We are delighted to announce our celebrations after winning one of the most

prestigious prizes in the international property industry.

Bow Branch scoops top international prize

“We have really good relationships with our clients and get great feedback from them - which I think is why we’ve been successful.”

Our very own Bow branch was not only named the best lettings agency in both London and the UK at the

UK Residential Property Awards, but also went on to win best international lettings agency branch at the International Residential Property Awards - beating off stiff competition from agencies in Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific, Arabia and Africa.

Branch Manager Claire Taylor-McCooke attended the glittering ceremony which took place in London, receiving the accolades from former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond. She said: “Winning the London and UK awards was amazing, and the international award was just the icing on the cake. Our team is

very driven and dynamic and we all have the same focus on high standards. We have really good relationships with our clients and get great feedback from them - which I think is why we’ve been successful.” Felicity J Lord Divisional Lettings Director Mariella Petralia said she was extremely proud of the team at Bow. She said: “They work brilliantly together and these three awards are a testament to their efforts, persistence and professionalism. An International Property Award is a world-renowned mark of excellence and is a huge achievement.” Chief Executive Paul Smith added: “To have won all three awards is unprecedented. Felicity J Lord in Bow fully deserves to be recognised for its outstanding success.”

FASHION

Bespoke is once again a priority with many people going so far as to personalise

valuables- some even engraving their iPods to achieve individuality. We

look into the history of fashion, harking back to the importance of Savile Row

tailoring, where it came from and why it has never gone out of fashion.

THE TAILORED FIT

made from scratch to a customer’s unique measurements; the ‘made-to-measure’ range is a pre-existing pattern that is altered to fit the customer and finally; the less expensive ‘off-the-rack’ is a finished item sold in standard sizes, similar to those available in the high street and department stores. Similarly, many high street stores now offer an alteration service, giving the general population the opportunity to achieve ‘the tailored fit’.Despite efforts of the high street and mass consumption, the boutiques of Savile Row are still frequented by those who are able, reinforcing the modern stature of the tailor. The tailored fit has never gone out of fashion, today bespoke is far more accessible. From engraved iPods to private car registrations, and tailor-made suits that set the bar; even the most avid fashion follower strives to be individual in some form. From Madonna to Lady Gaga, a glance at media stars demonstrates that unique is more interesting. Although now within reach, bespoke still, and probably always will remain a statement of class.

Now, even the most exclusive establishments on Savile Row offer three options, giving a modern take on the world of tailoring.

In a world dominated by the fashion-follower and the mass-produced, it can be near impossible to achieve that state

of individualism we like to call unique. Today, bespoke is firmly on trend, but did it ever go out of fashion? It seems not. The 21st century has seen herds of fashion victims flock towards the covers of in-vogue magazines on a quarterly basis to check out the latest fashions of the season, yet a look at true fashion icons of history show that originality reigns. This phenomenon dates back to the birth of modern fashion and the origins of Savile Row tailoring.

“Tailor” is referenced in the Oxford dictionary as dating back to 1297, when the art of cutting and sewing cloth was developing in Europe. Over time, the tailor grew in stature and his skilled art had become a distinguished craft available only to the powerful, wealthy and high society of the land. From around the 17th century, came the introduction of modern dress. Steering clear of highly decorative patterns, a more sober trend was favoured where tailors heralded the ‘fit’– a brand new

term to the world of fashion. Now clothes would follow the contours of the real body. This modern fashion is the very concept that brought tailors to the fore of their art, where they remain today. The pioneering hub of English tailoring was situated in a quiet corner of Mayfair in central London and is still world-renowned as the home of bespoke. Savile Row has been frequented by some of the most famous characters in history, flocking to be fitted for their finery.

With modern innovations such as sewing machines and new fabric technology, the art of tailoring has been forced to stand its ground amidst the development of factory production all over the word, bringing the ‘art’ of cutting and sewing clothes down to a more accessible level. Today, rows of the same garment fill walls of the same shops all over the world. Yet bespoke is somehow still alive and kicking. Now, through time and compromise, even the most exclusive establishments on Savile Row offer three options, giving a modern take on the world of tailoring. Firstly, ‘bespoke’ is

Known to most geographically as the ball being kicked by the boot of Italy, Sicily is just a short distance away from the African coast and boasts high temperatures for most of the year. During spring months, the Sicilian countryside is a palette of glorious colour with splashes of bright wildflowers blooming throughout the countryside. The area is best viewed at this time of year before hosts of tourists flock to the island in bus loads.

Boasting it’s own unique character, Sicily is so much more than a region of Italy, more so a law unto itself. Known for its stunning vistas, winding coastlines peppered with traditional Italian restaurants and its gourmet delights ranging from pastries and dolci (desserts) to the delightful Sicilian wine, Marsala, the Island is perfect for either a relaxing getaway or a touring holiday.

Arrive in fashionable Taormina to enjoy Italian boutique shopping and astonishing views from operatic balconies of the many luxury hotels scattered throughout the hillside.

Learn of Sicilian History at the most famous Greek site on the island, Agrigento or “Valley

of the Temples” to the locals. For untouched Sicily, venture inland to the heart of the Island to the hilltop town of Enna overlooking the Dittaino valley. Affectionately known to locals as “Belvedere”, translated as “Beautiful View”, Enna is the perfect sleepy town for relaxation and escapism.

Sicily’s most famous attraction, Mount Etna is an encapsulating addition to the island scenery. Reported as home of the mystical one-eyed monster, Cyclops, the active volcano attracts many visitors each year to hike or simply to witness the wonder of the mount.

WHERE TO STAY?Housed in a former 15th century monastery, The San Domenico Palace Hotel is rich in ancient memories, laden with contemplative silences preserved for centuries. Situated in Taormin just moments from the beach, the hotel is set among gardens, where fragrant orange blossom, rose and jasmine bloom in striking contrast to the snow-capped backdrop of Mount Etna. You may live in the city centre or several stories above the ground but that is

no reason not to have your very own garden. Follow this guide on turning your

contemporary apartment into a low maintenance paradise.

GARDENS

In times gone by, gardening was a human necessity in order to feed our family. Today, with the organic food revolution, an

ever-present environmental awareness and a constant need for city-dwellers to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, having your own urban garden is rather attractive.

From increasing the value of your property, to allowing you to cook with fresh herbs and vegetables picked from a private garden, an urban garden has a host of benefits waiting to tempt our green fingers. Escaping from the trials and tribulations of hectic modern life to an oasis of calm, surrounded by greenery and wildlife for a few hours a week can be highly restorative for our wellbeing. With Horticultural Therapy being renowned for its rehabilitating effects on social, physical and psychological

disorders, the health benefits of having a garden cannot be underestimated. To many, the thought of spending time relaxing in a garden, seems like paradise but has never felt accessible due to their busy city-centre habitat. The good news is that there is scope for incorporating a garden into your home, whatever the size and location.

From a roof, balcony, or patio to a shelf, table or window box, it is possible to enjoy the benefits of an urban garden regardless of the space available. With growing numbers of our population flocking to cities, urban gardening is a natural evolution of gardening culture, and with new techniques and technology at our disposal, we can turn our homes into green havens with a gentle dose of creativity and a few simple changes.

URBAN GARDEN

GARDENS

Being based in the penthouse apartment or having a large balcony area, has its advantages when it comes to an urban garden, allowing you the luxury of a roof garden. Popular in cities where land plots and gardens are hard to come by, roof gardens are the perfect solution to a private, or communal garden within an apartment block. Giving you access to additional entertaining or relaxation space, your lifestyle will be changed for the better. Along with the benefits of enjoying the garden itself, a roof garden also adds value to the property.

Sarah Bevin of Urban Roof Gardens said, “Incorporating a roof garden to your property will increase the value of the property substantially as well as insulating the roof and reducing noise pollution in the room below. Additionally, a green roof absorbs up to 75% of rainfall, thus reducing the runoff dramatically, and lowering the risk of floods.”

So where do you start? The first stop when considering a rooftop area is to approach

professionals. Sarah explains, “The first rule is to never assume the roof will be strong enough. Approach a structural engineer to check this and calculate the load of your terrace.”

After checking with your local planning department, planning permission may need to be gained. If so, you will need to get the relevant section of the building surveyed, plans drawn up and the planning application submitted.

With a lack of shelter from the elements, the garden design and furniture should be considered carefully as should the safety aspects for what could be a significant drop to ground level. Adhere to legal handrail requirements for rooftop areas and ensure all furniture is weatherproof and able to be stored away in bad weather.

As an owner of an apartment within a block, consider liaising with other tenants who may wish to create a communal roof garden thus splitting the cost and sharing the benefits.

Along with the benefits of

enjoying the garden itself, a

roof garden also adds value to the

property.

In a small patio or a restricted outdoor area, careful planning is key to creating an inviting space. As an extension to your home, your garden should take on similar attributes to your interior. Have a contemporary themed garden for a contemporary home, for example.

In an urban garden, your design should remain very simple in order to maximise the space you have. Use light coloured furniture and pale decking or slabs to enhance the feeling of space and employ lined stripes on any walls or decking to elongate the garden.

With limited views in a cityscape, your garden view is vital, particularly when it can be viewed so clearly from your home through patio doors, so be careful to pick plants that are in leaf during every season.

GARDENS

With indoor gardening you can use any space available to you whether that be a table, a few shelves or a single plant container.

When outdoor space is not available to you, simply invite the outdoors in. The inside of your home has the added advantage of being a controlled environment independent of external weather conditions, allowing you to grow plants that would not survive outdoors.

With indoor gardening you can use any space available to you whether that be a table, a few shelves or a single plant container.

Indoors, you will still need to consider factors such as the ambient temperature, moisture, air circulation and light sources as well as maintain consistency in plant watering and pruning – some require less than others.

Creative gardeners can consider orchids, bamboos or ferns. Orchids are a classic indoor plant because of their tropical origins. For the more laid-back approach, Spider plants housed in hanging baskets or shelves of Cacti are particularly low maintenance.

Building a Juliette balcony is a modern way of creating the illusion of the outdoors with increased natural light through French windows, although there are options, which require less budget and intrusion.

COME INDOORS

Growing an indoor herb garden is the ideal solution to the apartment occupant who loves to cook with fresh ingredients. Growing herbs from seed is economical and sustainable. With limited space available in a container, choose to cultivate a few select herbs most commonly sought in recipes. Basil, Thyme, Parsley, Chives, Oreganos and Rosemary are key ingredients and are relatively easily grown in a beginners herb garden.

A window ledge is the perfect habitat for a small tomato vine where it receives most sunlight and can be watched closely, allowing you to pick and enjoy organic, homegrown food without trekking to the nearest boutique city grocer. If you would prefer to see plants outside your window, a window garden is an easy solution allowing you to create a view of blooming flowers.

As Dan Benson of Modular Garden comments, “Plant a window box with some wildflower seeds and watch them grow into a burst of colour and life - butterflies and bees will love the extra nectar and in the winter you can remove and plant with some Winter bulbs for some seasonal colour.”

When you are ready to transform your urban garden, get some inspiration from existing garden examples. Choose the style you want to create and work towards it. Examples can be found at www.modulargarden.com and www.urbanroofgardens.com

We are delighted to welcome the latest addition to our London

A NEW ADDITION

A NEW ADDITION

The new Surrey Quays office will reach from Rotherhithe to Bermondsey to the Deptford Park area ensuring that each area of London has sufficient FJL servicing.

As part of our expansion plans which will see the number of Felicity J Lord offices in the capital double over the

next three years, we were delighted to cut the ribbon on our new office in Surrey Quays in November 2010.

The new office, located in the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, which is situated between Canada Water Jubilee Line Underground and Surrey Quays East London Line stations, employs a team of eight, dedicated to providing first class service to you.

Headed up by a team of three; Sales Manager Amy Bennett, Branch Partner Mark Bennett and Senior Negotiator Adam Tindides, the new branch has a host of negotiating and city centre property experience guiding it through its new life, which has gotten off to a great start. Receiving six offers in six weeks, Mark Bennett says, “The response from applicants has been overwhelming.”

The Residential Lettings Team in Surrey Quays has been strengthened by the appointment of Senior Lettings Negotiator, Ricardo Rocha. We are embracing the challenge of increasing our success within the Surrey Quays lettings market.

Because of the size of our agency, we can offer security and support to our clients, providing them with confidence and reassurance. Felicity J Lord Lettings

is a bonded member of both ARLA - the Association of Residential Lettings Agents and NALS The National Approved Letting Scheme, offering peace of mind to landlords and tenants in knowing that they are dealing with a firm which agrees to meet defined standards of customer service, together with having in place the necessary insurances to protect clients’ money.

FJL have successfully served the Surrey Quays area for many years from our nearby Tower Bridge/Shad Thames office, and felt it was time to actually have an office here to provide further coverage for our clients. The new Surrey Quays office will reach from Rotherhithe to Bermondsey to the Deptford Park area ensuring that each area of London has sufficient FJL servicing.

The Surrey Quays area benefits from a number of development and regeneration schemes, not least the Jubilee line and the DLR extension. This can be seen with the numerous projects on Bankside, and the continued development arising from the 2012 London Olympic Games. We anticipate these major projects are bound to boost the property market.

We are pleased to announce several other planned openings taking place in the Southbank area and West and North London with future expansion earmarked in locations including Islington, Camden, Notting Hill, Paddington, St John’s Wood, Hampstead, Kennington and Shoreditch.
