Extension Program Highlights Hands-OnClinicalTrainingwithTCMandWesternMastersTheFiveBranchesExtensionProgramdirectlyimmersesstudentsatalllevelsoftraininginhands-onclinicalwork.TheAsianBodyworkClinicianlevelofcertificationoffersthehighestlevelofclinicalbodyworktrainingavailable.BothTCMandWesternfacultyhelpstudentsintegratebothEasternandWesternapproachestothebodyintoasuccessfulsystemofbodyworkandQigongforthepromotionofoptimalhealthcare.

IntegrationbetweenTraditionalAsianandWesternMedicalTheoryTheinstructorsintheExtensionProgramareexperiencedinbothtraditionalAsianmedicaltheoryandWesternanatomyandphysiology.Studentshaveauniqueandexceptionalopportunitytolearnhowthesystemsworktogetherasone,andintegratethesesystemsintothedevelopmentoftheirownpersonalstyleoftherapy.Ancientphilosophyandenergymedicinehaveanincreasinglyrecognizedscientificbasis.TheFiveBranches’ExtensionProgramintegratesChineseandWesternanatomyandphysiologyincoursessuchasOrthopedicTuina,InternalOrgansandPointsDescription,andAppliedKinesiologycourses.

DevelopmentofSelf-CareandProfessionalGrowthSkillsFiveBranchesstrivestocreateaplacewhereeveryonecangrow.OurbranchesofAsianBodyworkandQigonghavebeenrootedforthousandsofyearsinChina,Japan,andThailand.Today,thesebranchesextendintoourcommunityandofferacoolingshadetoahecticlife.Ourgoalistohelpstudentscultivateinternalawarenesswithpracticalbodyworkskillsthatfacilitatehealing,growthandtransformation.Wemaintainasupportiveenvironmentwherestudentscanlearntheessentiallifeskillsthathelpfuelvitalenergyandhealth.

DevelopmentofInternalAwarenesswithQigongPracticeTheChineseviewoflifeisbasedontheprinciplesofharmonyandbalance.Chinesemedicineanditstheoryprovidesadeeplookintothehumanbody.ThefundamentalprincipleofthisperspectiveisthenotionofQi,themiraculouslifeenergythatanimatesalllivingthings.ThewayQiflowsthroughenergeticchannelsdefinesthestateofhealthwithinthebody.ThepracticeofQigongplaysanimportantroleinallofourbodyworkprograms.Qigongempowersstudentstopracticeenergeticformsoftherapy.WeencouragestudentstoexplorethecultivationofQiandtoenhancetheirsensitivityofenergyforinternalbalanceandhealing..

HistoryofFiveBranchesUniversityFiveBranchesUniversitywasfoundedonanauspiciousday:February4,1984,onChineseNewYearintheYearoftheMouse,atthebeginningofa60-yearcycle.Wehadoneclassroom,aclinicwiththreetreatmentrooms,fiveteachers,18dedicatedstudents,onepatientaday,andonetypewriter.Todaywehavetwocampuses,14classrooms,38treatmentrooms,200teachers,450dedicatedstudents,1500alumni,andwesee160patientsaday.Wehavegrown.

Fromthebeginning,itwasourintentiontoinviteTraditionalChineseMedicinepractitionerstotheWest,toteachandtransmittheirpreciousknowledgeofChinesemedicineandtosharetheirsubtleyetpowerfulwaysofpracticingmedicine.ThehistoryofFiveBranchesbeganwhenseveraloftheseextraordinaryyethumblepractitionersofTCMacceptedourinvitation.Theessenceofoursuccesshasbeenthequalityanddedicationofourfaculty/practitioners.JeffreyPang,L.Ac.,JoannaZhao,L.Ac.,andLucyHu,L.Ac.,havebeenwithusforover30years.Today,ourfacultynumberover200distinguishedmembers.Themostmeaningfuleventsofourhistory,however,arethememoriesofthehugandwarmsmileapatientgivesoneofourfacultymemberswhentheymeetoutsidetheclinic,thepractitionerwhoshareshowChinesemedicinesavedtheirpatient’slife,andtheheartfeltgratitudeexpressedbyagraduateattheirgraduationforthegiftsreceivedfromfacultyduringtheirtimeofstudyandtrainingatFiveBranches.

Itisourcomprehensiveacademicprograms,thequalityofteachinginboththeclassroomandclinicandthedeepandsincerededicationoffaculty,staffandstudentsthathavecontributedsignificantlytothetransmissionofthisincrediblemedicineintoourcommunitiesandthroughouttheWest.

AcademicandClinicClassSizeTooptimizelearning,academicclassesaverage24students.Classesthathave

StandardsofProfessionalismTheStandardsofProfessionalismpoliciesareintendedtoprotecttherightsofallstudents,faculty,staffandpatientsatFiveBranchesUniversitywhileoncampusandatallsponsoredevents.FiveBranchesUniversitymayimposedisciplineforviolationofthesestandardsofprofessionalismincluding,butnotlimitedtodishonesty,disrespect,disruptingaprofessionalatmosphere,substanceabuse,andsexualharassment.

DressCodeandHygieneStudentsarerequiredtowearawhitebuttonupclinic/spashirtwithsleevesandmustwearitatalltimeswhileattendingcliniccourses.Clinicattireisanexpressionofprofessionalismandhygiene;notafashionstatement.Studentsarealsorequiredtowearanametagwiththecorrectstudentstatusontheirclinic/spashirt.Donotunderanycircumstancesuseaclinic/spashirtbelongingtoanotherstudentorsupervisor.Studentsareresponsibleforwearingclinicandclassroomattirethatisneat,cleanandreadyforclinicalcontactatalltimes.Inappropriateattireincludes:shorts,T-shirts,worn-outdenimjeans,open-toedshoes,dirtyorworn-outtennisshoesanddirtyorwrinkledclothing.

Studentmustmaintainimmaculatelycleanhands,nailsandfreshbreathatalltimes.Handsarerequiredtobecleanandfingernailscleanandtrim.Studentsshouldhavetheirownfingernailbrushavailableattheclinic.

DrapingPoliciesFiveBranchesUniversitymaintainsstrictstandardsofdrapingandmodesty.Noexposureofaperson'sprivategenitalregionwillbepermitted.Womenarerequiredtouseachesttowelatalltimesandtokeepthebreasttissuecovered.Studentsaretaughttodrapewithcare,intention,andregardformodestyandcomfortandtoalwaysrespecttherightsofthepersontheyaretreating,beitaclassmateoraclient.

ReviewProcessReviewofastudent’sacademicprogressisperformedeachterm,includingthereviewofallfinalcourseandclinicgrades,evaluationsbythefaculty,andattendancerosters.AnystudentwhodoesnotmeettheestablishedcriteriafornormalacademicprogressandprofessionalismwillbereferredtotheStudentProgressReviewCommittee.

StudentProgressReviewCommitteeTheStudentProgressReviewCommittee(SPRC)reviewsacademicprogressofstudentstoensuretheirsuccessintheprogram.StudentswhoneedassistancetomaintaingoodacademicstandingarerequiredtomeetwiththeSPRCtodeviseaplantoimprovetheiracademicperformance.StudentsmayasktheSPRCforhelpinfindingtutorsand/orotherresourcestoassistwithsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogram.

DinaWoohaspracticedChineseTraditionalMassageforover36years.ShereceivedmassagetraininginChinaandHongKongandaftermanyyearsofpracticedevelopedstronghandsandgainedextensiveexperienceintreatingheadaches,shoulder,neck,andsciaticpain.Inpracticesince1987,shefindspainfulacupressurepointsandrelievespainthroughspecialtechniquesontheaffectedmeridians.In2002,DinawasinvitedtogiveseverallecturestomassagetherapistsattheAmericanMassageTherapyAssociation(AMTA)inCalifornia.However,shefoundherselfinadequateinspeakingEnglishmassage-relatedvocabulary.ShedecidedtoreturntoschoolandcompletedtwoyearsofstudyattheCityCollegeofSanFrancisco,takingcoursessuchasanatomyandphysiology.In2003,sheenrolledinacupunctureschoolwiththedesiretoenhanceherknowledge.ShereceivedaMasterofScienceinTraditionalChineseMedicinefromtheAcademyofChineseCultureandHealthSciencesinCalifornia(2006),andaDoctorofAcupunctureandOrientalMedicinefromFiveBranchesUniversityin2009.Hergraduatingthesiswas:ChineseAcupunctureandMassageforMigraines.Now,DinaWooisgettingclosetoherretirement,eventhoughsheisstillverystrongandcapable.Shewantstotaketimeofffromherbusyclinicandsharehermanyyearsofexperiencewithotherswhoarewillingtolearn.
