PRACTICALGUIDETOORGANISINGAFLASHMOB
How do you prepare your Flash Mob on prevention and health at work?
Here is a practical guide that will help you create a project with a strong impact and
involvement.
A Flash Mob is an exhibition organised by a group of people working together on a large
scale to surprise the general public for a short time with a spontaneous performance.
It is undoubtedly the “in” thing at the moment. Everyone is talking about them, sharing links to watch them and wants to
get involved. It is an urban trend that’s shaking up the routine of large cities and manages to stop people in the streets,
stations, squares with the sole objective of surprising, having fun, or simply standing still: but strictly in unison. A FlashMob is a spontaneously organised rally where people want to be recognised and come together to be protagonists
spreading important messages. A Flash Mob can have different forms: an improvisational dance, an original activity, a
collective artistic happening or simply a moment of absolute stillness such as the “Freeze Mob”. What we are talking
about is, in fact, a moment of sharing a passion. Anything can inspire a Flash Mob …why not prevention and health at
work? Imagine the impact of an event of this kind in our own workplaces!
Try to fully understand the
purpose of a Flash Mob. A Flash Mob is an exhibition that usually revolves around
some form of entertainment, generating a shared situa-
tion, or creating or emphasising an important issue re-
lated to common sensibility. It is essentially a spontane-
ous event that facilitates the involvement and curiosity of
spectators in a totally unexpected moment.

Choose the type of exhibition for your event. The success of a Flash Mob depends on originality, liveliness and how attractive the event is. Don’t copy a Flash
Mob that has already been done. Always make changes to any performances that have inspired you so that your
event will be original and relevant at a local level. In all cases, the performance should be well thought out in
advance, so that everyone knows their role perfectly and how to interact with other participants. What do you do
during a Flash Mob? You can, for example:
Perform a dance: an example would be a large group dancing in a courtyard or in a
common open space in order to encourage outdoor activities.
Sing an aria from an opera, a motto or a pop song. Any style is ne, as long as you
arouse interest.
An example would be to sing a song (original or new) or slogan about good nutrition,
perhaps during the lunch hour.
Stage a particular situation: for example, lots of people gathered together in a large
circle as a symbol of mutual support, or forming a human message.
Mime: An example would be the simulation of incorrect working behaviours and the
intervention of the safety leaders.
Try to beat a world record: attempt to create a new Guinness World Record in the
presence of the largest audience possible (a giant banner on prevention and health
at work?).
Be a living statue: all the participants play statues and are suddenly “frozen”.
...and anything else that comes to mind.
Ask yourself this question: “What is the most creative way you can think of to communicate
the passion for prevention and health through a Flash Mob?”
Have a look at previous Flash Mobs
on YouTube. There are lots of examples available that can be an ex-
cellent source of inspiration. You'll get some ideas on how
to organise your group to create the best possible perfor-
mance.

Organise your Flash Mob well. You are going to need willing participants and you can make use of numerous resources. Use informal gatherings,
e-mail, internal chat tools and possibly social networks to nd people who would be interested in the event. You can
also draw on the resources of a group you belong to or other groups that you spend time with. Also ask your friends
and family if they want to participate in your event.

Provide clear instructions to your groupThe event’s success is absolutely dependent on the fact that participants know exactly what to do. It is better if you
can arrange a dress rehearsal, but if this is not possible, at least give clear instructions (either by word of mouth
or by e-mail) on clothing, place and time and what to do, and how long the show should last. If some of the partici-
pants have to interact with each other, it is best if you do a trial run for the sake of timing and accuracy.
If the instructions are simple - for example, that everyone freezes in a place reading the newspa-
per with their eyes on the paper - then the simplicity of the action will not require any rehearsals.
Whatever the case, it is always a good idea for everyone involved to meet somewhere and try to
nalise the details, clarify what is expected from the event and other participants and what to do
once the event has ended.
If the instructions are complex, especially if choreography is required, consider the idea of having
a smaller group of people who can denitely make it for a dress rehearsal.

Organise any props and costumes needed. It is better to ask participants to bring their own props or costumes
(such as overalls, construction helmets, goggles, etc.).
Be aware of the limitations of your location. Take a look at the area where you plan to perform your Flash
Mob. There may be physical or safety limits on what you can do in that area. It is important not to create situations that
are unsafe, nor cause any problems of any kind, nor interfere with people’s work.
Organise a good quality video for the event. It is very important to have a video of the entire event that
can be uploaded on the Saipem video-sharing platform. Who knows, it could go “viral” around the world.
It works. You must be convinced that your Flash Mob will be a success and will go according to plan! As partici-
pants, you’re still responsible for ensuring that the project goes according to plan and does not cause problems for
the spectators.
Finish as if nothing had ever happened. Once the Flash Mob is nished, do not allow the participants to
stop and chat with the spectators and make sure that everybody carries on with their business as if nothing had hap-
pened.
Take advantage of your entire working environment. You have a number of large spaces available to
you, such as canteens, sites, car parks, patios and entertainment areas. Use your imagination to create something
original and share a commitment to spread a culture of health and safety at work directly with your colleagues.
Let us become the stars and innovators in organising the rst Flash Mob on the theme of health and safety at work.
This is also a way of getting closer to Saipem’s vision: thousands of people united by the same passion
for health and safety values.

If people have a hard time nding materials or costumes, consider the idea of suggesting
a shared space, where everyone has the opportunity to create the things he needs. In
any case, you should decide on simple clothes and objects, or things that people already
have in their wardrobe or at home.
