‘PAT ON THE BACK’ FOR THETIMBER INDUSTRY

The government has won the applause of theBritish Woodworking Federation (BWF) after it was

announced that a ban on wood waste to landfillwas not to be introduced. After a Defra’s Call for

Evidence last year revealed that the volume ofmaterial ending up in landfill was smaller than

initially thought, has been declining steadily since2009 and looks to continue, the decision was

made that at the present time a ban would createan additional burden for businesses. BWF and the

Timber Trade Federation (TTF) highlighted thework of the Timber Resource Efficiency Partnership

towards the goal of reducing the total amount ofwaste produced by the timber sector. On the

whole, BWF members are generally supportive of alandfill ban, with most indicating that they found a

sustainable use for much of their wood waste.Defra will continue to monitor the situation.

FIRA has welcomed a new Standards andRegulatory Manager to their team. Tristine

SCHATTDECOR + PALIS = INDUSTRIAL DIGITAL PRINTER

Schattdecor, the décor paper printer, has teamed up with Palis (Padaluma Inkjet-Solutions GmbH), adigital print specialist, in an exclusive development partnership. For the next 2 years, the companies areputting a new type of high-performance single-pass digital printer with a 225cm print width intooperation. Printing from roll to roll, the unit will have a working speed of 75-150m/min and be capable ofefficient and economic short run work. Schattdecor has had a strong commitment to digital print décors since 2009 and provided each of itsworldwide plants with 160cm-wide digital press in 2011. Last year it took a 2m-wide multi-pass digitalprinter into operation and the exclusive partnership with Palis shows Schattdecor is keen to push theprogress of inkjet technology.

Traditional meets modern face toface in a heady mix of state-of-the-art technology and time-honoured

skills at decorative hardware specialists,Armac Martin. Nestling in the very heartof Birmingham, once the epicentre ofBritain’s burgeoning brass industry,Armac Martin has quite literally forged areputation for designing and makingsupreme quality brass handles, hinges, locks, escutcheons, castors, cabinet stays, engraved name plates and more. Fromstart to finish, raw metal to polishedwork of art, every aspect is manufacturedin Britain by its 50-strong workforce. Andso authentic are some of Armac Martin’sdesigns that many have provenance.

The forges may have been solddecades ago but brass-working skillsthat have been handed down throughgenerations are still employed in the

crafting of Armac Martin productswhich grace the furniture of some ofBritain’s finest makers of copy antiques.

But Armac Martin’s story is aboutmuch more than traditional design.Managing Director, Mark McGrailexplains: “A major rebranding two yearsago enabled us to pull together thestrengths of Armac Manufacturing inantique and reproduction fittings withthe more contemporary interior fittingsof Martin & Co. We have a vast libraryof patterns. Factor in all the differentsizes and finishes and we havethousands of parts. We have acatalogue - a new catalogue is due outlater this year - but Armac Martin is amanufacturing company. We can workfrom drawings, photographs orsketches to manufacture bespokedesigns for customers. Because we

manufacture, we have the flexibility todo small runs of a dozen up to fullproduction runs.”

In addition to hot stamping, pressure diecasting, gravity and sandcasting, lost wax and fine casting, chrome and nickel electro plating, brazing, pressing and polishing - all thetraditional skills of brass forging - ArmacMartin’s factory is equipped with CNCengineering for turning and milling aswell as laser engraving equipment topersonalise plaques with brand namesand logos for total exclusivity. Thecompany’s designers work with up-to-the-minute Solidworks CAD systemsthat enable 3D models to be created, often within a few days of receiving asketch. “We can take a design fromconcept to model in a couple of days,”confirms Richard, whose family hasowned Armac since his GreatGrandfather established the companyback in 1929. “Stamping might takethree to four months but if it’s a CNCpiece that’s required, we can usuallymake it within a couple of days.”

One-off replacement parts in tensor twenties are as much a part ofArmac Martin’s success story as theone hundred to one thousand batchesthe company produces most of. But, ifyour requirement is for ten thousand,it’s not a number that will phase the

engineers, or challenge the company’sproduction capability.

In recent times, Armac Martin hasdeveloped many exclusive items forkitchen furniture manufacturers both inthe UK and in the USA. It has partneredhigh end lighting companies. It hasworked with specialist boat builders, provided components for cooker andrange manufacturers. And it hasassisted English Heritage on restorationprojects. Visiting furniture designersdelight at the opportunity to browsethe countless boxes of handles, plates, rings, drops and escutcheons on theirway to realising a unique design forprototyping. And, uniquely, it’s all partof the Armac Martin service.

2013 was never destined to find aplace among the truly great ZOWyears. Despite the immeasurably

better timing of ZOW at the beginningof the year, the sheer size of Interzumdominates the odd years, persuadingthe décor and printing giants (and mostof the big names in hardware) to holdoff showing new designs until May. Butnot all followed the trend. TheHornschuch stand - which was awashwith visitors poring over the latestdesigns - proved beyond a shadow ofdoubt that buyers still want newproduct early in the year. Launching allits new product at ZOW with fewcompetitors to steal its thunder ratherthan waiting until May could prove tobe a very shrewd move for Hornschuch. The impending turmoil that some arepredicting from the lack of an overlapbetween this year’s Interzum and Lignamay yet see a drop in visitors to theMay shows, as many of those whotraditionally visit both could find theprospect of two dead days between theevents difficult to justify.

Hornschuch was not alone in itsthinking. Senoplast also used theoccasion to launch new product andmany of the edgebanding specialistssaw ZOW as the ideal opportunity toannounce new products and team-upswith major laminate and boardproducers. On the Ostermann stand, big news was its alignment to Pfleidererwith absolute matches proudly on showat the entrance to its stand. MKTannounced more new designs than Ican ever recall seeing in one show froman edgebanding manufacturer - and itsAlphatape Flexible could be the answerto the prayers of handleless doormanufacturers who want a product thatworks inside routed profile handles.

The trend towards handleless doorsmust have had many a handlemanufacturer quaking in his boots. NotFurnipart. Take a look at Maui, a grace-ful handle from Furnipart that capturesthe very essence of the handleless trendbut adds a stylish twist to put beautifulhardware centre stage in the moststylish of modern designs.

Full marks also to Union Knopf fortheir rugged “Raw” collection. As amajor supplier to the fashionistas of theapparel industry - an industry fromwhich trends tend to filter down -Union Knopf usually has a pretty goodinsight into what’s coming up next infashionable circles and roughly-crafteddesigns are certainly enjoying arenaissance at the moment.

I have to say, I do enjoy heavy-weight texture - which is why I cannotresist a chance to grab some dramaticphotography on the VD Werkstättenstand. Texture does not get muchmore heavyweight than on VDW’smighty pressed décor panels and therewere several new designs making theirdebuts at ZOW. Take a look at Blocks,Brickwood and Blockwood. They arejust fabulous for architectural use, or fordramatic effect in hotel reception areas.

ZOW 2013 seemed to be astatement year for the glass industry. Asfar as I can recall, never have there beenquite so many producers of decorativeglass and mirrors showing laser etched,

printed, painted - and otherwisedecorated glass and mirror products. The message from Polish glass specialistFischmet was send us a picture andwe’ll send you glass panels for wardrobedoors, kitchen doors, bathroomcabinets - whatever you need. I’m notwild about the idea of having giantcarrots emblazoned on my kitchencabinet doors and the two-metreorchids on the stand seemed overkillbut, with a little more subtlety in theinterpretation, imaginative manu-facturers might well find a way to addvalue and profit to products for the UKmarket by using printed or etched glass.

In all, ZOW 2013 presented 402exhibitors from 27 countries, including60 first-time exhibitors from 15 differentcountries. At around 24,000m2 andwithout Hall 19, it was a smaller thanusual show but provisional figures showthat around 11,800 visitors came overthe four days - a third from outsideGermany. Most exhibitors we talked towere content with results - and that initself made for a good start to 2013.

Visitors to the Hornschuch standwere treated to a collectionwhich includes both award-

Rustic lovers will enjoy the newSanremo Oak with natural Legnoembossing, which enhances theruggedness of this décor. But if rusticis your thing, don’t miss Barrique Oakwith its glazed effect reminiscent oflimed finishes. The white pore struc-ture provides an alternative to otherwhite décor options.

Contrasting with Sanremo, Yukonis a simple, timeless woodgrain withfiner structure which is accentuatedby slight discolourations. Yukon ismore a collection of the best ele-ments of several timbers, themed to

curvy componentsOne of the biggest surprises at

ZOW 2013 was the presence ofColumbus. Available through

Coventry-based Ney Ltd, Columbus hasbeen making membrane presses for thelast 30 years and its range of equipmentencompasses mass production mem-brane presses, foil lamination machinesand machines for forming plastics andsolid surfacing materials.

On show at ZOW 2013 were a coupleof the company’s smaller machines, designed for the small to mid-sizeworkshop. Although the machines on thestand had made some pretty complex, deep pressings, the Head of TechnicalSupport & Dev-elopment, ManfredMüller, who is in charge of customersupport in the UK, confirmed theCombitherm on show was the standardmachine: “But it is really two machines inone: a heating unit and a forming unit,”he says. “With this machine it is possibleto bend laminate. We also make biggerheating ovens of up to four metres andwe make bigger presses with vertical orswivel movement.”

The entry level Columbus

Combitherm at ZOW had a 2880 x1280mm bed and was capable ofpressing components of up to 500mm inheight. “We use a silicon membrane,”explains Manfred. “It is heat resisting upto 220ºC, which means it is capable ofbending timber components quite easily,as well as doors and other components.”

The top level machines made byColumbus are typically anything up toeight metres in length with a bed widthof two metres, “But we are currentlymaking a machine which is fifteenmetres long which offers cycle times ofbetween two and twenty minutes, depending on the glue.”

Columbus also makes vacuum bags ofup to 3800 x 1200mm capable offorming almost 360º around com-ponents. “With a silicone vacuum bag andone of our 80m3 pumps , it’s possible tomake 600 items a day. We have anothersolution which is a seamless volumemembrane which is ideal for a 3880 x1540 table with a height of 600mm.”

Fundermax were on show atEcobuild in March for the 3rd yearthis year - and on the stand were a

number of solutions for both furnitureand wall panels.

FunderMax Compact Interior panelsare high-pressure laminate panels(HPL) manufactured to standard EN438. Produced in laminate pressesunder high pressure at hightemperature, they are particularlysuitable for demanding applications, such as office furniture, wall cladding, cubicles and sanitary facilities and arange of decorative applications.

There are three variants: MaxCompact Interior panels, MaxAlucompact and Max Compact withWhite Core. Max Compact Interiorpanels come with décors on both sides. The core is black and the surfaces areavailable in different structures.

The design of Max Alucompact (42,06) is the same as the Max CompactInterior panel but Alucompact, as thename implies, has aluminium bandson both sides under the decorativelayers or in the core. This ensures thateven perforated panels are extremelystable. Furthermore, this panel typecan be used as wall cladding withoutrear ventilation. In furniture app-lications, the edges stand out asmodern design elements.

Though similar in form andfunction, Max Compact with WhiteCore is stylistically different: the panelcore remains a pure white. Colourvariations are possible, such as a blackcore. Fundermax advises clients tocompare the samples when using morethan one panel type. The décor isalways the same on both sides.

More than eight million squaremetres of veneers, fourhundred cubic metres of

popular wood species and onehundred and forty species of timbermake Karlsruhe-based Schorn & Grohone of the leading lights in the veneerindustry. But, even though thecompany’s Ehrenkirchen branch driesits own lumber and adds a furtherthousand cubic metres of sixty or morespecies to the Schorn & Groh offer, there’s much more to Schorn & Grohthan wide range and huge stock. Thecompany is well-known for presentingits clients with rare and finely figuredgems, such as FSC-certified and PEFC-certified fiddle-back flitches, figuredveneers and other rareties.

Seekers of the unusual have cometo appreciate Schorn & Groh’s excl-usive One-of-a-Kind collection. Theoutstanding veneer originals featureattractive grains, extravagant, eye-catching figuring and, in many cases, come with provenance and history: FireRoots, for example, is a Vavona burrflitch, fashioned from a 500-year-oldtree root from California which bearsthe traces of several forest fires. As withall veneers from Shorn & Groh’sexclusive collection, this magnificentveneer can be acquired in its entirety.

Over its fifty-plus year history,Schorn & Groh has shown itself to bean innovator, right at the cuttingedge of veneer technology. Amongthe company’s innovations is ButtCut, a razor-thin veneer, cut fromend grain wood. First seen in 2012,Butt Cut has developed into acollection of eight spectacular designvariations, all available in practicalsheets. Fleece on the rear of thecross-cut spliced veneer providesstability and simplifies processing.

Ethical sourcing is essential, especially sourcing of the more rareand beautiful veneers and timbersSchorn & Groh offers. The companypolicy is to support sustainable forestryand buy only in growing regions andfrom partners who practise regulatedlogging and re-planting. Much of thecompany’s stock is sourced fromEurope and North America which agood portion from plantations.

Time is money, so for kitchenprofessionals who want to reducelabour costs and combine quality

that allows kitchen makers andretailers to offer their customersquality results quickly and easily.

By applying Uniclic® to the ClicBoxrange, assembly has been radicallysimplified and that means significanttime savings. The special tongue andgroove system allows panels to belocked together without the use ofscrews or tools. Both the panels - laminatedchipboard - and the finishes aredesigned in-house by Unilin in order toguarantee that each and every cabinetmeets strict quality standards. A smartdrilling pattern ensures that cabinetsoffer plenty of options (four drawers, five drawers, drawer line, etc), withoutthe need for extra holes to be drilled. In

addition, the drilling pattern is designedto match the most common types ofmount (Blum, Indaux and Hettich).Cabinets are hung on the wall with theaid of an invisible metal clip that - oncemore without the use of tools - clicksinto the back of the unit and can bepositioned at different heights.

If castors are what you need, a trip tothe Guy-Raymond stand at Interzumis sure to be worthwhile.

Founded in 1948, Guy-Raymond hasbeen exhibiting at Interzum since 1989 -and since then, the company's exportbusiness has increased from 10% to60% of its turnover. It’s all part of along-term strategy to expand thecustomer base. Aside from the UK, Guy-Raymond currently trades with 40countries: the bulk with Europe, butsubstantial sales are with North Americaand Australasia. This success has beenbuilt on the belief that you can't beatlocal knowledge, so the company has anetwork of overseas agents anddistributors, backed up by anexperienced multilingual export team.

A significant strength is the level ofvertical integration at Guy-Raymond.All major processes are carried out in-house at its modern 6,000-squaremetre factory in King's Lynn, wherecompliance with ISO 9001 and 14001ensure quality is strictly maintainedwhilst minimising environmentalimpact. This degree of integration

means that delivery lead times can besignificantly shorter than those ofcompetitors, and that flexibility intailoring product to specific customerrequirements is greatly enhanced.

An important factor in the success ofGuy-Raymond’s export growth has beenthe success of the GRX castor range,75% of which is sold outside the UK.Designed, developed and tooled withinthe company, this product range hasseen rapid take-up worldwide where itscontemporary design and strongtechnical performance are widelyappreciated. Having recognised thediverse applications of these products, the company offers a wide range ofbespoke colours and fixing options.

In recent years the GRX range hasbeen greatly extended with the additionof metallic finishes, anti-static productsand, most recently, anti-microbialcastors, which are of particular interestto the medical industry.

For Interzum 2013 Guy-Raymondhas relocated to Hall 5.2 stand F31where visitors will be able to discoverthe latest product innovations.

New ideas, newtrends, new décors -

but a familiar welcome from the

Schattdecor team atthis year’s Interzum.

Faint cracks and a multitude of lively details give BonifacioOak its distinctive character. The planking is subtle in effect.Crossfires, small knots and narrow side-cut narrow crotchfigures are further features.

Loft is a fair-faced concrete décor in a somewhat structuredlayout featuring many of the details typical of the material.

Created for various applications, it is suitable for worktops, wallsurfaces and furniture elements alike.

Sibiu Larch has been given awire-brushed look for a

striking three-dimensional effect. Alternating sections of

densely-packed and wide-spaced grain, various knotsand side-cut crotch figuresgive the planked layout a

lively and rustic touch.

Rustic oak table-boards provided the inspiration for

Beaufort Oak. The lively grainin the broad planking and the

large and small knots all contribute to an extremely

natural look.

Tokaj Lime is a fine-graineddécor offering elongated flame

figures, partial rays and attractive colour treatment.Darker streaks introduce a

touch of interest in the balanced composition.

Thanks to its arresting 3Dlook, Sheffield Oak makes apowerful visual impact, withstriking negative pores in the

growth lines and narrowfigures further contributing to

this effect. The décor isparticularly attractive in dark

colourations.

Hettich's ArciTech drawer systemwas first previewed at Interzumin 2011. Firmly targeted at the

premium segment, it is arguably thebest drawer system ever made andcaused quite a stir. It is now availablein the UK.

ArciTech has been developed togive kitchen and furnituremanufacturers the ability to createperfect drawers for different segmentsand every consumer need. Theluxurious action of the Actro runneroffers superb running smoothness, stability and soft-closure. The uniqueprism concept provides a profilegeometry which ensures exceptionallateral stability. Synchronised controlguarantees a co-ordinated runneraction and the perfectly-balancedSilent System for soft-closure gentlyshuts drawers while giving themmaximum loading capacity.

ArciTech features in Vertex, theground-breaking new modular kitchenfrom Nottingham kitchen studioMascari. Vertex is designed to stream-line the specification process whiledelivering a finished product of superbquality and ergonomics. Vertex features

a multifunctional wall unit whichincludes various appliance and storageoptions which are concealed when notin use. Meanwhile, the other keyelement of Vertex, the island unit, isdevoted to food preparation, cookingand waste separation.

Hettich ArciTech was a naturalchoice for Vertex, as it optimisesstorage while being a pleasure to use.It is also aesthetically in keeping withthis very design-oriented concept.Vertex also uses two other Hettichproducts, the soft-close Sensys hingeand the InLine P sliding door system.

Hettich UK marketing manager ColinPatterson says: “It is appropriate thatHettich, the pioneer of the soft-closedrawer, should take the whole drawersystem concept to a new level. Now thatconsumers have come to expect theirdrawers to slide back in place gently

with barely a murmur, the time is rightto exceed their expectations once more.Vertex is just the sort of concept tobenefit from ArciTech and we aredelighted to be working with such asinnovative studio as Mascari.”

At Interzum, Hettich will display itsfull range of furniture fittings. Theexhibition will also be the launchpadfor new ranges of Hettich's ProDecorhandles and a new sliding/foldingdoors catalogue. Is it possible to apply a contour edge-banding by hand and get a good glue lineand a strong bond?

“It is not possible to control glue tempera-ture at the point when the band is appliedto the panel and edge pressure withmanual machines. The edge force requiredis more than a manual operator can applyconsistently. Automated machines are theonly real solution.”

With stiffer banding materials, such as2mm and 3mm, the edgebanding has a

natural memory which will not conform tothe shape of the panel. How can manufac-turers avoid loose glue joints on smallradius corners?

“The only way is to control the speed andpressure of the application system at cor-ners to ensure that the glue joint is allowedto flash off while still under pressure. Thismeans specific speeds on corners. It is alsoimportant that the glue unit should beclose to the application point to preventthe glue cooling too much before the bandis applied to the panel. Good automated

systems automatically do this but manualand semi-automatic machines are as yetunable to provide this control, significantlylimiting the complexity of shapes whichcan be performed.”

The butt join is a very precise operationrequiring accurate measurement, trim-ming and laying of the band but oftenbutt joints turn out loose. How is it pos-sible to avoid this problem?

“A good operator can achieve acceptablebutt joins manually but this requiresconsiderable time - often as much as fiveto ten minutes depending on the operator-and it is difficult in production tomaintain this quality. Good quality auto-matic machines are able to perform thebutt join in 10 seconds and the qualityperfect with tolerance of 0-0.3mm.”

How does one avoid the problem ofunsmooth glue application and ensurereliably tight glue line on tight corners?

“The gluing system is the heart of anyedgebander but even the best glue systemwill perform poorly if inferior glue is used. The best solution is to use the best qualityglue available. The small extra cost of abetter glue is recovered many times insaved rework, better quality glue line, lowermachine maintenance, on-site replacementof faulty components and more.”

What advice wold you give to manufac-turers who have not compromised on gluequality but are still experiencing problemswith adhesion on complex shapes?

“The ideal glue system does not leavethe glue heating for extended periodsexposed to the atmosphere where theglue components will evaporate off anddiscolour. When glue components

evaporate off (noticeable by a glue smellin the atmosphere), the glue bond iscompromised and the glue line willdeteriorate and be more challenging oncomplex shapes. In the worst instance, the banding can fall off.”

Is it possible to make reliably edgedcurved components on an edgebanderwhere the glue unit is some distance awayfrom the first pressure roller?

“The ideal glue system would have theglue unit as close as possible to the firstpressure roller so as to minimise anycooling of the glue before it is applied tothe panel. If this distance is too long, special long open-time glues are requiredto maintain the glue before it is applied. The disadvantage of such glues is thatthere is a longer time for the glue to setonce it is on the panel and, conse-quently, on tight corners the band willtend to pop at the transition points.”

For manufacturers wanting to automatethe process of applying edgebands tocurved components, what’s the return oninvestment likely to be?

“Manual and semiautomatic machinesare inexpensive, typically £10,000-£35,000. However, output is slow andquality variable. Fully automated CNC-machines are expensive and the compo-nent output means typically these can bejustified when component value is veryhigh so long cycle times are reflected inthe value of the finished component.Fully automatic non-CNC Vectormachines use a unique process whichenables justification on a ROI basis onmuch lower component cost. They caneven be equipped with lifting systems, such as vacuum lifters, to cope with largeworksurfaces.”

Gapping remains a problem with manualand semi-automatic machines.

A good glue line and a strong bond.

Butt joins that take 5-10 minutes using manualmethods take 10 seconds with an automatedsystem and have tolerances of 0-0.3mm.

Vector Revolution 180

The Vector Revolution 180 is the ideal solution for contouredgebanding. The patented Vector operating system usesthe panel shape to calculate its path and, hence, requires noprogramming. This unique system means that the VectorRevolution 180 can be used in Nested Based Manufacturingsetups - ideal for material recovery when processing shapedpanels. The Sidewinder trimmer unit and glue joint scrapermean all processes are completed simultaneously leading to

exceptionally short cycle times - typically 1-2 minutes perpanel. It is ideal for high production with short runs of eachshape. Designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, theVector control screen shows the operating manual in videoformat with a simple, icon-based index system used to findshort video clips quickly to help the operator. 2013 is predicted to be anotheryear of massive growth at theFelder Group. Despite stagnation

in the economy over the past fewyears, with investment in the factory, new production techniques, productsand machines, Felder has continued togo from strength to strength.

At the annual January New Year'sMeeting, Mr Hansjörg Felder announcedthe start of a wave of new products thatwere to be launched in 2013. The firstrelease of products included the newlydesigned range of 900 series andFormat-4 planer thicknessers.

In autumn 2012, the new FelderD963 was presented, with 630mmthicknessing width and a wealth of highquality standard specifications includingpower drive adjustment. Then inJanuary this was followed up with thelaunch of the new A951, AD951, Dual

51 and Plan 51. A simplified design forthe lifting of the planing tables and amore solid machine chassis are just twoof the immediately noticeableimprovements. Numerous changes havebeen made to the machines and, saysthe Felder Group, this is only the start.

At Ligna in Hannover this year, theFelder Group will be launching anunprecedented number of newmachines. These will range frommachines for the hobbyist through toCNC machining technology. With over1300m2 of exhibition space, this year’sevent will present the largest stand everand Felder looks forward to welcomingyou there. You must see a lot of warehouses thatsimply don't work as efficiently asthey could. What are the most

common issues you come across?

“Under-utilisation of available space - andforklifts - are common. Many companiesstill use one type of forklift outside, another inside, and possibly even anotherfor moving specific products. Using aCombilift for handling long materialimproves utilisation across the board, andsaves on capital investment, maintenance, insurance and training costs. Optimisingthe layout of storage areas can result inmuch more efficient operations. In somesituations we have found, for example, that personnel picking and handlinggoods only spend about 20% of their dailyhours on this activity whilst more than50% of their time is spent driving aroundthe warehouse to locate stock.”

Combilift is well known for its forklifttrucks but possibly less well known forthe facilities it offers clients who havespace issues they want to address. Whatcan your designers offer and what canCombilift deliver besides trucks?

“Since we established Combilift it hasbeen our byword that, rather than justsupplying forklifts, we see ourselves asproviders of complete warehouse solutionsand our layout service has been a keyelement of this. The combination of thefour-way design of Combilift's trucks, theirability to travel sideways with long loadsand negotiate tight confines, plus aradical rethink of stacking and storingmethods can exploit the full potential ofavailable space. This can avoid costly anddisruptive relocation should the volume ofgoods increase. Our highly qualified teamof design engineers prepare layout plans

which can yield substantial space savingsin excess of 30% when handlingpalletised goods with our Aisle-Masterarticulated trucks and up to 100% whenhandling long loads with the Combiliftsrange. The appearance of the finishedlayout is very clear and concise and cantherefore instantly convey the level of im-provement that can be achieved.”

When you set about designing an efficientwarehouse, or redesigning a warehouse toimprove its efficiency, where do you startand what are the steps in the process?

“Whatever size of company we areadvising, from small family operations tolarge global concerns, provision of datais crucial as the first step. As well asdetailed information on the size of loadshandled - length, width, weight, etc, - weneed dimensions of the area that is to beused for storage, the upper and lowerroof/eave height, the location of entranceand exit points and loading bays, plusinformation on any outside areas thatmay also be used. We also make use oftechnology such as Google maps, whichis a great way of clarifying the informa-tion we have been given (sometimes it isnot 100% correct!). Using our designsoftware and 3D simulations, thedesigners then create diagrams of layoutwhich provide the best possible storagedensity and the best type of Combilifttrucks for the products handled.”

What proportion of Combilift's ware-house design work is new build, or atleast empty warehouses, and what pro-portion is working with clients who havewarehouses that they want to be moreefficient?

“We do more work with clients who haveexisting premises that they want tooptimise. This is partly down to the factthat a lot of companies we work withhave been in business for a while andhave long established premises. The greatadvantage of our service for them is that,by utilising existing facilities, it enablesincreased capacity without the significantextra costs involved in building, buying orrenting extra space. It can also avoidcomplicated planning consent issues.”

In the course of a reorganisation, doesCombilift supply racking, etc, and projectmanage?

“We do not actually supply racking butwe have close working relationships witha number of racking suppliers and ourexperienced gathered over the years canbe invaluable to them, too. Due to ourstaff's expertise we can advise as to the

best type of racking for any particularpurpose - such as cantilever racking forlong loads of timber, high bay narrowaisle racking for pallets, etc. If the cus-tomer has a preferred racking supplier, wewill work with them and make sure thatthe interface between racking and truckshas the best possible outcome. Forexample, when we supplied six new trucksto James Latham's new depot in Leeds wecollaborated with Latham's racking sup-plier, Stakapal, for the guided aisle sectionof the warehouse.”

What steps does the Combilift team taketo minimise disruption to working ware-houses that might need more substantialreorganisation?

“Implementing a new build project isobviously less disruptive than reorgan-ising an existing warehouse, whichrequires close collaboration between allparties to minimise any down time. Some customers schedule a total refit totake place when their operations aretypically slower, or during holidayperiods. To minimise any potentialdisruption Combilift will generally makeavailable a used or demo Combilift fortraining in advance of the delivery of thenew unit to give the customer some timeto get their operators trained up beforethey start the reorganisation.”

Is it possible for customers to avail them-selves of the design service withoutbuying a Combilift truck?

“Yes. Our warehouse design and logisticaudit service is free of charge and comeswith no obligation to purchase our trucks. However, in practice we have found thatonce potential customers have gonedown the route of looking to us foradvice, they are usually so impressed withthe outcome that they buy our products.”

What does Combilift offer that itscompetitors don't?

“As we have been offering this servicefrom day one, we have 15 years of expe-rience in this field that is unmatched bycompetitors. We employ a team of six fulltime engineers at the factory whose solerole is to work on this, which gives you anidea of the scope of this section of ourbusiness and the demand for it aroundthe world. We are one of just a very fewcompanies offering a fully free of chargeservice - others will offer basic advice andthen expect a consultant to step in toprovide more details - which naturallycomes at a price.”

AXYZ ON THE STAGECardiff Theatrical Services is a familiar company to the Welsh National Opera, forwhom it has built scenery as a subsidiary company for the past 30 years. Usingpredominantly wood, the company has expanded to provide a full scenery buildingfacility for other clients such as the Royal Opera House, the BBC and some ofLondon’s top West End shows. The scenery components include everything fromformers for boxes to complex shapes that are fixed to timber or steel frames.

Central to this expansion has been the purchase of an AXYZ 4010 router, which “ticked all the boxes in our must-have machining capabilities” according toDarren Joyce, General Manager at Cardiff Theatrical Services. He added that “it gaveus the right level of production but at a comfortable price point. The large 10 x 5ftproduction bed and 7-station Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facililty provides manyoptions in terms of what materials we can machine and what components we canmanufacture using the router and the Delcam ArtCAM Insignia software running it.”

The AXYZ 4010 is part of the AXYZ 4000 router series, with a choice of bothstandard and bespoke formats, which feature a number of standard and optionalproduction tool enhancements. Features like a much-enlarged multi-station ATCfacility and AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for optimum material alignment and moreprecise cutting are coupled with the next-generation AXYZ A2MC machinecontroller and the new Smart Console incorporating context-sensitive menus forease of operation. There is also extended Z-axis height, multiple spindle options(including quick-release tooling) and the processing length of the routers can beconfigured to enable different production requirements.01902 375600www.axyz.co.ukFor information about Cardiff Theatrical Servicesvisit www.cardifftheatricalservices.co.uk or call 029 2063 4680.

GOOD FOR THE PLANET, GOOD FOR THE POCKETFor more than a decade, Dustraction Ltd has been the waste extraction supplier of choice for SAMMouldings in Ulster, Europe’s leading manufacturer of architectural mouldings in MDF.

For the latest installation on the 8-acre Antrim site, Dustraction upgraded and moved an older80m3 storage silo to enable the flow of MDF waste to be switched between silo stores. At the outlet ofcyclo filters 3 and 4, a new 2-way diverter ensures a reliable feed source for the Combined Heat andPower plant.

Dustraction has continually upgraded the waste extraction, storage and delivery mechanismsneeded to get the wood waste fuel to the electricity generating turbine via an MDF chippings and dustincinerator. An additional cyclo filter has been installed to exhaust waste from a repositioned hoggervia an external network of ducting.

An interest-free Energy Efficiency loan from the Carbon Trust has partially funded by the layout, designed to feed a biomass wood chip and dust boiler with a heat exchanger and steam turbine.

Production Director Mark Kirkpatrick estimates his extraction technology, utilising the 2.5 tons ofMDF waste generated per hour, is saving on heating and paint drying processes by around £72,000per annum, with a further £180,000 in waste disposal costs annually. He adds that by avoiding the useof fossil fuels, he is saving about 1,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide each and every year as well.0116 271 3212www.dustraction.co.uk
