When I was working in the private sector, I learned an important lesson from one of my bosses. We were having a division meeting, and we were discussing one project that had gone totally wrong. Every plan we made seemed to have gone completely awry. People around the table, myself included, listed all the things we did and all the unintended results of what we did. Several of us threw up our hands in despair, wondering if the project were not completely doomed. Our boss listened patiently. When we were done, he said that he understood what had transpired. He then told us that he blamed no one in particular for any of the things that went wrong. However, he now expected that we would become part of the solution rather than part of the problem. I felt liberated at that point. Nobody was going to blame me for anything. People just wanted to figure a way out of the mess. As it turned out, there was no easy, direct way out. We had to reassess the goals of the project and reconnect with the client. Each of us had to change a bunch of the parameters and methodologies of which we were in charge. And, while we did limp to a conclusion, the project could not have been described as a success. I learned a lot from this experience. I learned how to live with the disappointment of failure, of not meeting expectations. I learned that doing a little bit to correct a big problem helped everyone else as they were doing the same. That last part is not always easy. People with different parts to play can often come into conflict, even when, or maybe especially when, they are working on the same big project. Message from the Rabbi

As the high holidays approach, I take stock of this last year. I joined a new community and I’ve met wonderful people. It has been a thrill! I must also confess that there is a lot that went on this year that distressed me greatly. I am not terribly distressed at saying good-bye to 5778. As someone who occasionally checks in on Facebook, I also get a sense of other people’s feelings about the state of our country and the world: rage, anger, disillusionment, disappointment. Letter from the President Dear FJCC Friends, I hope you’ve been enjoying the pleasures of summer.

Movies Summer wouldn’t be summer without outdoor movies. Thanks to Alan Hylton and his collection of Disney classics, Sharon Rednor’s planning, Carolyn and David Goldman’s shopping, Harry Rapkin’s technological expertise, and the Youth Group’s delicious baking skills, we have had two terrific movie nights. First we saw The Prince and the Pauper, and for the second movie night we watched Lady and the Tramp. For the second, we had a great time at our now annual summer barbecue and celebrated Rabbi Cohen’s first full year at the FJCC. Mazal tov, Rabbi!

HIAS Cathryn Miller-Wilson, the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) visited with us on August 9 and shared updates about the separation of children and parents at our southern border. She discussed the law, current governmental policies, and the status of the over 400 children who have been separated and are not yet in contact with their families.

Youth Group The Youth Group has had some fun activities this summer. They baked for the first outdoor movie and raised some money for their events. They also met at the Bagel Café to begin to develop their calendar for fall and winter activities.

Be part of a solution, know your role, respect others, keep in mind the big picture. My boss was not Jewish, but these are very Jewish ideas. So, what can I, one individual in Flemington, NJ, be expected to do about an international catastrophe such as immigration, poverty, anti-Semitism or racism? In an article in the Forward a few years back, entitled “How Do We Avenge Steven Sotloff's Death?,” the journalist who was decapitated by ISIS militants, Jay Michaelson considers what our reaction should be. He writes: “We must practice a cold, calculating rage. We will use force where possible, but [also] persuasion [and] politics, and [we will be] pragmati[c]. Humanitarian aid, for example, is not mere charity; it is a calculated investment that less desperate people…are less likely to support extremism…. It’s also smart,” he argued, “to muzzle our own extremists.... [They] may not be beheading people, but they are not part of the solution…. [The idea that] all, or even most, Muslims support a brutal, murderous gang…, which beheads [dozens, if not hundreds of] fellow Muslims for [each] American [they kill—this notion is just wrong.]” We may acknowledge that it does feel good, though, to rant and rave. But, we need to take a deep breath and recognize that “careful, methodical thinking…is a lot more likely to succeed than ignorance and rage. The question is not whether I am right or wrong in my desires, in my instincts. The question [we must ask] is whether these instincts are the smartest guidelines for actual policy.” So, what can I, one individual in Flemington, NJ, be expected to do about what’s wrong with this country, with this world? I don’t claim to know what the best approach is to dealing with all our problems. I expect we will have to try several approaches to each issue confronting us, figuring out which works best at what time. But I remember what my boss taught me: Be part of a solution, know your role, respect others’ point of view, keep in mind the big picture. This is what it means to be a grown-up, Michaelson reminds us. It’s less exciting than ranting, less fulfilling than a violent rampage. But “real justice is not about ratings, catharsis, or tough talk at the bar. It is about the relentless, methodical destruction of evil. That requires a certain sublimation of our human desires for revenge. But, [since we are human, perhaps] not a [complete] abandonment of them.” As we begin this new year, I pray that each of us may find a role that will empower us to be part of a solution, rather than part of a problem. May we sublimate as much of our desire for revenge as we are able. May we always remember to respect others with different roles and different opinions. And may we keep in mind the big picture. As we say in our davvening every Saturday morning: We are put on earth to praise, to labor, and to love.

Shanah Tovah!

Family Promise We hosted two families for Family Promise in August and it was a great success. Seven congregants made food, 10 slept over, and 28 provided conversation and company. The Family Promise families became part of our family. We greatly appreciate the work of Jeff and Amy Marshall, Alisa Grossman, and Josy Kestenbaum in assuring that all details were covered as they made our FJCC building a home, including provision of two weeks of healthy meals for our guests.

Building Items Our security system will be fully activated this month. A letter was sent to our congregation to update us all on the new system. In broad strokes, we have new cameras and electronic entrance to our building, and we have distributed a finite number of electronic fobs for access. If you have a key but not a fob your attempt to enter the building will cause the alarm to go off. So, please do not try to enter with your key. Push the buzzer to the right in the entrance and those with camera images projected on their computer screens will buzz you in.

Communication and Accounts The Chaverware and Chaverweb software will be made fully operational after the High Holy Days. Using this software, we will be able to maximize FJCC communication and improve access to our FJCC accounts.

The Center Series Line-Up We are finalizing plans for this year’s Center Series. If you have programs you’d like to run or if you’d like to join the Center Series committee, please let us know. We could use the help! And of course, we need program sponsors. So become a proud sponsorof a Center Series program!

High Holidays Enjoy the preparation for the High Holy Days. It is a time of reflection and a time to slow down and absorb all that is good and healthy in our lives and our community. Take your time to breathe and feel the goodness.

With best wishes,

Mindy

The FJCC Youth Group is ecstatic to be back again for the 2018–2019 school year. The newly elected board, alongside our new advisor Julia Sirota, has already started planning fun and exciting events for the whole year. Kids of all ages are welcome to come and have a great time with the Youth Group. We will be implementing Young Judaea as well as United Synagogue Youth programming, creating a vibrant and active community here in Flemington. We are always looking for more people to help us with events. If you would like to learn more about the Youth Group in general or want to help plan future events, please call the office to get contact information for Ben Doshna, Hannah Rosenberg, or Julia Sirota. We are looking forward to a fantastic year.

Mazel Tov to Mindy and Eliot Friedman on the birth of their grandson, Charlie Acer Norman.

Mazel Tov to Jay Kawarsky, whose choral piece, “Sacred Rights, Sacred Song,” is being considered for a nomination at the 61st Grammy Awards.

We extend our condolences to Robin and Bradley Mason on the passing of Bradley’s beloved father, Ross Mason, Jr.

We extend our condolences to Sandy Mishkin on the passing of his father, Alvin.

We extend our condolences to Jeanie Weissblatt on the passing of her beloved husband, Elliot Silverstone.

A Note from the Rabbi… This year, during the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur, we will continue to read the names of our departed loved ones, but we will refrain from reading the full text of each dedication (such as the names of the dedicating family members). I realize that this is a change from an old tradition at FJCC. I am concerned that standing for that long during the fast day is a Tirchah deTzibbura—i.e, places an undue additional burden on many in the community, particularly as our congregation ages. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Rabbi Eric Cohen

Around the Synagogue

Dear Congregants:On Monday, August 20, the FJCC activated our

new security system. We are thrilled to have this new system in place as it will help keep our students, staff, and congregation safe. This new system creates changes in how we access the building.

The office will continue to be open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 2 pm and Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm. Outside of these hours, the synagogue will remain accessible for classes, tutoring, meetings, and events. When planning events, please contact Deborah Kesselhaut in the office (908-782-6410).

For the protection of those in the building, the inner front door will always be locked. As you have in the past, please use the buzzer on the far right of the inner door to be identified and buzzed in. The light on the door will turn from red to green indicating you are free to open the door.

When no one is in the building, the alarm will be set. Only those with an alarm code will have access to the building.

Without a code, your keys will no longer allow access to the building without setting off the alarm. If you have not been assigned a code, please return your keys to the office as soon as possible. The alarm system has been specifically programmed to ensure we maintain the sanctity of Shabbat and holidays.

Thank you very much for your cooperation as we all adapt to our new security system.

May we go from strength to strength,

Mindy Engle-Friedman,

President FJCC Board of Directors

A big thank you to Lois Gross for her many years of doing so much for the gift shop! Wishing Lois much deserved relaxation with family in her retirement!

We are ready for the High Holy Days with apple and honey dishes, challah plates, hostess gifts, Shabbat accessories, and much more. Please stop by to see our offerings and markdowns on many items. We are open during regular office hours and also some Sunday mornings.

We are looking for volunteers to help with occasional unpacking, setup, Hebrew school Hanukkah shopping, and Sunday mornings. It is a great volunteer opportunity that does not require a lot of hours. Please feel free to contact me with any interest or questions.
