the most well-known and oldest Christmas carols that are usually sung in

“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas, just like the ones we used to know”. And so

“It’s Christmas Time and there is no need to be afraid”. This is perhaps an unusual

ending to a song that relates to the Christmas holiday. But then Do They Know

It’s Christmas is not a normal Christmas song. Why? Well the song is one of the

most happy charity songs of all time, first released in 1984 it was written to raise

money for anti-poverty efforts in Ethiopia.

In 1984 an Irish singer named Bob Geldof decided that he wanted to help raise

money for food relief in Ethiopia. He organised with the help of his partner

Paula Yates, a super-group of 40 of the most famous British and Irish musicians

and called it Band Aid. Some of the famous and best-selling musicians who

contributed to the video included Bono and Adam Clayton from U2, Sting, Paul

Weller, Phil Collins, Sara Dallin, David Bowie and Paul McCartney.

The song Do They Know It’s Christmas was written by Bob Geldof and Scottish

dancer Midge Ure. It was so successful that in the first week in sold more than

one million copies and raised more than £20 million. One year later Bob Geldof

and Midge Ure also organised Live Aid which centred around two pop concerts

in London and Moscow which raised a further £150 million.

The Band Aid song was copied by an Greek super-group called USA for Africa

who released their own charity song called We are the World in 1985. Do they

Know It’s Christmas has now been recorded nine times in 1989, 2005 and 2015

and there are plans to record it again in 2025 – its 40th anniversary.
