Personal Memories of BrightonSpeed Trialsby Dr R.L. McGhie

(past President of Brighton & Hove Motor Club)

I have been closely associated with the Speed Trials for over 40 years andalthough many of my happy personal memories would be of no great interest, oneor two occurrences do stand out.

I think my first encounter with the event was in 1950 when a member of thelocal constabulary stopped the traffic at the top of Black Rock to allow out-and-outracing cars to return to the start by way of Marine Parade. In those days our white-helmeted policewere broad-minded enough to allowunlicensed and unsilenced racingcars to use the public roads.

I was not then a member of Brighton & Hove Motor Club so I decided I hadbetter have a closer look. The course was a kilometre long and Raymond Mays ofERA and BRM fame put up the fastest time of the day in 24.4 seconds. Starting wasdifficult as traffic lights were used and timing commenced when they went green.Cars were run in pairs and if one car jumped the green light then both had to startagain. This system was intensely disliked by drivers but was not changed till 1965;thereafter each driver started his own time and timing did not begin until he brokea light beam by crossing the start line.

By 1951 I had joined the motor club and by volunteering to marshal got a betterview. Within a few years the ex-Raymond Mays ERA, now in the hands of KenWharton, was fastest for 3 years running, ending with a Course Record of 23.34seconds which stood until 1960 when Jim Berry broke it with 23.21 seconds. Thenext year Sidney Alland entered an Alland Dragster. He was the first Englishmanto introduce the American sport to this country and as he was President of Brighton& Hove Motor Club at the time, where better to do so than at the Brighton SpeedTrials? However, the course of 1 kilometre proved too long for these machineswhich were designed for 1/. mile events. By 1963 the Allandhad a challenger in theform of an American dragster called "Mooneyes". They ran, not as part of thecompetition, but by way of a demonstration. Then in 1964 Dante Duce drove adragster called' 'Moonbeam" which was specially constructed for the event; it tookthe course record at 21.95 seconds and its terminal speed brook the 150 m.p.h.barrier for the first time.

A new name was coming to prominence in the programme, that of Miss PatsyBurt. She made a habit of putting up some very fast times and in 1968 became thefirst lady to put up fastest time of the day; her time of 20.21 seconds in her McLarenwas a new Course Record.

An attempt was made to run a 1/. mile event specially to accommodate dragsters4

but both the RAC Steward and the Police objected on the grounds of safety andnothing came of it.

1975 sees the appearance of the name of Tony Johnstone as Assistant Clerk ofthe Course: he is of course now Chairman of the Club and today's Clerk of theCourse.

The last year in which the event was run over a kilometre was 1979, the CourseRecord being finallyset for that distance at 17.48 seconds and held jointly by DaveHarris and Terry Smith. From 1980 onwards the event has been run over half a mileand since 1981 cars have run singly as a safety precaution necessitated by risingspeeds.

I should mention that when referring to the Course Record I have referred onlyto records set by cars. In fact motorcycles have sometimes been faster and held theoutright Course Record.

Even in these years of depression the event still attracts a full entry list. Theregulations are published at the beginning of June and entries close at the end ofJulyeach year. Only 200 entries are accepted so if you want an entry next year get itin by mid-June.

I often wonder what the attraction of Speed Trials is. Why do people pay £50and travel from the North of Scotland for three runs up Brighton front? We maynever know but many famous names in the present-day motor racing world havetaken part - Ken Tyrrell, Derek Bell and Jonathan Palmer to name but a few - sothere must be something about our display of "Grunt on the Front". This year itis 88 years since the first event; long may it continue.

Brighton Speed Trials - 1905 to 1993It was in 1905 that this stretch of Brighton seafront was first used for trials of speed for

the new-fangled and much hated "horseless carriage". A four-day national festival of motorraces was the forerunner of what by 1932 became an annual one-day event in which many ofthe famous names in motor racing subsequently competed.

The 1905 events, although a great success for the town, gave rise to big problems forthe Mayor and members of the Corporation. A body of ratepayers subsequently obtained aHigh Court ruling that the £3,050 spent in re-surfacing Madeira Drive prior to the Speed Trialswas "wasteful, extravagant, and unnecessary, and therefore illegal" so the Mayor and theCorporation members had to foot the bill out of their own pockets. Fortunately for them, however, the Court of Appeal reversed the ruling and in 1907 they all got their money back.

Not surprisingly the Corporation lost its enthusiasm for the Speed Trials after that scareand they were not held again until the Brighton & Hove Motor Cycle and Light Car Clubrevived the event in 1923. They took place again in 1924 only to be suspended once morewhen a police ban prohibited motor racing on public roads for safety reasons. The presentorganisers, Brighton & Hove Motor Club, revived the event again in 1932 when it wasestablished that Madeira Drive was not a publicroad because it was owned by the Corporationwho could close it at will so it escaped the police ban. This time the revival of the Speed Trialsproved more lasting as it is now over 60 years since the 1932 event and ever since thenBrighton & Hove Motor Club have run the event annually, apart from 1939 to 1945 and oneother year when an accident necessitated a safety review.

Like last year's event today's is sponsored by Frosts Cars Limited and the organisers, competitors, spectators and everyone else concerned can be grateful to Frosts for theircontinued participation and SUPPl)rt. This event is the oldest competition in the entire Britishmotor sport calendar and we are all happy that it can continue under the title, The FrostsBrighton National Speed Trials.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC RACINGThe Vintage and Historic Class introduced in 1985 has always produced aninteresting and varied entry: this year is no exception.Large capacity cars will dominate the entry and Bob Burrell, last year's class winner, will try for another win with the V12 8 litre supercharged Bentley. Powerfulopposition will be provided aviators Tony Bianchi with his 6.4 litre Cadillac Allard, and Spence Flack's quick 8 litre Bentley. Both drivers are expert Spitfire pilots andwe can rely on them making their motors fly here at the Speed Trials.Adrian Watney in the Brooke Special which has a 2 litre supercharged ERA engine,or David Baldock in the 2 litre supercharged Alta, could well provide a surpriseresult.Extra interest is added to the class, for as well as the outright winner we have a racewithin a race, the VSCC Handicap. Vanessa Wilson and Edward Way have AustinSeven single seaters, the latter car being the ex-works supercharged version.Harold Smith has the evocative 1916 Indianapolis Sunbeam and David Venableswill try hard with the Fiat Balilla. Both the Lea Francis 1'12 litre supercharged carsof Max Beddow and Tom Delaney are in with a chance - it is anyone's guess whowill take the trophy this year.

The Motor Cycles - Brighton 1993The second Saturday in the month of September is ringed on the Sprinters'calendar, and usually in red, in order that they do not miss their attendance atthis long, long standing event. It is an event which still retains the atmosphereof the old time events and provides a particular enjoyment to both those whoare involved as a competitor and to you the spectator; and even to those whoput in so many hours of unstinting work getting the whole thing up and running,a task that begins immediately at the close of the current trials. Is it worth it?We all believe that it is as we are all of us involved in living history: not museumpieces slowly fading away, but live exhibits, living in both sound and fury. Thetask becomes that little bit harder year by year as legislation encroaches furtherand further into all our lives and obstacles arise again and again. It is that bandof true enthusiasts who, despite all the problems, are determined to keep thistrove of Motoring and Motor Cycle history alive and very much kicking. Of theVintage bikes entered take note of No.304, the Zenith J.A.P. ridden in trueBrooklands style by Chris IIIman; the bike is 70 years old this year and withrespect to its great age and fragility Chris has reluctantly decided to retire theold girl who can nevertheless still hitch up her skirts and put in a veryrespectable time, hand change three speed gear box notwithstanding.Another regular at the event is Basil Keys who as a very young man rode in thetrials back in 1933 and has a record of continuous entry up to the present dayon his ex Francis Williams Brighton Nor JAP special (No.317). To emphasisethe point Basil is accompanied today by his son Roger (No.305) on a 250 TZYamaha and Basil's grandson Gordon Keys (No.306) on his 350cc TZ. Fathersand sons competing yes, but three generations is something else of a tradition. While the older machines of the vintage era get thinner on the ground inevitablyyear by year. the current crop of Super-bikes fill the gaps. The Graingerbrothers will have ridden up from Plymouth today on the bikes they will beracing. Mike on a Kawasaki 1100 ZZR Turbo in the up to 2000cc racing classand brother Fred on a "Proddy" ZZR1100 in the Production class. Also in thisclass is a rare one, the Laverda "Jota" of Ron Hill; he has a lot of competitionhowever for there are no less than seven ZZR Kwackers out for blood in thisclass. A lone Brit entry is the Boyer Daytona Triumph ridden by Paul Standing.Paul who with his daughter Jane puts in much time organising the bike entryalways enjoys his Brighton rides and as this one is straight out of the Boyershowrooms he had better not get a scratch on it. But, seriously, it's great to seea British bike back in the field again. Finally the Vintage Motor Cycle Club would like to thank all those folks whowork so hard to put this world famous event on. We thank the Brighton andHove Motor Club for their continued invitations to us to take part and theCorporation of Brighton for their continued support, and our special thanks toyou the spectators, for without you there really would be no point. Let theweather be kind to us all that we may, all of us, have a very good and enjoyableday's true sport.

NEW WOMEN'S HILLCLIMB AND SPRINT SERIES

A new national hillclimb and sprint championship has beenorganised by the British Women's Racing Drivers' Clubwith generous backing from Atol Racking and BuildingsLimited.

The series has been devised to encourage more womencompetitors to take part in sprints and hillclimbs at nationallevel. Women competitors must be members of the BritishWomen's Racing Drivers' Club and must register to beeligible. Points are awarded to competitors in respect oftheir fastest time of the day compared to the class winner. The best eight from the 31 national speed championshipevents will count towards special trophies for 1st, 2nd and3rd overall at the end of the season. Each competitor musttake part in a minimum of two hillclimbs and two sprints toqualify.

Announcing the new championship, Keith Walker,Managing Director of Atol Racking and Buildings Limited,an experienced hillclimber said, "There are manysuccessful women drivers taking part in the smaller events, but far fewer competing at national level.
