STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and
Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Trust Your Tradesman! Part 2 of this series looks at Washing machine repairmen
The large puddle on the floor was not - for once - caused by our new puppy. Our washing machine had suffered from health problems for a while; its spin cycle was decidedly lack-lustre and it had a tendency to drip. I had studiously ignored the problem and now it was repaying me by making a weird sound whilst haemorrhaging water in an alarming fashion.
Once we’d emptied it and mopped up, my husband and I discussed our options.
A brief phone call to the manufacturer elicited that they’d struggle to get someone out to us this week, or even next week. How were we fixed for August? I jest but there was an incredibly long lead time. Also there would be a £60 call out fee to diagnose the problem, then parts and labour would be charged on top. We reckoned that would bring the bill to at least £160, possibly more.
With the cost of a decent new machine
starting at £200 was it really worth it?
I consulted Neil, a local repairman. He said he would come out the next day to have a look at the machine and give me an honest opinion but it would cost £20. That seemed more reasonable.
He duly arrived and discovered that...ahem...it was a faulty door seal coupled with a motor problem (common with our particular make apparently) and something to do with carbon brushes, whatever they are.
Anyway, within a week he’d fixed it. The whole thing came in under £100 and my washing machine should be good for another few years. RESULT.
So, when I came to write this article I called him up again and asked for some hints and tips about washing machines and the men who fix them.
Top Tips for Using a Washing Machine Repairman
Beware free estimates. Costs may be hidden in the price of the repair, or a repair may be deemed necessary to justify the call out. £15-£20 is not unreasonable to cover expenses.
Don’t let someone take your machine away. It will be more expensive and is rarely necessary.
Don’t turn a blind eye to small problems like minor leaks and rattles. As I found out, small problems are generally easier and cheaper to fix, and if ignored can eventually become big, scary, expensive problems.
As the cost of professional repairs creeps closer to the cost of a new machine, more people are undertaking DIY repairs. Be careful. Water and electricity are a potent combination. A good repairman will tell you if your machine is worth repairing or if you’d be better off buying a new one.

Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Derbyshire, The Peak District, a beautiful area with sweeping moors, I was there until about 9 years old when my parents moved us to Herefordshire. They wanted to own a pub so a 400 year old coaching inn was our new home near Ross on Wye. I lived in Here-fordshire for a big chunk of my formative years before moving to Gloucestershire which I feel is my spiritual home!
When I first came to Stroud it reminded me of the Peak District with its mill heritage and the different commons that reminded me of the moors in Derbyshire, I have heard Stroud described as a northern mill town in the Cotswolds! I love the mix of the industrial heritage and the natural beauty of the five valleys, I also find the mix of creative people in the area such an inspiration for my own creativity. I was told that there are more crafts people, artists and artisans per square mile here than any-where in the country, I’m not sure how true that is but I have met LOTS of like-minded creative people since moving here.
What did you do after you left school? During my teen years I ran a small business as a garden help for peo-ple in our village at evenings and weekends, at one point I helped looked after 6 gardens and worked at a small family nursery on Satur-days, I'm not sure how I found time for school! I grew up surrounded by creativity, my mother was an incredibly creative person, she was trained in floristry, horticulture, she was an amazing interior designer and was also a hairdresser and beauty therapist....all of these jobs were at different times! I eventually followed her (and my sister!) into the hair-dressing business and have never looked back! I had an old fashioned hairdressing apprenticeship with a hairdresser who spent most of his professional life styling hair in Knightsbridge London, I learned great skills that are often not taught these days.

21Any interests and hobbies? Although I never went into horticulture as a career as I initially ex-pected, I have maintained my love of it and my partner and I spend every spare minute tending our garden in Stroud. We both love gar-dening and at out last home in Gloucester we were thrilled to be awarded 'Best City Garden' in the Gloucester in Blooms Awards. The other love in life is our rescue dog 'Bertie' who we were lucky to find at The Dogs Trust 2 years ago, he's a very energetic Jack Rus-sell so when I'm not in the garden or tending to clients hair needs then I'll be found on Rodborough & Minchinhampton common trying to catch a mad terrier!!
I recently started green wood carving as a hobby, there’s something very therapeutic about carving away at a piece of wood and creating a beautiful object, I also recently took up meditation and mindfulness and the process of wood carving helps you to clear the mind of ‘chatter’ and become more relaxed and at peace.
What of your home life? My partner Darren and I moved to Stroud nearly 4 years ago, he works at Ebley Mill for Stroud District Council and also acts with the drama group ‘The Cotswold Players’ so we have very quickly be-come friends with lots of people in the area. We have found Stroud to be a really welcoming place and feel like we’ve lived here for years!!
Any plans for the future? Running my business in and around Stroud for the last 4 years has been very rewarding, as a mobile hairdresser I get to drive all around the beautiful 5 valleys and meet great people. Last year I was incred-ibly lucky to be invited to awards in London where I won the national award 'Bridal Hair Stylist of the Year'. A big part of my business is bridal work and with a love of sharing knowledge I decided to offer training courses in styling bridal hair. I enrolled in a teacher training course and I have now been running these for the last year, hiring out the Cotswold Playhouse to host one day training courses for styl-ists and make up artists who want to expand into wedding, prom and special occasion styling. I now have people travelling from across the UK to attend these one day courses, I’m looking to expand this to offer more intensive courses held over 2 or 3 days.

We are all familiar with this month’s topic - ‘Stress’. Since the dawn of mankind the state that we now call stress has affected our health and how we cope (or don’t cope) with the day-to-day. But in order to understand stress, it’s important to also look at anxiety, depression, and anger. These are all products of a very primitive brain system, which we still have in existence today.
Our early ancestors faced very real hazards, but our responses are the same today. We are hard-wired to respond to perceived threats regardless of whether the threat is ‘real’. Particularly important to mention here is that stress relates very closely to anxiety. We can create anxiety by negatively forecasting the fu-ture or ruminating about the past. It’s these negative thoughts that contribute to the negative state of feeling stressed. And if we feel stressed, we are stressed!
The stress response is the same now as it was then. When the caveman looked out of the cave and there was snow or ice or danger and he couldn’t go out to hunt, he pulled the rug over his head and avoided interaction. We have adapted this to all the modern day symptoms of depression. If we were in the jungle in those days we wouldn’t have been far away from our panic button at any given time. Anger is merely a primitive way of increasing our strength to defend our-selves against wild animals and other wild tribesman.
If we are anxious then the mind often gets into a state of high alert, vigilantly scanning it’s environment for threats, and not being able to relax. Paradoxical-ly, it’s when we are relaxed that we can come up with a proper and balanced assessment of a situation. When we are relaxed, we are able to operate from our intellectual brain, and this part of the brain is capable of new innovative solutions to problems. It is therefore better able to tackle the task efficiently.
Hypnotherapy can be very effective at helping people to deal with stress. It accounts for it’s causes, without focusing on these. Instead it looks at the alternatives, and helps us to form new habits and quickly cope better on our own.
Why am I Stressed?

Complementary therapies are treatments and alternative or traditional medicines that can be used alongside conventional medicines to help maximise or im-prove your health. Massage:
Massage is a well known complementary therapy. It is used in many countries as a way to de stress and relieve muscle tension. Massage is a popular therapy due to it's use of tailored oils, hands on approach and instant and recognisable results. Reflexology:
Reflexology is an alternative medicine that involves applying pressure to the feet and hands in specific area based on the idea that there are reflexes in the hands and feet that produce an effect on other parts of your body for instance your back. Aromatherapy:
Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils taken from flowers, barks, stems, leaves and oth-er part of plants to create specifically blended and applied either by massage or inhala-tion to aid with both your physical and psychological well-being. Hopi Ear Candles:
The use of Hopi Ear Candles as a complementary therapy has been used for many years as a relaxing way to help with wax build up, headaches, block sinuses and tinnitus. Hopi Ear Candles work through a combination of beeswax, oils and massage to leave you with both a relaxed feeling as well as reduced pressure of the head and ears. Holistic Facial:
The holistic facial not only is a targeted complementary therapy massage but will leave you feeling relaxed and pampered. Done using a combination of oils and creams, holis-tic facials can help improve your mood, detoxify the body, increase facial circulation, reduce acne and brighten your complexion. Holistic facials are beneficial to both young and mature skin. Acupuncture:
A form of alternative medicine, acupuncture has been used for centuries by the Chinese as both a therapeutic and preventative form of medicine. Acupuncture treatment con-sists of fine needles inserted into the body in certain sites depending on what treatment is required, for instance for the treatment of headaches or migraines needles will be placed in the temple or back of the neck. Osteopathy: Osteopathy is a form of alternative medicine that detects, treats and prevents health problems by using such techniques as moving, massaging and stretching your joints and muscles, allowing the body to essentially heal itself rather than using drugs or surgery. Chiropractic: Chiropractic is a form of complementary therapy in which chiropractors use their hands in a wide range of techniques to treat bones, muscles and joints with an emphasis on the spine and lower back treatment. Finding a registered therapist: As you can see, there are a lot of complementary therapies to choose from no matter what you are looking to use them for. Always remember to choose a practitioner who is registered with the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council).

Garden View Last Spring my neighbour admired my display of daffodils.
“Barely any of mine have flowered this year,” she said, “What’s your secret? Your’s look better every year!”
I was stumped. How hard is it to plant a daffodil? Dig a hole somewhere round September time and pop the bulb in pointy end upwards - job done!
Except, when I broke down what’s involved, it’s not actually that simple. To produce a mass of bulbs which flower for a prolonged period year on year requires thought and preparation.
First, choose the right bulbs. Pick the largest, firmest bulbs you can find.
Then plant them in a deep hole at least 8 inches / 20cm and preferably 10 inches / 25 cm deep, in small groups. Most people plant their daffs too near the surface. This means they’re likely to dry out. Dry bulbs lack the food and moisture required to build up reserves for the following year. This results in lots of grassy leaves and not many flowers.
Once the daffodils have flowered leave the foliage untouched for six weeks before shearing it off. This gives enough time for the bulbs to reabsorb nutrients from the leaves.
Unfortunately daffodil foliage is untidy stuff and in a small suburban garden it can be very unsightly. There are two ways around this…
The first is to treat daffodils as annuals and plant them in potting compost in aquatic baskets among the other plants.
Once the flowers have gone the basket may be dug up and the bulbs discarded on the compost heap.
The second way is to plant dwarf varieties. That way you can enjoy the flowers without worrying about the foliage. Time to get planting!
This month - Planting Daffodils
Best Daffodil Varieties Trumpet Daffodils have big trumpets, at least as long as the petals. Arctic Gold is a deeply saturated yellow Beersheba is a stunning white variety Large Cupped have trumpets over a third the length of the petals Border Beauty has a striking orange trumpet and dark centre. Pink Charm is an unusual white variety with a salmon tinged trumpet. Dwarf varieties Nanus Midget is tiny but perfectly formed. February Gold is stunning and for a splash of colour, Jet Fire with it’s orange trumpets takes some beating.

A Peek into the Past On August 24th 1875 Captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel without the use of artificial aids.
Webb was one of twelve children, born in Shropshire to a local doctor.
During his time in the merchant navy he attempted to rescue a man who had fallen overboard. Webb dived into the sea in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately the man was never found but Webb’s daring won him a medal, £100 and the adulation of the British press.
In 1873 Webb read a record of the failed attempt to swim the Channel by J. B. Johnson. Inspired Webb left his job and
began training: first at Lambeth baths, then in the Thames and finally in the Channel itself.
On 12th August 1875 he made his first attempt, but strong winds meant conditions were against him and he abandoned the swim.
On 24th August he started out again from Admiralty Pier at Dover, backed by three chase boats and smeared in porpoise oil.
During the crossing he suffered jellyfish stings and also strong currents which delayed him by five hours. Finally, after 21 hours and 45 minutes he landed near Calais
