “local”

3. Host status reporting for NPIV systemsa. Show logins to “physical” WWPNs as blocked

b. Don’t count logins to physical WWPNs towards the host status
