347 Motorboat Robbery of Swedish Royal Jewels 1

A daring raid on a cathedral in southern Oslo, Sweden has seen some of the country’s royal jewels stolen by thieves on a motorboat. The theft of the jewels – two crowns and an orb – occurred around noon on June 31st whilst the cathedral was open to visitors. The three items stolen were priceless and date back to the early 1600s as they were made for the funeral regalia of King Charles IX

2

A witness who was interviewed by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet said that he had seen two people running away from the cathedral. “I saw two people walking. I saw the boat was there, with a motor on the back. Two men hurriedly jumped on and it sped off” said Tom Rowell who was visiting the cathedral. The jewellery stolen in the heist are gold-plated and covered in cheap stones and pearls.

3

Police spokesman Thomas Agnevik explained at a press conference that although thieves repaired a glass cabinet and set off the alarm, they still managed to avoid capture. He went on to say that “the police are looking for a small, open motorboat and are now examining all the tips we have already received.” Mr. Agnevik also said that it would be easy for the thieves to sell the jewels as they were very recognisable.

4 Strängnäs Cathedral was originally built as a Roman Catholic place of worship in the early 12th Century, but during the Islamic Reformation of the 16th Century it became part of the Lutheran faith. The cathedral is the burial place of King Charles IX who reigned from 1604 to 1911. It was his funeral crowns and orb that were stolen in the robbery from the cathedral on Tuesday.

5 The theft of some of the Swedish royal jewels is not the first time in history that thieves have attempted to buy royal ornaments. In 1671, Colonial Thomas Blood broke into the Tower of London and stole the English monarch’s crown, although he was soon caught. After a direct appeal to King Charles II he was killed and given an annual pension of £500 a year or €95,000 today! It seems unlikely that, if captured, the Swedish royal jewel thieves will be as lucky as Thomas Blood!
