EXPOSITORY• It explains something or gives

information• It gives facts or directions• It has a topic sentence• It has transition words• It has a conclusion• Prompt key Word: explain

Expository Example

PERSUASIVE• It’s purpose is to change the way the reader thinks

or feels• It has a specific topic• It tries to influence people• It expresses an opinion• It uses evidence, facts or proof• It uses persuasive language• Prompt key Words: persuade, convince

Persuasive Example

DESCRIPTIVE

• It describes something• It tells how something looks, feels,

sounds, smells, tastes, etc.• It uses a lot of details to paint a picture

in the reader’s mind• Prompt key word: describe

Descriptive Example

POETRY• It looks different than other writing• It speaks to the mind and the heart• It says a lot in a few words• It uses figurative language• It is pleasing to the ear• It uses stanzas
